Battlesmith & Automata

Sorry if this has already been discussed.

The rules for Battlesmith state "If a Battlesmith is in base contact...during the shooting phase...that also possess a cortex controller, may...restore a single lost wound to a battle automata.

The rules for Independent Characters states "Independent Characters...cannot join units that contain Monstrous Creatures...If an Independent Character does not intend to (or cannot) join a unit, it must remain more than 2" away from it at the end of the Movement Phase."

I am crazy or does this mean that it is physically impossible to activate this ability with all units of automata?

Hi,

Yeah, I see. But the rules for ICs specifically states that if an IC can't join a unit it can't end its movement within 2" of said unit. The repair requires base contact and would take place in the following phase, which surely represents a rules clash here.

Here's the response from Forge World. This is obviously an issue.

Hi Craig.

Thanks for your e-mail, you've brought to our attention a very interesting point which we have passed on to our rules team and hopefully an answer will be forthcoming in a future faq/errata.

In the meantime, we can't really offer a way to alter the rule but the only way we can think of to mitigate this is to take an Magos Dominus as part of an Allied Contingent to fulfill the healer role. The reason we suggest this is that a Magos Dominus has the Battlesmith rule but is also not an Independent Character and so may be placed in base contact with a Monstrous Creature. Granted this means that you have less use for your Forge Lord but maybe you can find other areas for him to excel at.

Yes, but the Automata can end their movement within 2" of the IC. ;)

See, even that doesn't work. The wording is:

"...it must (where possible) remain more than 2" away from it at the end of the Movement phase."

If it said "it must end its movement" then sure, but it prescribes a distance away measured at the end of the phase. confused.gif
