Which Legion?

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I'm going to take the plunge and grab myself some HH stuff this weekend and was wondering if people had advice as to which legion I should go for.

To save some time, I'll list the ones I am considering. Good guys look away now :) I'm not looking particularly for a competitive force but for a fluffy and fun one to play

1. Alpha Legion - I am in love with these guys and have been ever since I read 'legion' by Mr Abnett. Alpharius is also IMHO one of the better Primarchs. But I am restricted to no allies which is a pain in the butt. Plus transport options needed for everyone expensive in both money and points

2. Word Bearers

I rather like the Lorgar model and I want Malefic Daemonolgy in my 30k life :)

3. Night Lords - SEVATAR!!! This constitutes my entire argument

4. Death Guard/World eaters

Not a serious choice for a full force but I rather like some of their units-I could therefore be convinced otherwise

Any comments would be helpful - I'm looking forward to seeing what people suggest :)

I will chip in for Alpha legion sode of things if youd like.

I love the Alphas fluff wise and while their colour scheme is a bitch it looks good when done well (i will let you know when i manage that. 6 months and counting).

As for rules,

Mutable tactics is ballin as :cuss. Facing grey knights? Adamantium will. mechanised guard or mechanised dark/eldar? Tank hunting bolters. Fighting in a cramped city? Move through cover.

The best one though IMO is infiltrate. Saves on points and gets you right where you need to be. Less points on rhinos and land raiders, more on infiltrating terminators.

Our wargear is abit meh. Banestrike is okay. Power dagger can make powerfist/chainfist characters far more deadly. Venom spheres are great on things like destroyers with rad genades but other than the harness on the termis are again meh.

The rite of war can be restrictive if you dont want to infiltrate but coupled with some interceptor shots can allow you to decimate any army that relies on reserves even in the slightest. I tabled an experienced space wolf and blood angels player in 3 turns due to some interceptor fire and our negative reserve modifier. Rerolls to sieze or plus 1 to going first helps an infiltrating force massively.

And lets not forget we can steal other legions unique units. Hello infiltrating pyroclasts or tank hunting tyrant terminators.

Unit wise its a pretty mixed bag. Lerneans can be good but they are no firedrakes (who are a good steal btw).

Headhunters can mince infantry if used properly. Deployed and supported right nothing short of termis will stand up for long.

Sabotuer is kinda meh after his instant pen explosion tactic was debunked on these very forums. Stike with vigilator.

Characters

Never used exodus outside of math hammer but he seems to be a tough cheap harassment guy who can sit around taking out characters from a distance.

Dynat can be good if you remember he isnt a beat stick. He buffs the army. Getting meltas into your opponents deployment area and adding 1 to the pen table can make even landraiders and super heavies cry.

Autilon skorr is a good cheap delegatus who lets you choose your strategic warlord trait and comes well equiped for his points.

Then the big mac daddy

Alpharius

Preferred enemy everything.... Let that sink in for a moment. Army wide re rolls of 1s to hit and wound. Has some funky deployment shennanigans which can allow him to be infiltrated with a squad of lerneans or such (any dquad really but you gonna put him in a tac squad)

Has some strong abilities like reroll sieze and makes your reserves come in instead of your opponents.

Wargear wise he is well equiped but not ferrus/vulkan/perturabo levels. Pale spear is nice but you can tell he is no primarch hunter. Send him after wraithknights and riptides and nids and watch them evaporate.

All in all the others are better at a certain job. With alpha legion you can tailor and react with a simple rules or stolen unit switch to fight anyone.

I hope to see you join the ranks of the hydra soon brother.

if you are looking at starting small, without going "pride of the legion", the night lords is a nice start. if you take their right of war, terror squads are troops, and can be taken in 5 man squads. Granted you have to take 3, but 15 marines is cheaper than 20.

plus nostraman glaives!

I went alpha, pride of the legion for vet troops, for size and price.

wether any of this is good on the tabletop is up in the air tho!

Option 4.  If you have to ask why, then you're already sold on one of the other options.

Check out WIP threads regarding each legion.  One will swing you there more than the other, same goes for checking legion rule options.  If at the end of the day it's history and fluff or tactics, then pick it based on what you would be happy to have and model and also to play rules wise.

Is this thread in the right place?

Basically just play what you like. I play EC, rules are the gashest in the while hh series, but I loved the models and scheme.

Probably right infyrana, best put in the main page with all the other 'I don't know what legion to pick / which is the best legion to play' threads.

Word Bearers

Fluff - Old grudges, now power hungry, deceit, cults

Rules - Psychic & Daemon units

Alpha Legion

Fluff - Unconventional, subtle, complicated, enigma

Fluff - Some real heroes and some real villains, all stoic, all resilient

Rules - Lots of Heavy Weapons, Terminators and Rad / Shred / Poison

Night Lords

Fluff - Dark, tragic, fall from grace, individualism, fear

Hydra Dominatus!

I'm completely biased, but I'd suggest Alpha Legion. The most flexible force, Alpharius rocks and makes your Astartes better, and if there is a unique unit of another Legion you like you can steal it.

Want to annoy the Emperors Children player in your group? Take some Palatine Blades! Always fancied using the Grave Wardens/Berzerkers, but don't like the rest of the Legion they represent? Now you can!
