The age old question, how stick with your legion?

Recommended Posts

Olla fellow Legionnaires

Recently the FW open day picture have been circling around the forum and social media,to me personally the Blood angels upgrade kit is very astounding and it kinda shook me cause I made me think about playing White Scars or Blood angels.

If I could tell you a short thing,I've been yo-yoing between World eaters,Raven guard,Death Guard,Imperial Fist,Night Lords,Iron warriors,and then White Scars.

So my question is,how do you stay loyal to the legion you choose?

Atm I have been hording the basic kits like tacticals and sorts but not legion upgrade kits.

thanks!

For me, I made a decision when only two of the Heresy rule books had come out and there were only 8 Legions to choose from. Since I don't play the game, the rules for individual Legions had little meaning to me, but some of them did offer nice flavor choices in the form of unique weapons or other upgrades. I took a good little while to look over the ones that interested me and read through their fluff a few times, pored over the art, and ran through possible alternate color schemes in my head. I also considered where in the timeline I wanted to set my chosen army as it can can have a huge impact on the make up and attitude of the Legion. For me, one of those Legions eventually whispered to me a lot louder than the other ones did.

Since then, I have been tempted by other new shiny releases, and I am planning on building a small force of my second choice, but beyond that, I don't know what else to offer. It can be tough to stick with one Legion when so many are so tempting.

Yeah, that's how I feel the new shiny releases are very tempting,I'm currently Binding myself by listening to Scars audibook all the time!

to be honest Fear to tread didnt really make me hooked on BA,but the model looks so awesome!

It is hard, I swap legion a lot, when I feel like changing I try to give myself a few days cooling off before I buy/make anything to see if I'm still keen.

At the moment I'm trying to stick with the RG, and I can always expand into the Shattered. I also have another little Legion project but its more a personal painting thing.

One off models. Just try it; paint that one idea you have, on that one model you want. Scratch the itch, man, or it won't go away.

Plus, it's just refreshing to paint something strange once in a while, to break up some of the repetitive monotony. I currently have a single VI Legion guy chillin' with a table full of Iron Warriors and Iconoclasts, because.... well, because. Why the hell not?

Also, you can get a feel of what it would be like to stick with that paintjob through a whole army. I like painting white, for example, but the thought of painting a whole army of white plate.... yeah, that pretty much put a nail in the V Legion's coffin for me, lol.

Have you also read the fluff behind the legions ? sometimes a story of one of their great battles can make you feel something for one legion over the others.

Of course, as brothers Scribe and Hyenidae have said, its always possible to play two allied legions, or to paint some models from another legion, acting as "guests" : think of the equeries, which are sorts of ambassadors to different legions.

If you want to hear about each of the legions that have been done up until now, I'd recomend also listening to the Independent characters podcast, with their coverage of the Horus Heresy books from Forge World, it might give you some ideas of how to choose a legion.

But you're asking how to stay loyal to one legion ? Do you mean in the painting or the models collected, etc. ? If its for the painting, others have answered that question. If it's for choosing models, then nothing stops you from picking some that don't fit at first glance with the Legion, like super-heavy tanks for the Alpha Legion : Legiones Astartes are large enough for you to create what you want in them, even going as far as to create chapters (inside the legion) with a slightly divergent colour scheme and who don't fight in the normal legion way...

Sorry if this post seems to be rambling unsure.png

That's a lot of legions you've been toying with the idea of lol.

Ever since the announcement of HH I have been very keen to start either an Emperor's Children or Iron Warriors army. The fluff and look of both legions have always stood out for me, depsite being amost polar opposites to each other. Depite EC being my absolute favourite, Fulgrim was highly disappointing and having practiced painting purple and getting good results, the time taken to do it was what put me off. Iron Warriors, for me, are infinitely quicker to paint, which ultimately swayed my decision. Don't get me wrong, I'm interested in other legions the same way you are, but you can't be seduced by every new toy that comes out or you'll never finish anything. :)

That's nothing, my list of legions im considering is genuinely on 16 at this point.

People who can stick with one legion astound me.

lol It's called 'making your bed and lying in it'.

