Skitarii as allies: questions and tactics

Recommended Posts

Greetings servants of the machine god!

I'm looking at the idea of adding a small contingent of the red planet's finest to support a drop pod marine list and I have questions!

1) since their is no HQ choice, you can't take Skitarii as "allies" right? You have to take a separate detachment?

2) As a separate detachment, do they still get access to the extra rules like preferred enemy and doctrina imperatives?

3) Do rangers and vanguard get ObSec? I can't tell.

4) How effective are 10 man ranger squads without special weapons? Vanguard? Is the omnispex a mandatory upgrade?

5) Has anyone had luck hiding rangers in a bastion or bunker and sniping all game?

1) That's correct.

2) Yes, they do.

3) Depends on the Detachment rules. If you're just taking the Skitarii Maniple, then no they don't.

4) Not bad. Although if you're taking a unit without special weapons, I'd probably go Vanguard.

5) Not per se, but I have hidden them in ruins for a couple of games and they worked out okay, but it doesn't take many turns for an opponent to realise that they're not *too* threatening.

Thanks for the feedback. I was originally thinking of having the AM elements hold a fortification as support, so I was looking for ranged firepower.
