xxoblivionxx33
So I'm about to make the plunge and im torn between two legions. Any input on pros and cons to help would be appreciated. Charlo
Do you like Daemons? Or do you like the coolest weapon in the game (chain glaives :P)? Red or blue? Lorgar or Konrad? I'd give thier tactics page a read on 1D4chan for a nice overview of them both, from what I remember NL are a little better IMO, but WB can run a lot of psykers if that's your thing. Are you going to be doing them as traitor or loyalist too? HH isn't exactly cheap though. I am wanting input on people thoughts about them and what people who play them like and dislike so i can tip the scales in one direction. Slips
We cant make you choose something you dont want. In the end, you still have to make your own decision regardless of what we tell you ESPECIALLY because its so expensive. Don't want to spend $$$$ on something you're half-hearted about. I want to do both, my issue is that i don't know which of the two to do. I've read the books, the ROWs, Im looking for peoples first hand experience to make an informed decision. Zujara
I can't speak for Night Lords as no one in my group plays them, but some of the reasons I find Word Bearers fun: Dark Channeling table can add some nice bonuses to your units, Daemons bring something different into the game and are cheaper to buy, and my opponents seem to love the opportunity to kill Erebus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310713-sell-me-on-nl-or-wb/#findComment-4114853 Share on other sites

How fluffy does it actually play out ? I don't use the ROW too often as Erebus lets me take Daemons as allies, but I have had some fun using it and allying in Karanak to make the instant death on perils a bit more frightening. The Arch Traitors effect is nice if you play against Loyalists more often, Signs & Portents always seems to work against me due to bad luck. Sabadin
As a big "choose me" for NL,when using their ROW you get compulsory troop choices with Martian death rays, what more really needs said? SkimaskMohawk
NL: you can be a legion full of scum, rapists, murderers and liars. Brotherhood is a word only used to manipulate. The truly naive think that deterrence through fear is the method that brings the best results, ignoring that they simply sow terror and prey on the weak because they are strong. WB: you can collect an army of religious zealots who brought down humanity. They are also a fan of torturing, however it is to appease their gods rather than any personal satisfaction. That being said, some in the legion are extremely enthusiastic in their new role, compared to those that do it because it is the truth; gods exist Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310713-sell-me-on-nl-or-wb/#findComment-4114940 Share on other sites
DuskRaider
Both are characterful. Both have good units, their respective RoW can make for great Armies on the table. Here's the real question: do you want Chaos Daemons? If yes, go Word Bearers. A lot of their units have the Daemon rule, Ghal Vorbak and Mara Ghal are both awesome looking and have nasty rules. You have HQ who are considered Daemons rules wise. Word Bearers have more opportunities color scheme wise, with grey and the Crimson Sun (later entire Legion) red and black. You can do variations of them (NY favorite is grey with red trim), you can mix them (grey for rank and file, red and black for elites and a mixture in between). Personally, I absolutely hate Erebus and Kor Phaeron. ADB helped me appreciate Lorgar, but I still see him as weak. Night Lords are my personal favorite of the two. Their scheme is brooding, you can mess around a bit with their trim in different metallics, add some black to different pieces of armour perhaps, and the Lightning is optional. I love their Terror Attack RoW. The idea of these Terror Squads coming down in Dread Claws, armed with Volkite Chargers, just making a mess of the enemy is appealing. You've got a great HQ in Sevatar (though I think his model is messy), you can hand out Chainglaives like they're going out of style, and you have cool modeling opportunities with them. The downside is obviously the cost of said Terror Squads in Dread Claws. In the end, it's ultimately your choice. Charlo
For future reference, the next HH book is said to have rules for using combined legions in forces (beyond a simple allied detachment). You could potentially have your cake and eat it too :) Raptors and Ashen circle working together is a wonderful image >:B Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310713-sell-me-on-nl-or-wb/#findComment-4115221 Share on other sites
Ishagu
Imo Word Bearers are exceptional on the tabletop, and the models are spectacular.. That being said, Sevatar is a brilliant sculpt and I think the NL are a really fluffy Legion with some brutal capabilities. They are so different, it's a tough choice! xxoblivionxx33
Other then the ability to have daemons as allies, and the 3d6 morale; what makes the bearers excel gameplay wise? Kilofix
NL has some excellent direct combat squads with their Volkite Terror Squads and Chain Glaive Raptors. WB have Units like the Mal Dread and Daemons that just plain play differently. 1ncarnadine
Keep in mind, I think xxoblivionxx33 is playing at the 1000 points range without special characters for a while. This changes things up a bit. IMO the Word Bearers do best with access to their special characters and larger armies where you can coordinate around a theme, like heavy deep striking with a kitted out Gal Vorbak unit or Zardu Layak's Dark Channeled Ashen Circle troops. You get access to more high point investment Daemon ally tricks too. I don't know if the WB will shine at 1k points but consider them for the long-term. Night Lords on the other hand can wreak havoc with some characterful Terror Assault at 1k with something like 3 infiltrating 7-man volkite terror squads and get away with only having one heavy support slot pretty easily. I don't have personal experience with this but I've heard as you go up in points units like Night Raptors start to struggle more and you might start to really feel the limitations of running only one HS slot with the RoW. Not that you have to keep using the same RoW though, or that you can't find ways to work around that Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310713-sell-me-on-nl-or-wb/#findComment-4115725 Share on other sites

SkimaskMohawk
Here's the thing, you don't need to use the RoW. If you think about it an entire legion running a terror assault works very poorly, a small force doing it would be far more effective; the RoW scales super poorly for a reason. Too many resources would be allocated to deal with those threats that the rest of a list could run a muck Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310713-sell-me-on-nl-or-wb/#findComment-4115834 Share on other sites