Perhaps you have commitment issues tongue.png Just kidding. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have an army for every legion as well, but that's completely impractical...especially when you play about 20 other games.

I don't know how other people choose their armies, but in order of priority I'd probably look at: aesthetics (scheme and models), time to paint, fluff, and then rules. It depends how competitive you are where you'd place rules.

My method is working pretty well for me... I work on two at the same time as part of the same project. You come up with a narrative for why these two legions might be in the same place or fighting alongside/against each other, and go for it. This lets me swap between the two different legions as I like. For example, I'm now working on Death Guard because I waned a little on my Iron Hands, but after three/four months of DG, I'm swinging back again. It helps if you pick two somewhat different schemes so that it doesn't feel like you're just painting the same thing a slghtlly different way.

Also, the Monthly 30k Casual Painting Thread run by Kor'Vesh has been an absolute boon to my painting. Sign up, get painting and you'll have a bunch of us spurring you on to meet your monthly goals.

It is hard to commit though. I kinda had to put myself in the mindset that I was signing a contract. So as nice as all those new releases and previews are, they can stay nice outside of my collection for now. That way, when I've finished my X and XIV project, I can move on to the next one, and all the excitement and cool-factor of finally getting those new minis or sets that have been released since can motivate me in my next project, which is either going to be UM & SoH, BA & NL or DA & AL.

I have two methods

1. I make up army lists for other legions on Battlescribe, it satisfies at least part of the itch for me

2. I make 'exchange student' models from other legions, officers from the other legions who might have worked with my Company or come here to learn the way they make war. Just being able to make a single character from another legion can be enough for me.

Hey bro!

I have a similar issue, initially I liked Death Guard, and even had many DG specific units, however, they were just not cutting it for me in how I wanted to play, and the fluff and I just wasn't fully down with them, and even though I still like them, they are not the force I identify most strongly with now.

Instead I love the Imperial Fists and the badassness that is the Battle of Terra, and I also loved the White Scars due to the fluff and Mongol theme. I also have a Reaver titan to paint ....AAAAAHHH how am i gonna do all of this!??!?!

Simple.

1) do Imperial Fists NOW because they are out now and I can enjoy painting them with my new airbrush and just making them individual warriors each single marine.

2) do Scars when they get bullock pattern jetbikes in future, as this is how i envision my Scars army, jetbike heavy, and with characters such as the Khan, and Yesugei

3) do my Reaver this summer when I have more time to devote to the single giant model it is.

4) combine them all for a Defenders of Terra Apocalypse list.

overall come up with a strategy for making it work.

Defenders of Terra is something I would love to do, imagine Imperial Fists, Blood Angels, Custodes, Sisters of Silence led by the big E.

And White Scars msn-wink.gif

Everyone forgets the white scars ;) as the Khagan reminds us in Scars ;)

They are legit quickly becoming one of my favourites.

Damn I did miss them. Cos RG and WS don't get on. For whatever reason.

Don't worry, everyone does! I think it's because of something after the heresy.

They're one of mine too AfroCampbell. Entirely because of Chris Wraight.

It's great that people here are planning a Siege of Terra force... Personally I think I will start planning my Siege of Terra themed army when my non existent children are graduating university. As for now, I second what Hyaenidae said about painting a single model or character from a legion you're thinking about. I've bought a few random units/models from FW as a way of not jumping ship on my current legion project and I must say it is working very well.

Personally? I have a plan and I invest character into the army. I have been a bit of a hobby moth flitting between shinies up until now but since I invested in making an Imperial Fist force (possibly my favourite legion), I have looked forward to what projects I could do afterwards. So far the list goes: Iron Warrior army, The Untaken army (DIY renegades that will use legion rules) and Conflagrators killteam/500 point force (DIY Chapter). Two of these three are in the pipeline purely because of their background and character that I created. Should I feel like I need to delve back into 'proper' 30k, then I can always revisit my Fists or my (as yet unstarted) Iron Warriors and perhaps explore the background of them a little further.

What made my Salamanders decision easy was mental health. With my focus and attention issues, I've only been able to really give attention to one, so I don't spend time reading about the others. Salamanders just happened to be suggested to me when I was looking for a go-with for my LotD, and they caught my attention quickly.
