Ave Dominus Nox!

Recommended Posts

Cheers guys, I appreciate the comments...

@Blackout - Cheers buddy, baby steps, but the work continues. More below...

@codyrstuart - Thanks mate! I'm glad you like them. I'm trying to take a little more care over these guys than dome of my other painting.

@Augustus b'Raass - Thank you sir! Coming from you, that's high praise indeed! I've followed your work for quite some time, and, IMHO, it's the blue-ribbon standard for Night Lords around here. I hope I even start to come close.

But enough chatter...

I've got a couple more coats of paint down... finished the red, and started a little bone. See what you think.

The Contemptor (as you can see, work has started on the internals of the power claw),

And, of course, Sevetar

Still lousy pics I'm afraid, but I think the idea comes through.

So, once the bone is finished, I'll be mostly done... some flesh... some additional details... the weapons... the bases... and maybe some freehand terror markings...

So, not really done at all, but it's starting to come together. What d'ya think so far?

As always, comments and criticisms are welcome.

Cheers,

Widowmaker.

Nice! The edged highlighting look great - giving the blue a deeper hue. Also thanks for the kind words, but Brother Heinrich and several others deserve the high praise more than I do.

I like your bone and the red you used for the wings on the dread's front. Could you give me/us a recipe? Cheers. :tu:

Oh, I definitely walk in the shadows of giants with my Night Lords... Heinrich's collection perfectly captures the hugely sinister side of the NL, and is filled with great conversions... Dan the Daemon, Tarvick and DarkVen all have awesome armies from which I've drawn inspiration, not just for these but other armies too... And of course there are many, many more - including some doesn't exclude others. But I think yours are probably the most macabre...

Thanks for the compliments about the painting. The methods basically involve shades or glazes between steps to try and help with color transitions. I know how to wet blend, I just find it a pain in the tail for RAF models. This has a whole lot of steps (a stupid number really - I just kept going till I was happy with it), but if you batch paint (even just in batches of 5) it's pretty fast.

The red is as follows -

• Khorne Red base coat,

• Heavy Nuln Oil wash (I left the model upsides down to dry because a wanted the point of the wing membrane to be very dark)

• Khorne Red layer on wings and spine, leaving some of the existing layer showing, especially in deep recesses where spines meet membrane

• Wash of Carroburg Crimson (again drying upside down)

• Khorne Red layer, again leaving some of existing layers showing

• Wazdakka Red along the spines of the wings, and a thin layer on the membrane, as always leaving previous layers showing.

• Glaze of Bloodletter over whole model

• Wazdakka Red edge highlight along the spines of the wings, and a thin layer on the membrane, again leaving previous layers showing.

• Wild Rider Red, edge highlights on spines, and very thin layer on membrane, once again inside the area of the previous layers.

• Glaze of Bloodletter over whole

• Fine highlights of Wild Rider Red on spines.

The bone will follow the same theory, starting with Rhinox hide, through Zandri Dust up to Ushabati bone. Right now, the steps are...

• Rhinox Hide base coat,

• Zhandri Dust over most of it, leaving Rhinox Hide in the deepest areas. I used very thin coats of the Zandri Dust, and in some places, used it to build up ridges in the bone color...

I know this is the back of the skull and won't ever be seen, but it's more noticeable here than on the brow.

• Wash of Agrax Earthshade

• Zandri Dust layers highlighting the existing layers...

Which is where we're at now.

After this, I'll add a layer of Ushabati Bone, a wash of Seraphim Sepia, a layer of Ushabati Bone, a layer of 2:1 Ushabati Bone and White Scar, another (THIN) wash of Seraphim Sepia, before fine highlights of 2:1 Ushabati Bone and White Scar and if it needs it, a layer of 1:2 Ushabati Bone and White Scar. Which will take it to what you can see on the terror markings posted at the top of page 2.

Having written them both out, it seems ridiculously long, but it goes pretty quickly if you're batch painting.

Hope it helps.

Cheers,

Widowmaker

And we're back!

Ok folks, so the work continues... The terror markings are done - though I'm wondering if I should put the on all 5 models... Guns have been added... Still some way to go, but see what you think...

So... Still a few steps to go, but I think they're coming out ok. Thoughts?

As always, comments and criticism welcome...

Please don,t hold back the terror markings - yours are excellent and we can learn something from you about them. :tu:

Your blue, as I said before, is really nice and dark, the bronze pops and overall your Night Lords are a pleasure to look at. Crisp aclean.

I alos like your contemptor's pose. At first I thought his legs where a bit static, but he grew on me and now I see him as having just started firing at an enemy that just popped up to his right.

Nice.

  • 2 months later...

And we're back....

Hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Year.

I had a pretty busy holiday period traveling hither and yon, after which I spent a couple of weeks "progressing" my Night Lords army... by painting 60 Blood Angels...

Very helpful I'm sure you'll agree!

Thanks for the comments guys!

@SkimaskMohawk - Thanks man. I have some free time at the moment, so I'm getting to give these guys extra love

@Mister Feral - Cheers mate! Yeah, I love the BaC box - it's a great source of bits that fit well into both chaos and imperial 40k armies. Glad you like the terror markings!

More to come soon folks - stay tuned!

Cheers,

Widowmaker
