Rand Winters
Greetings everyone! This is the second time I have tried to post this, but the first time I think i messed up in creating my account and the thread was deleted (how embarassing). I hope this is not for a violation of any forum rules, in which case I wasn't aware and I apologize! Anyhow, I am relatively new to the hobby, having started in May 2014, a couple weeks before 7th edition came out. My brothers-in-law got me into it, and I immediately gravitated towards Space Wolves, and I have not for a moment regretted my decision! I played Battle Fleet Gothic (Chaos fleet) for about only 6 months back in 2004, but never painted my models or got into it very much. That is the extent of my wargaming experience before 40k. Since starting, I've been so consumed with the Wolves that I come here regularly to read and learn, but haven't posted until now. Nothing but great advice here, and I have used the tactics and ideas from here more than once in my own army! Today, I would like to get some opinions from fellow Wolf Lords on my custom ThunderLord model. Following the advice others here, I have been using the beastly Wolf Lord, equipped with thunderwolf, Krakenbone sword, and stormshield. It is expensive on points, but worth every bit! I have enjoyed some incredible heroics from this guy, but have never been pleased with the options in the TWC box to make him look as epic as he feels on the tabletop. So I got the idea from an image I saw, where it was basically Krom Dragongaze from the Wolves/Orks boxed kit standing in front of a thunderwolf. I loved the idea, but wanted to make him my own, and to give him a weapon that fits more in line with the Krakenbone Sword. So here is what I came up with. I wish I had a good company shoulderpad for Champions of Fenris, but this still looks quite nice, and fits the model perfectly. While I am pleased with the results, I would like your opinions, brutal if necessary! What can I do differently, what needs work, what looks good? I apologize beforehand if the images are not the best quality! See fluff below images for my interpretation: http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn177/rgjones85/IMG_1962_zps7oolkmkv.jpg http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn177/rgjones85/IMG_1969_zpscwwvvm7k.jpg Wolf Lord Rand Wintersbite - The Shield Wolf Upon ascension to Great Wolf, Logan Grimnar became master not only of his own Great Company, but what effectively amounts to a second Great Company that contains the Priesthood and all Dreadnoughts in the Chapter. Over time, the Loagan understood that to truly be the "Wolf that Stalks Between Stars" his duty required his martial prowess as much as his capable leadership. In his stead, Logan selected the most skilled and capable of the Wolf Guard Battle Leaders within the Champions of Fenris as his retainer. The Shield Wolf, Rand Wintersbite, is acting Wolf Lord for Logan Grimnar while he is not immediately able to fulfill his duty to the Company. Youthful for such a ferocious champion, Rand is already considered the heir apparent for the Great Company should any misfortune befall their fearless leader. As acting Wolf Lord for the Champions of Fenris, he gains access to some of the most vaunted relics in the Fang's arsenal. Choosing for himself the keen Krakenbone sword, he rides into battle on Freyr. The monstrous thunderwolf seems to communicate with Rand with an unspoken bond of trust and respect. Equally dangerous mounted and on foot, Grimnar's faith in the young Lord is absolute and well-founded. Thanks everyone for reading or any input you may have! Gherrick
Welcome, wolf brother. That is a very nice model! How did you make the base? I am astounded that it never occurred to me to put the rider beside the wolf! I've been working on making my TWC customizable since I vary the weapon loadouts all the time. With your picture as inspiration, I think I can make a base that has a spot next to the wolf where I can put pretty much any power armor model, so I can reuse the unmounted Wolf Lord/WGBL models I already have. mercbat
Really cool model. Love the look and quality. I have this idea in my mind for a couple of months, but still uncompleted ETL vows doesn't allow me to start rebranding all my TWC in this style. BlodVargarna
Really like the model. I think you can expect to see this ripped off by lots of people (including me!) Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
Welcome to the fang!! Hope you enjoy yourself here, there's lots to do, and see!! I too love this idea, nicely done. Maybe a pointy finger hand to replace the bolt gun that a model with the KBS and a SS would not have?? Rand Winters
Thanks for the feedback guys! I am humbled and very pleased that any of you guys would consider using this as inspiration! By all means, I hope yours turns out fantastic! @Gherrick - I used Cork sheets for the rocky outcrop on the base. You just need to break the pieces in such a way that the come close to lining up wherever you want a sheer face of the rock. I used three layers for this model. Then for the snow, I used a mixture of modelling snow, white glue, and white acrylic paint in equal parts. Lay it down kinda thick where you want it to accumulate, and then start spreading it out a bit with a brush. Lastly, I used the Tundra Tuft from Army Painter for the grass. @Rune_Priest_Rhapsody - Great point, and awesome idea! Yes, I had considered possibly doing something else with that hand. As you suggested, the pointing hand from the Tactical marines box would suit that very well. My reason for not doing that is for the off-chance I might choose not to take the Stormshield and just rely on the 4+ invul from the Belt. Also, I love the look of the Bolt Pistol in his hand, and the arm has bolt pistol already attached. The difference was not quite enough for me to want to risk the integrity of the arm. Definitely a great idea though! I have a long fang with a missile launcher that I got used, and it didn't have the left arm that supports the weapon. So when I remodelled him, I used the pointing hand from the tact marine box very similarly to how you described. Rand Winters
Thanks Valerian! I put up my new Wolf Lord, and the old one that he replaced. Rand Winters
@ Rune_Priest_Rhapsody - I took your comment to heart regarding a Wolf Lord not being able to have the KBS, SS, and Bolt Pistol. I have searched furiously through my books for the rule that says you must replace the Bolt Pistol (or any weapon) with a "Relic of the Great Wolf" and haven't found it yet. I've checked the standard codex, the champions supplement, and the FAQ/Errata from GW. I understand that if you take a "Relic of the Fang" you "can replace one weapon with one of the following" as per the standard Space Wolves codex Wargear List. However, in order to equip the Krakenbone sword, you must be using the Champions of Fenris supplement and the corresponding detachment. Furthermore, it says rather specifically that if you are a character that is part of the "Champions" detachment that is able to select from "Relics of the Fang" that you "cannot select from those listed in Codex: Space Wolves, but can instead select from Relics of the Great Wolf." It then goes on to describe the section and the point cost. When you get to the section that lists the Relics of the Great Wolf, I don't see any mention of replacing weapons, armor, or anything other wargear. Additionally, when I read the datasheet for the Wolf Lord, it only says that you "may take items from" the lists presented. If you replace the "Relics of the Fang" list for the "Relics of the Great Wolf" list as it explicitly instructs you to do within the supplement, then your character must include all the wargear options that you have, and whichever Relics of the Great Wolf you have purchased for the points listed. Since the Relics of the Great Wolf do not require you to replace weapons in order to equip them, I do not see how it is possible not to include the Bolt Pistol. Now, the stormshield will prevent you from gaining an additional attack from having the extra close combat weapon, so that's not the issue. However, there may someday be a situation where you are charging a multi-wound model that won't be killed by firing beforehand, or that extra overwatch shot that may be the difference between a charge reaching the unit or not. If I'm wrong, I am terribly sorry for wasting your time, and I acknowledge that I'm only embarrassing myself! I am still new and learning, and you are one of the most prominent posters on this forum since I began reading. Please excuse my ignorance! BlodVargarna
I think your reading of the supplement rules is correct. The COF only says here is one of each relic allowed per army. There is no "replace x with y language." Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/311224-custom-wolf-lord-modelling/#findComment-4125993 Share on other sites
