Tekman
So this has been a long time in the brewing considering I'm a low tier poster here on the B&C. But seeing as I've started building and painting things other then black and white it might be time to update on the other side of the board as well rather then bugging my brothers with my 'inferior chapters' and heretical creations. That said I still have a picture of the first monstrosities I've ever crafted so lets skip and hop down memory lane first. http://i.imgur.com/Xl90k.jpg http://i.imgur.com/weCHf.jpg Now it's been years since then and the stuff has developed and an actual codex was picked 6 months after I started, coincidentally was this the first HQ I was proud of and actually felt like keeping. I'm even now still considering touching him up or flat out redoing him, but nostalgia is a strong wench so he endures. http://i.imgur.com/jE47d.jpg Skip ahead to me joining the B&C a few years back and we're now capable of using more then 3 colors on a model and maybe a wash here or there. http://i.imgur.com/ay6iO.jpg Not too long after that I learned about Forge World and it's nice additions to kits and outright gorgeous units, coincidentally this pushed me into buying my first airbrush a simple no tank model with a double action brush. http://i.imgur.com/CYzPmUi.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ymYukph.jpg http://i.imgur.com/UAdhDCZ.jpg This all then led to my first participation to the ETL and coming out as that years champion by sheer volume of models and points. http://i.imgur.com/Ekk5IvL.jpg http://i.imgur.com/WtfJf8A.jpg http://i.imgur.com/elPshDq.jpg http://i.imgur.com/wDDaQJc.jpg http://i.imgur.com/yGmEikh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/O96EcG4.jpg It was also there that I realized (when moving into my own apartment) that I may have a small addiction... or simply too much money if there is such a thing. http://i.imgur.com/RTp2Uyb.jpg http://i.imgur.com/S74bJij.jpg http://i.imgur.com/0uK0t6K.jpg http://i.imgur.com/PjyIQ5M.jpg http://i.imgur.com/IexkCjI.jpg http://i.imgur.com/VN7fKSM.jpg http://i.imgur.com/tD7C63q.jpg http://i.imgur.com/9e4bXf5.jpg http://i.imgur.com/7jbwqPS.jpg http://i.imgur.com/cerRyQu.jpg http://i.imgur.com/F5oQThE.jpg http://i.imgur.com/02gsm7C.jpg http://i.imgur.com/F7ZaEyp.jpg http://i.imgur.com/WYePjVw.jpg Then the yellow fever hit, I wanted to start Horus Heresy and had already a few models, but I didn't want to ruin my pretty resin crack so we experimented on 'leftovers' http://i.imgur.com/Au2TBlr.jpg http://i.imgur.com/o9GEWEZ.jpg http://i.imgur.com/0uKRCk0.jpg http://i.imgur.com/fOvUMiq.jpg http://i.imgur.com/jnMnzVK.jpg Then I went to Warhammer world when I visited my long time Tau and heretical friend and of course a tool of an employee wanted to see my Warhound and scratched the paintjob. So back to the paint cannon we went and Voom (yes that is it's name) came out slightly neater with new (and more) experience. http://i.imgur.com/AkctRwi.jpg So then of course there had to be another painting competition before this years ETL and as per decree we had accepted any challenge no matter the odds... http://i.imgur.com/DURomSL.jpg http://i.imgur.com/bDUEawr.jpg http://i.imgur.com/XDtswCQ.jpg http://i.imgur.com/fwv5UJP.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/LLZyzXq.jpg http://i.imgur.com/g8R8OF2.jpg http://i.imgur.com/OuKyH4q.jpg?1 However painting peace is a fickle thing and never lasts long, with the coming of the ETL I drew my brush once more. http://i.imgur.com/5r8axhG.jpg http://i.imgur.com/nUmQoPZ.jpg http://i.imgur.com/t1X2FnR.jpg http://i.imgur.com/TN94drY.jpg http://i.imgur.com/vgkGeFO.jpg http://i.imgur.com/XdOeslH.jpg http://i.imgur.com/9Rqf72j.jpg http://i.imgur.com/05RK1Ab.jpg Then of course the annual crash and rollbacks mid ETL had to happen for a machine spirit without tradition or sense thereof is an abomination which must be purged. http://i.imgur.com/akvUGvJ.jpg Now there's an entire army of Templars left at 60 odd bodies with a depleting supply of paint and coffee with the older models already petitioning to be redone. http://i.imgur.com/BdlXntI.jpg A half finished Grey knight army which I need a month of peace for. http://i.imgur.com/DmHXWrp.jpg A heresy which must be stopped before the traitors can reach Terra (or before my wallet sees any more characters it wants like Sigismund and Dorn). http://i.imgur.com/vCITm4v.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/311844-when-a-good-brush-goes-to-war/ Share on other sites
