Ulrik_Ironfist
So, I'm wanting to test my modelling ability, and I want to use the Forge World thudd gun field artillery battery. I was going to run 2 of them with my Warhawks as my heavy support. I was thinking about getting some gun carriages and wheels from victoria miniatures, and then using some plasticard tubing to make the barrels and mount for the carriage. I was going to make it similar in design to the old German Nebelwerfer. I'd use Cadians as the crew. Do you have any modelling suggestions? Field artillery is really the only fluffy way I can think to include artillery with the warhawks. This would be in addition to veteran mortar teams, as those are really my only source of indirect fire at the moment. CyderPirate
Check out Curious Constructs as well, they've done a load of new artillery pieces with Zinge Industries. There's a couple that would look pretty good as thud guns, too. WarriorFish
Sounds good to me, Victoria's stuff is great and it'll be easy to add some barrels and such so I look forward to seeing what you do :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310371-field-artillery/#findComment-4108320 Share on other sites
Gabryel
That sounds awesome. I had similar thoughts, but I want to build heavy artillery for Army (medusa/Basilisk). The wheels and chassis look very promising. If only I could somehow get a fitting gun to put on top. Ulrik_Ironfist
I had been looking at getting a couple of Nebelwerfers from the bolt action line, but this idea seemed more fun and challenging, as well as cheaper. for the $50 I'd spend on bolt action stuff I could probably make 3-4 homemade, guns. A square 4 barrel is the closest to the thudd gun, and makes the most sense, since the gun is a heavy 4 barrage gun, but a 2x3 6 barrel launcher or a radial 5 barrel (like the nebelwerfer) would also be really cool. I've got some ideas on how to go about it, that will be really simple, so when I finally get to doing it, I'll be sure to do a tutorial on how I did it, so others can follow. SW1
I was looking at making some gun emplacements scratch building some Bas guns. I found some telescoping tubes that are a matching diameter. Guessing the original was made from something similar. Will grab the make and which ones they are. The company do smaller telescopic tubes so may be what your after? Ulrik_Ironfist
No, I'm not trying to build earthshakers. The Nebelwerfer was more like 5-6 breach loading rocket tubes lashed together. I'm envisioning this as much the same only 4 barrels instead. http://img-9gag-fun.9cache.com/photo/aBKjWYA_700b.jpg Most of us may know it as the Screaming Mimi. SW1
Thinner tubes then. Think it'll look rather nifty if you get it right. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310371-field-artillery/#findComment-4109918 Share on other sites
Ulrik_Ironfist
I'm hoping to be able to get the materials in the next month, so I can build several of them. Decent replacement for the wyvern in a Drop list. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310371-field-artillery/#findComment-4109963 Share on other sites
gomericus
just curious how are you planning to represent the height and armour of the wyvern? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310371-field-artillery/#findComment-4110026 Share on other sites
Ulrik_Ironfist
I'm not. I'm using the Forgeworld field artillery battery rules. Which is an immobile piece. I'm playing a drop regiment so I have no tanks. Basically if you cant put it in a Valkyrie, I don't have it (the field artillery can't be put in a transport, but it's the theme I'm worried about. It would be feasible to put a thudd gun in a valkyrie with the crew and drop them off somewhere). I was saying that with the lack of tanks (which the wyvern is) the field artillery battery is the next best alternative for indirect fire, since it's S5 AP5 heavy 4 blast. It's not twin linked but that's why I plan on building 4 of them, two batteries of 2. I, like you, love the design of the nebelwefer. Rules wise I'm not sure if they can compete with the wyveren however it certainly has the rule of cool. Hope to see how this comes out. Ulrik_Ironfist
I'm not saying it can really compete with the Wyvern at all, but since I'm using an Airborne theme and the Wyvern doesn't fit that at all, this is a suitable replacement. Also I'm thinking in terms of the custom Supplement I wrote (which can be found here). I've been thinking to run a drop regiment with some help from a footslogging force. I've been thinking about running a drop regiment after reading band of brothers. I still haven't watched the miniseries yet. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310371-field-artillery/#findComment-4110663 Share on other sites
Ulrik_Ironfist
The mini series was pretty good. I actually had the opportunity to work with TF Currahee for a training rotation, that included supporting Easy Company, it was a pretty cool experience. Feel free to try out the supplement I wrote, if your group will allow it, I'd love to know if other people find it useful, and I'd love feedback to make it better. Vasarian 5th
i like your idea definatly the fluff end of it. had a question as I'm looking into making an earthshaker carriage using a basilisk kit and turning the chimera chassis into a salamander. was wondering in game if it is an immobilised artillery piece can you still rotate it 360 deg for firing or is it stuck where you place it in the direction you place it with only a 45 deg firing option. it is possible I am over thinking this. thanks and look forward to seeing your build Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310371-field-artillery/#findComment-4210104 Share on other sites
librisrouge
I did a highlander tournament about a year ago with a bunch of the zinge industries field artillery in my army. The photos are huge when posted on this forum and none of the shots focused on my own nebelwerfers but here is a link if you want to try to check them out (squinting is recommended.) Ulrik_Ironfist
I haven't had a ton of time and money to do anything with this project. It's still on my list of projects to do, but given how GW just put out some new guard stuff I think the majority of my energies will likely be spent on building up my guard around this new direction. Especially tanks. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310371-field-artillery/#findComment-4237263 Share on other sites
