Hope everyone had a good Halloween....

Inspired by the season, work has begun on the terror markings. See what you think.

Ok so let me start off by saying I really love your blue, nice and deep without being overly dark.

Daud looks phenomenal and that axe is ridiculous, I love it! From where did you procure such a weapon?

And your terror marking is amazing. The skull is perfect with the cracks and the fanged maw. Keep up the great work!

Maybe I missed it but do you plan on putting lightning onto any of these guys?

Thanks Black_out!

Glad you like how Daud is coming along. He's still very much a work in progress, but I'm pretty happy so far. The axe is actually the standard one that comes with the Krell model (the WHFB figure I used as the base). I like it because of the size, but also because it has some cool winged skulls on the face of the blades, which seems pretty appropriate for Night Lords.

Appreciate the comment about the terror markings... It's a bit of a departure from my normal skulls. A couple of extra washes of Seraphim Sepia which gave a surprisingly nice antiquey look that I thought was pretty cool. I haven't started on the lightning yet, but it will definitely happen. When it does, I'll need to keep reminding myself of the "less is more" train of thought. I'm afraid that otherwise they might get too cluttered.

About half will get skulls. All will get lightning strikes.

Honestly, I'm quite interested to see how it all turns out

OK B&C, I need the benefit of your wisdom please!!!

I started on the Lightning.... But I'm not hugely happy with it do far. See what you think.

Initially I laid down a broad outline of Macragge blue, a thin jagged line of Calgar blue, a detail line of Administratum grey, and finished with a highlight of Ceramite white. I didn't like how it looked, so washed it with Guilliman blue before adding another set of white highlights.

As I say, I'm not 100% happy. So, my question is how do I improve the effect? Do they need to be more jagged? Do I need to add more lightning strikes? Should I start again? What d'ya think?

As always, comments and criticism are welcome.

So what I've noticed for lightning is that the more times you try and do the same line, the easier it is to screw up. With that in mind I just use fortress grey for my lightning. As for the technique go for diagonal non standard lines with dips and zags and then arc off of those.

Here's a quick little MSPaint thing I made that kind of shows what I mean:

And we're back. Thanks for the comments guys.

Heh! Cheers Black_out... Once upon a time I was ok at it, but it's been a while - seems like I have forgotten... Ah well!

@SkimaskMohawk - Cheers mate, I appreciate the tips. It helped jog the muscle memory. Though, as you'll see I think the "stop when you feel is appropriate", was followed more than my earlier rule of "less is more". Oops!

So, lightning attempt number two... I think I now need to go back and erase some of the lightning strikes. I feel some of the models are looking a little cluttered. What do you think?

Cheers Black_out...

Colors are just a variation on the original attempt. Wide band of very watered down Altdorf Blue. Thin jagged band (per SkimaskMohawk's tutorial) of Altdorf, overlayed with a 3:1 Altdorf Blue:Ceramite White... Finally a 1:3 Altdorf Blue:Ceramite White layer, mostly just where the branches of lightning split.

Glad you like them so far. The two above are quite toned down though... Lightning only appears on a few of panels of armour. Some I took much further - the worst offenders are...

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Night%20Lords/In%20Progress/AA4C89BF-0CD2-4AA9-9E98-9142C32744C7.jpg

Especially,

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Night%20Lords/In%20Progress/D942D761-20B0-4FA1-B6DB-17B4CC47045E.jpg

As you can see, I added extra strikes on quite a few panels. Perhaps too many in some cases. So, I may need to blue out some of the "extra" extra lightning strikes. I'll hold off until I have more fully painted Claws though - these models might be able to hide when surrounded by others.

Anyway, that's all for now. Bases will come next, then weapons. Which will happen soon.

As always, comments and criticisms are welcome.

The last guy... The pauldron is the big offender, lightning doesn't spiral out like that. Really should only be running in one direction, I think that's what makes that look funny to me.

Maybe just one arcing bolt per limb?

I like 'em all, really, but yes, the last few look like they could have some of the lightning toned down some.

Keep it up!

Thanks for all the comments folks, I appreciate it!

@Venomlust - thanks mate I appreciate it! That's what I was going for - an "I'm just playing with my food" kind of look...

@ Bryan Blaire - thanks for the thoughts... Yeah, one per limb might do it. Or just one side maybe? Like I said above, I just need to keep repeating "less is more!" Eventually it'll sink in. Maybe.

@SkimaskMohawk - Thanks man. Heh! I imagine that someone, somewhere has said that about every Night Lord army ever painted... Personally, I like the level you hit on your models. I notice that, like Bryan Blaire suggests I do, you have a lot of lightning, but it's not on every Armour panel. I think that's the key.

@Bryan Blaire $ SkimaskMohawk - re: the strange pauldron - I absolutely agree. That guy was something of an experiment. I know it isn't how lightning works IRL, but I saw...

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Night%20Lords/In%20Progress/A8EE5C5A-1A11-49B5-9B44-1C8037D45492.jpg

... and wanted to see if I could reproduce it. It didn't work very well, but it was worth a shot, right?

So, the process of removing lightning continues, but even with just a few less, I'm liking them more. No new pics of them, but in the meantime, see what you think of the progress on Daud...

Looking good, I find it very tricky to hit the right amount on models with a high amount of ornamentation as it all starts to clutter up the models.

As for the FW art work, that's far more ambitious then I think is realistic without an amazing amount of skill and minute detail work

@SkimaskMohawk - Cheers mate, I appreciate it! And, yeah, I agree it was ambitious, but nothing ventured... Though it was mostly the idea of the lightning storm I liked. Shame it didn't work.

@Venomlust - hah! Never saw that before!

So, I have a small update. Right now, I'm doing the boring highlighting on bolters and what have you - however, I got a little work done on Daud's axe.... See what you think.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Night%20Lords/In%20Progress/FE754AEB-3032-45D1-AA48-B016D6769C1A.jpg

As you can see, I opted for blue fire... A large part of me thinks I should have gone for red highlights instead. Thoughts?

More work completed on the terror markings... Not quite as happy as I was with the ones at the top of the page, but still passable I think...

  • 3 weeks later...

Alrighty.... There was a slight delay in activity as I moved house, city, country and continent... It's just as much of a pain as you'd imagine... But things are finally starting to get back to normal.

The first squad isn't finished yet, but since I have access to a few more hobby toys, it's time for a change of pace...

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Night%20Lords/In%20Progress/7FE803F9-3AD6-4D4D-9D4B-652C8CE1DAD7.jpg

I'm not going to paint all these at once, but figured I'd get the base coats down so they're all starting from the same point.

I'm really looking forward to the Contemptor Dread... I used a fairly basic pose, but it's the first one I have put together, so figured baby steps...

Anyway, more soon.

As always, comments and criticism (though there's not much to comment on at this point, I grant you) are welcome.

Cheers,

Widowmaker
