The age old question, how stick with your legion?

Recommended Posts

I've read all the legion background and novels,

If talking about the most memorable novel ATM it's Scars.

But still I havent found a way to stick to 1 legion,

maybe I should wait for the new rules to come out at december?

EDIT:

for Primarch or characters model,I only have Angron painted, cause I love the model!

find some threads to follow that really inspire you I play fists (Space Knights :cuss YEAH). There is a thread in the WIP section with brother Heinrich and Flint13 any time I get bored of painting yellow (like my recent Vindicator . . .tanks are just dull for me so far) I read some of Flint's fluff and I just wanna make more Imperial Fist and defend the heck out a the imperial palace

I set myself a high goal in terms of what I want out of my Legion force and I just stick to it. I've contemplated making Night Lords or Sons of Horus as an allied contingent for my Death Guard, but at the end of the day I refuse to buy into another Legion until I've finished my main force... with the objective of 6 full squads of Cataphractii in Spartans, I've gotten myself in quite deep. I've deviated from time to time, I've got almost 4 full squads of Tactical Marines, but I've stuck within the Legion itself.

I wanted a loyalist Legion that was relatively "standard" - not overly-defined by its homeworld's culture (Wolves, Scars) specialized philosophy of war (raven guard, iron hands, sallies). I settled on the IF, as my UM test models didn't appeal. Plus, I really loved "Lightning Tower."

I guess I keep going out of stubbornness -- and not wanting to have to paint duplicate models for 4-5 armies.

Defenders of Terra is something I would love to do, imagine Imperial Fists, Blood Angels, Custodes, Sisters of Silence led by the big E.

And White Scars msn-wink.gif

Damn I did miss them. Cos RG and WS don't get on. For whatever reason.

Considering how many times they mention in the book how the V Legion is easily forgotten, I have to admit I'm quite amused by this.

For me it was the first chapter I played (Soul Drinkers) that opened the way for my legion, I have stuck to that legion for a while now but I am getting ready to start my second. I invested in the 4X4 Zone mortalis set from FW, it allows me to focus on my legion of choice but fules ideas for 1000pt ZM lists. For the other legions I like I get to add the shiny new toys to the growing list of legions I must have.

Dont know if anyone's already stated this, but ill state what I do.

I found the legion that suits me the best, perhaps they aren't the best rules wise, perhaps the aren't among the legions who have the best models (but im pretty lucky in both those categories to be quite frank :) ) but they are the legion that I could envision myself fighting beside (I know you dont get to decide your legion, but you get what im saying) If you cant see yourself commanding or fighting alongside your fellow legionaries for a common goal, they you most likely will deviate from the project.

Long story short, stick with the legion that embodies you, and do up small allied forces or "exchange marines" to keep your modelling mood from stalling on painters burnout. (prime example are a squad of BA I have in my army to keep me from burning out on yellow). You could also look for alternate schemes to keep the painting interesting.

For some it might help to find the one that embodies the what you like and that you see in yourself. For others it might help to look for those qualities you would like to have or maybe even things that are the opposite of you that embodies your view of great "villians". My 40k army is a Corsair themed Dark Eldar army (Kabal/Cult), they are in no way an imbodiment of myself but are instead the kind of "evil villainous" bastards that personify what I think evil should be like. That has kept me with them over the years and as a result I have only built allies around the Cosair theme (I have Some FW Eldar Corsairs in the form of Corsairs, Hornets, and Wasps, as well as Harlequins). It all fits within the theme and narrative of the faction I chose to invest in.

What had me select the Imperial Fist was more along the qualities I like about myself, Rogal Dorn's approach to conducting warfare also spoke to me more then Sigismunds but it was the base concepts of the Legion that best fit me and I'm sure I'm here to stay even if the rules are later not advantageous (I did mention that I play Dark Eldar without D-weapon allies already didn't I? smile.png)

Of course this is all very subject to the individual and this kind of approach might not work from many.

Pick Alpha Legion, then lie about your colors (Whatever legion are favoring at the moment) and steal everyone else's units hahaha.

I'll echo many of the posts here and agree that it's a personal thing. It definately helps to join a narrative campaign with ongoing continuity. That way your army starts growing on you, as your personal soldiers. They've gone through countless campaigns with through thick and thin so you can't see yourself abandoning them on a whim.

One idea that I had floating around was to find 4 other mates and group-buy all the Legion specific infanty units. That way you'll at least have a showcase of all the kickass resin crack at a fraction of the price. I guarantee you'll find a model and a color scheme that wins across the board for you. Bonus: Run a painting challenge between the 5 of you as an incentive; winner doesn't pay their fifth for the next unit all of you decide to buy.

