Rasclomalum
Happen to have a Manufactorum and a Shrine of the Aquila unbuilt. Figure it would be best if I gave them bases. Not just for the added cover save I've seen been argued for, but for making the damn model itself more resilient. Now, what materials etc would you recommend I use? Lord Commander Scrymgeour
I use foam core. It's easy to cut, doesn't bend and is cheap. It also looks good and doesn't result in a step. Also what do you mean extra cover save? Ruins is ruins right? Gurth
Hardboard or thin MDF work well, corrugated cardboard also does the job but less well. If you go for cardboard, I suggest finding a strong box with a double layer of corrugations instead of just one, as this will prevent warping, and to use filler to close the edges — having the corrugations on display just looks bad. You can cut cardboard with a hobby knife, hardboard with a carpet knife or a saw (I’d recommend the latter), and MDF requires a saw. Rasclomalum
Also what do you mean extra cover save? Ruins is ruins right? Not entirely sure myself, I think I saw the argument made somewhere that if a ruin had a base, you got +1 cover save. Possibly wrong. Anyhow, can I use the plastic glue with an MDF base or do I need something else, like superglue? NovemberIX
You would need super glue (or epoxy) to secure to the MDF. Personally I like to use Canvas Boards as building bases, nice even angles, and already somewhat textured. Lysere
You don't get a bonus to the cover save, what you do get is a larger area that has cover since ruins are area terrain. MagicMan
You can use PVA glue too. It just takes a while to set, so be patient. Superglue is probs best for stuff that will fall apart while drying. Then PVA after for a secure bond. Heres some Shacks i made, glued to thin MDF. Work pretty well. edit : A hot glue gun might be a smart buy if you're making a lot of terrain. They're really cheap nowadays, and pretty useful. Peredyne
I use plasticard for my basing. Doesn't warp on exposure to moisture, I can use regular testor's glue to attach plastic to plastic and superglue for other things and white glue for attaching texture. Rasclomalum
I found some thin MDF and made rectangular bases for my buildings with it (turns out I had a Basilica Administratum too!). Used super glue. Will likely spray coat it all in some shade of gray, paint details in gold and metal and whatever, paint the base to match the gaming table, call it a day. Thanks guys! EDIT: That ork prison is awesome MagicMan!! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310509-how-do-you-base-buildings/#findComment-4111044 Share on other sites
abadizzle
I have found that particle board clip boards work a treat. You can usually find em for about $1 each- they're roughly the same thickness as a GW round base and cut very easily w an electric sabre saw. stinkenheim
I used done old hardboard I had lying around and textured plasticard on it to 'mark out' exactly where the footings of the buildings were. Looks decent and stops arguing about someone touching an edge and claiming a save.
