2K Salamanders for C&C

Been playing around with some potential lists for a few legions as I'm off to Warhammer World next week with just under £400 in my pocket to start another legion (and yes I'm excited!)

Salamanders is one of the options and I've tried to write a list to get me started at roughly 2000 points - I know the list I've put below is slightly more than this but I can tweak the wargear later. This is about getting a good base of models with my money so I can start playing with the XVIII soon.

I've chosen Covenant of Fire mostly as I already have 5 Pyroclasts and the use of them as troops seemed to make sense - I know I've not maximised the benefits of the ROW!

Ok, so the list;

HQ

Nomus Rhy'tan

Troops

10 Tactical Marines, Sgt with AA, PF in a Rhino

10 Tactical Marines, Sgt with AA, PF in a Rhino

5 Pyroclasts, Warden with PF

Elites

5 Firedrakes, 4 TH/DSS, 1 HF

Heavy Support

Vindicator

Spartan with Auxiliary Drive, Flare Shield and Armoured Ceramite

Lords Of War

Vulkan

Obviously the Firedrake squad and Vulkan go in the Spartan whilst the pyroclasts hold home objective with Rhy'tan (or strike out on foot if needed) and the Rhino's support for objective grabs. The vindicator provides covering fire for the infantry and helps spartan and the death squad out with anti-tank duty.

It has clear holes, namely anti-air but as a start what do you all think?

Thanks for looking

Hey 1 of 1000,

Well a 2K list with a primarch is hard to pull off, and you have covered the basic idea. I'm guessing you are looking to have a strong representation of Salamander units, hence the Firedrakes. If you are going to stick with the basket of doom (which is pretty standard), then there isn't a lot more you can change. I'd consider the following:

1. Nomus Rhy'tan - I'd say he is one dose of Salamander stuff too much. You aren't using him for anything in particular, and he costs a lot. Buy a cheap centurion of some kind, as you can get the ROW through Vulkan. You could go with any consul, but try to find one with an obvious buff - would a vigilator let you infiltrate your pyroclasts?

2. Firedrakes - everyone loves hammers, but I might drop one for a chainfist if you have one.

3. Vindicator - I'm not sure this is the best choice. I think you want your other tank to be a bit more flexible, or even better at anti-tank. The normal vindi is a bit short ranged for anti-tank, and cover can ruin its day for anti-infantry. Plus the blast is a bit unreliable to shoot anywhere near your deathstar. Assuming you save points on the HQ, you might be able to add a lascannon sicaran, which will give you pseudo air cover, but can really kill anything. The laser-destroyer vindi might be a better option to crush enemy tanks.

On the RoW, I think you are doing fine. It is actually all about the move through cover and the bonus saves for your tanks. Twin-linked meltas are a side benefit, which can be exploited with spare points. I wouldn't bother tailoring a list to it. Also, you COULD consider deploying one rhino empty, infront of your pyroclasts in turn one, and letting them hitch a ride... its a bit risky, but would get them into the fight a bit quicker.

Finally - I've been toying with another way of using Vulkan in a 2k list, without the spartan and firedrake death star. A land raider proteus, with explorator augary web, will hold Vulkan and 5 pyroclasts, and allow them to scout into the enemy lines. In turn one you will flame something dead, and turn two Vulkan will be beating things to death. It is stupidly high risk, but you will have a slightly larger army to support it. Could be worth a try...