Well,I have been lucid dreaming all of the legions I've been hooked on from World Eaters,Iron Warriors,Death Guards,NIght Lords,Alpha Legion,Raven Guard,Blood Angels,White Scars,Imperial Fist. I've gotta say,I dig the aspect of Space marines as the noble defenders, that they are build not only to conquer but as an icon for other humans and as their guardians,So I gotta say that the Salamanders and Blood Angels win at this, but for the White Scars, they aren't very known at this? but I like their Care free attitude, like some of their sayings in Chogorian "you laugh while you kill" that's kinda deep IMO. Thinking about fighting side by side,I've gotta say Blood angels,Salamanders, and Raven Guards they IMO are some of the best legion to work along with. While I'm kinda think with Alpha legion it's like having some foreign government agents in your turf of command and not knowing, like some covert Ops Black Ops unit

I only have 1 bud that plays Horus Heresy,he got the same dilema with me,picking a legion. But he is a bit hooked on Sons of Horus,so now we are both waiting for the VI book to came out to continue our 30k project

The reason that I was drawn into the HH was that I wanted to have at least one model from each of the First Founding legions. I was drawn to that damn chart which is on page 5 or 6 of every 40k Space Marines codex. Something about that chart made me have to delve into each of the Heresy legions. I currently (5 years later) have 2 finished armies (III and V) and have a squad or 2 from 13 legions and will have models painted from 16, by next year. I love things about every legion and hate things about every legion. That is why I am so enamored by the HH. No legion is perfect and no legion sucks completely, spanning the Unification Wars to heresy. So much possibility.

I'm often tempted by the lures of other Legions, but then I remember I'm collecting the proud Ultramarines and the illustrious Sons of Horus, and no one compares to those!

Edit:

On a more serious note, it's very hard. As a collector I am tempted by the unique, fantastic models exclusive to the various Legions. The Death Guard are a constant temptation.

When I was first introduced to 30k, I remember saying I hated the world eaters and found then boring and dull. But eventually something just dropped and I was suddenly like "why the hell am I not doing these guys?". I think you find that one thing you enjoy about a legion and the rest just fits in.

Something about mentalist running around with chain axes murdering anyone and everything.... That's something I can get on board with

Pretty much been in love with the history of the VIII and IX Legions since I picked up Index Astartes: Volume 3. Now that I have legion rules to reflect those armies and and awesome expansion of the fluff, I'm building both. After I finish 1750 points of Blood Angels I'm going to convert my Night Lords over to 30k as well.

I've always prayed for someone to write a short of the VIII and IX Legions at war on a rainstorm lashed tomb world, flat plains of marble and granite headstones and mausoleums, becoming corridors and killzones. The skies alight with Raptor and Angel, threading the rainfall with blood and pieces of the slain, as Legionnaires of polar contrasting heraldry on the ground leap low tombs in 3-to-5 second rushes, targeting shadows in the storm. All are shown for what they truly are in the flashes of lightning, murderer and secular saint, Blood's Honour and Midnight Clad, splitting the air with booms as chest-shaking as the bolter fire that lances through their warplate.

*sigh* Make it so, Brother Heinrich. Make it so.

Ive been a long time fan of Ultramarines, Luna Wolves and Iron Warriors fluff, as well as the primarchs of each legion respectively. I have a few failed legion attempts. So, right now Im hanging on to this raven guard idea I have, the Pale Nomads. I dont like Corax, I dont like the raven guard colour scheme or in general their guerrilla freedom fighter chracter. So what I did was to create my chapter/company of the XIXth legion, with a unique colour scheme that still fits well with the standard legion heraldry, their are brutal oppresors and terror fighters rather than freedom fighters, and aesthetically they are a mix of the legion of old (pteruges, crests and aquilas) and tribal characteristics, such as tattoos, grim trophies and interesting haircuts.

Make your own force brother! You like legion X, but prefer Y fighting style and Z character. Mix it up!

(Too bad I wont get a primarch in my force, because Im no fan of Corax. Although I might get him anyways... And to be fair, I still have other legion ideas running around in my head, but none as interesting as this one).

I'm trying to stick with word bearers but I really want a full breacher army with lots of units with shields which other armies like Ultramarines and imperial fists seem to do better though I just don't like their colour schemes

There is honour in the grey of Unification. Do not turn from Terra's Light, brother.

Our Father was wrong.

Well for me, the key thing is I have a definite idea/theme for what I want to do with my Imperial Fists army, so that's helped a lot, and like someone mentioned on the previous page, I have a tendency to list-build on Battlescribe. Other than being strapped for cash, the other method keeping it under control is telling myself to finish my 40k armies before I go on to do a Luna Wolves army.
