Lucretius Corvo Information?

Recommended Posts

Greetings, brothers. As the title says, I am looking for information on Corvo. I am mainly interested if he is mentioned in the HH Book: Tempest. I just want to learn more about the Novamarines founder and the type of Astartes he was. Also curious if maybe even a marine from his company was pictured in the book. Any and all information will be greatly appreciated, even if not from Tempest. The Lexicanum article is sweet but short. Thanks, all.

Corvo has his own HH short story The Laurels of Defiance. It's been a while since I read it, but from what I recall, he was the Captain of the 90th Company and wore MKIII plate in the quartered blue and white heraldry that the Novamarines Chapter would later adopt as their own.

Ah, thank you. I just googled it, sounds pretty good. I didn't find much, but one little review said something about "it shows not all Ultramarines want to be celebrated as heroes." Not quite sure what that means? Maybe Corvo's reaction to being celebrated for his actions? It looks like it is only available in the Sedition's Gate anthology. Which means it will be almost impossible to get my hands on. I'll try to dig something up.

Here is Honourum's mention in Tempest:

It was not only isolated colonies which fell under the onslaught of the Traitor armada. Honourum was at that time the furthest military outpost of the XIIIth Legion from Ultramar, seized in battle during the Imperium's expansion into the galaxy and fortified by the Ultramarines as a way-station for forces prosecuting the wars of the Great Crusade. Honourum was no unprotected colony world, but was garrisoned by a full company of the XIIIth Legion under the command of one Captain-Praetor Arcaes Odenathus as well as several regiments of Solar Auxilia raised from amongst the teeming industrial cities of that world. Yet when the blood-mad Primarch of the World Eaters came howling against the walls of Honourum's cities, the warriors of two full Legions at his back, there was little the defenders could do except delay the inevitable slaughter. The battle for Honorum lasted barely a day, but the killing continued for weeks as the berserk World Eaters and Gal Vorbak hunted the few auxilia survivors and holdout bands of Ultramarines through the gutted carcasses of its cities. Leaving Honourum in such ruin that even in these latter years it has yet to fully recover, the Traitor Primarchs disappear from attempts to trace their course.

Tempest, pg 18

"Even in these latter years" means mid to late Scouring, by the way.

From what I recall, Corvo was a real soldier's soldier. He just wanted to do his job. He was never really on board with Guilliman's plans to eventually shift the Ultramarines to being peace-time leaders either. He was extremely uncomfortable receiving accolades or interacting with non-astartes, despite Guilliman's best efforts to integrate the legion with human populations. He also received a rather off-hand comment from Lion El'Johnson about how his quartered heraldry, which comes from his original homeworld, pre-500 Worlds, iirc, may be taken as a sign of split loyalties between legion and homeworld.

Here's something you won't find in any book - Guy Haley told me face to face that Corvo is based on Mrs Haley!

I read the story on the first night of last year's HH Weekender. The story of a battle is being told in flashback during a banquet on Macragge where Guilliman is trying to boost morale and support from the civilian population by wheeling out decorated war heroes.

It seemed to me that there was a parallel with the way GW wheel out their writers at events. Since the story was written for an event anthology when I found myself sitting next to Guy in the bar the next day I asked if it was a subtle protest.

He told me not at all, he loves such events but his wife is more reserved and would hate being the centre of attention like that and so she was part of the basis for Corvo.

Just checked the book and it mentions that Corvo is tall even for a marine. He wears MK3 plate because he's a void war specialist. His armour and back banner bear his quartered heraldry.

Although he's not afraid to get his hands dirty the story is mainly about his command rather than personal combat so the only weapon I saw mentioned in a skim read was a bolter.

Well his blog Haley's Comment frequently features photos of his son and his dog but not his wife so I can't say for certain that she's not a genewrought transhuman but it's probably just that she values her privacy. If anyone's going to suggest otherwise I think we need to leave that to Guy himself.

The type to face down three Primarchs at their own victory party:

An expectant air formed. An uncomfortable silence followed.

The Lion spoke. ‘Are you not forgetting something, captain?’

‘Am I, my lord?’ said Corvo.

‘All others honoured here today have renewed their oaths to your Legion, and to the Imperium. Will you not do the same?’

‘No, my lord.’

There was a sound akin to a soft wind, the sound of a world gasping.

The Lion’s face hardened. Sanguinius looked to his brothers.

‘Are you a traitor, then?’ asked the Lion.

Corvo drew his gladius. The Space Marines on the dais brought their weapons up, but Guilliman stayed them with a hand. Corvo held the sword high above his head, blade flat upon his palms.

‘I do not renew my oath, my lords, for the oaths of an Ultramarine are forever binding. I am not like my traitor kin to renounce their solemn promises. I have sworn already to serve the Imperium, the Emperor, the Legion and all of mankind, and through those oaths my lords have my sword until death takes me. You ask me to renew that which needs no renewal, for the oaths of an Ultramarine are eternal. To speak them again implies a weakness inherent to them. And there is no weakness. Not in my arm, nor in my mind, nor my word. I am an Ultramarine. I march for Macragge and the Emperor for evermore, as I have pledged. I need not do so again.’

I can't say for certain that she's not a genewrought transhuman

She's Swedish, IIRC, so the next best thing.
