The Laurel of Defiance by Guy Haley.
Lucretius Corvo, the Killer of Titans, is to be honoured by primarch Guilliman on Macragge for his actions during the Shadow Crusade.  Through his memory, we relive the events that led to the birth of his moniker, and that not all Ultramarines want to be lauded as heroes.

Following the events of The Unremembered Empire, this story is a wonderfully  self-contained piece that might just tip its hat in the direction of a particular second founding chapter.  Corvo makes for an exciting hero largely because he isn’t what you’d expect from the XIII Legion.

I’ve been really impressed with everything I’ve managed to acquire of Guy’s.  This is no exception.  The nobility and ceremony of the present day sections are mirrored by the gutsy action and bloodshed of the flashbacks.  The titan mentioned isn’t what you’d expect, and naturally ramps up the drama and danger of the galaxy as it stands.

The Laurel of Defiance is lovely.  Pacy action is anchored by character development, slow plotting, and some fabulous sections between Astartes in between battles.
