Acebaur
So as we all know GW very nicely gives us each one of the various special weapons that can be part of a combi weapn... and one bolter half to use it with But there is a solution. Despite those bitz being extremely small you can magnetize them so that you can use whatever combi part suits the list without have to buy extra parts or make new models. First up the magnets you'll need. I use Magcraft as their magnets are reasonably priced and excellent quality. Here is the one you'll want for this project http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/Tutorial%20Pics/20150625_231726_zpscxlpcymy.jpg Next you'll need to drill the hole for the magnet in the bolter half. For this I use a 1.778mm drill bit and a pin vice. I'd also advise drilling a pilot hole with a smaller bit first. This is because there is a very small margin for error here and too much to the side and you can blow out the side of the gun. Then glue the magnet in place using whatever cyanoacrylate glue you prefer(I like one that is more of a gel consistency) http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/Tutorial%20Pics/20150625_231037_zpszmfltorg.jpg Notice where I sunk the magnet. While for alignment it is probably easier to do it in the sunken part, there are really thin wall there and I didn't want to risk it. Now you need to align the combi parts. Take a small amount of paint and paint the top of the magnet. Then press the combi part on top of the bolter part and the paint should transfer to the plastic. Then hold the pieces side by side to see where you need to aim your drill (as you won't get a perfect circle from the paint.) I highly recommend drilling a pilot hole here as you can correct small mistakes when you bore it out to the bigger size. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/Tutorial%20Pics/20150625_230912_zpswwjr8gdm.jpg Now you are ready to glue the magnet in place. This is tricky as these magnets like to flip around when you put them in the slots. So, I simply use the bolter half with the magnet attached and put a bead of glue on the top of the magnet and then press the two pieces together. Make sure you test fit it first to make sure you are mounting the magnet's flush. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/Tutorial%20Pics/20150625_231536_zpsl7l93nea.jpg Rinse and repeat for all the combi parts and you are good to build lists with freedom! It's worth mentioning that you might want to make it so that the polarities are always the same on all the future combi's you do, this way you can always swap between them. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/Tutorial%20Pics/20150625_232438_zpsionhlamj.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310096-how-to-magnetize-your-combi-weapons/ Share on other sites
treadhead
Nicely done was toying with doing the same idea the other day but haven't had time to cut plastic for a few days now side note you can do the wrist / forearm (or the gun / hand) as well so the bolter component is swappable too Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310096-how-to-magnetize-your-combi-weapons/#findComment-4103793 Share on other sites
Acebaur
Yup, those size magnets are perfect for wrists too Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310096-how-to-magnetize-your-combi-weapons/#findComment-4103828 Share on other sites
Quixus
Especially for the writs a nice trick is to make one hole deeper than the magnet and one not as deep as the magnet. That way the hand cannot move sideways.