Tekman
And my latest work a bloke with a shield, a walloping fist and a angry yet sunny deposition. http://i.imgur.com/19lmDW7.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/ED6e6qN.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/v8DrT6z.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/RoLLEFy.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/JRmGPRL.jpg But not far off there is a machine of god like proportions and half of last months payslip... soon, when the Emperor of man sees fit to deliver it from the clutches of the evil postmasters. Throne knows I need to launch a crusade against those heretics one day. C.C. is more then welcome but don't bite my head of (or try not to at least cause I taste like coffee). Side note: formatting on here is the worst thing I've ever botched up. I assume there is a picture limit seeing as it stopped accepting [ img ] tags. Firepower
It's interesting to see the actual progression of your skills crammed (rather messily) into one page. There's a very clear progression in a lot of areas, like hiding the brushstrokes on your white tank panels, for instance. You've really spread your wings over time. I wonder how many of these models I've already nitpicked... Anyway, on to current events. Firstly, respect for tackling yellow. And you've gotten something of a handle on it in your latest stuff. You get a smooth finish on places like Polux's chest, without the thicker mess you were starting out with. The gold is prtty solid, too. Where you continue to struggle is smooth coats around contoured and bumpy areas where the brush can't go from end to end in a single smooth stroke, yes? Like the studded shoulder pads, or the cramped spaces of the backpack? Actually, looking at it again, the chest seems to be the only pristine spot, which torpedoes the last guess because there are much smoother, easier spots to paint than that. Sooo...what am I missing? Tekman
I like my space cramped and shoved together Chaplain, could do worse, granted half way in it went poop. Years of finesse in the way of Yellow is whats missing, that and the (I guess) urge to now over do certain bits... Give me 50+ more models and I'll have it nailed down! Firepower
Ha. I was just lost as to why it went from pristine to muddied...or 'poop' in some places. For those cramped spaces, if you've got the patience, you can thin the paints until they will go on as sort of a 'shell' rather than in strokes. It takes some extra layers because you're putting down even less pigment, but there's no way to get a smoother coat. You'd have to use flow-aid of one form or another though, because the surface tension created by simply adding water doesn't do the job. But I've only ever used it on somewhat large surfaces like shoulders, so particularly small nook and cranny painting in tighter places like backpack ridges probably aren't suitable. If I get your meaning, you'll be receiving an airbrush soon? You may be able to give oil washes a try. They can work wonders for yellow. Yeah but it's currently held by DHL, they accidentally shipped it to the other side of the country, I blame the ruinous powers. Tekman
And so the legs are mostly done, still playing with the idea of adding dirt, grime and other titan footsteppy goodness. http://i.imgur.com/DidTwSk.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/KM9Wl8O.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/0EqMsrF.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/90jHtGY.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/xwZ4rPw.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/wTXysZZ.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/311844-when-a-good-brush-goes-to-war/#findComment-4168050 Share on other sites
Tekman
We walk as of this morning, now to nitpick my own work for months and to make small alterations to the paintjob. C&C is welcome as long as you leave my butt at least to some degree intact. http://i.imgur.com/OMPPjNk.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/LcWA1dn.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/bPWO83Y.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/Ef8adVU.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/311844-when-a-good-brush-goes-to-war/#findComment-4170479 Share on other sites
Argent aquila
What a monstrosity, the yellow looks great with the weathering and the weapons glow is spot on.
