Heresy era XIII Legion

So I decided to start a HH Ultramarines army ( I already have a fairly large 40k UM army). I got the primarch, the preator set and the signal master/champion set. Now i need to add some bodies but I cannot decide what type of tactical marines are appropriate. There are 2 UM upgrade set for UM and I am wondering if they are better to represent veterans or if they are the best way to represent the UM rank and files. Should I use MK 2, 3 or 4? They all look great I just want to be as authentic as possible and since its all fairly expensive I dont want want too make mistakes!

Also once I get the infantry what should I add? A daradeo dread? Sicaran? What else works well and is typical XIII legion?

Thank you very much for all the inputs!

Hey smile.png

it depends on what you want to play, but generally are the UMs allrounder. As a core I would suggest 2 Tactical squats either 2x10 man with bolters in a Rhino or 2x20 man on foot, again depends on what you like to play, and what rite of war you'll choose.

I think the Ultraboys like Mark 4 but don't nail me down on that.

To give you some insperation here is a link to a tactica-webpage if you don't mind a little profanety: msn-wink.gif

you can do a lot with painting and a little bit of sculpting (laurel wreath for example)

here are expamples of differnt Markings, but you should denetly get the book ( Horus Heresy 5) if you don't own it already.

I would say that the rank and file of almost any legion are represented by just the basic armour sets and transfers on shoulders its units that you want to stick out or detail as veterans that get the upgrade packs at least that's how I do my fists the sergeants and vox and vexillia guys get maybe some special shoulder pads and the veteran Sargeant gets a special chest piece but other then that tacs get a pretty generic look

I do how ever here you on the expensive so what I have done is slide a few fancy bits and cc weapons on to a few tacs so I can trim down and use just the blingyest models to represent veteran tacs so that I essentially get 2 units in one. this gives you more FOC bang for you're buck

Hey, good to see a fellow son of guilliman!

So, according to Tempest, the praetor helm was given to veterans and higher ups. The website says it was also given to newly raised chapters. So it really depends. If your going to base your army off the 4th company like me, then imo the praetor should be reserved for veterans, sergeants, ect.

The best choice of armor is either mk 2 or 4 imo. Id say 50% mk 4, 40% mk 2, 10% whatever else you want. (For tac marines at least.) Again i am inclined to believe that veterans would wear mk 2, while new recruits would get mk 4, but that i just my interpretation from tempest.
