Feeling a need to get some fresh inspiration for my writing - can anyone recommend me a good book or two involving war and specifically warrior societies? I've found some samurai novels by David Kirk which look promising, but otherwise I don't have much to hand.

As a writer of ancient Terra said "a mind needs books as much as a sword needs a maintenance servitor if it is to keep its edge."

Typically I go with biographies with People like "Mad" Jack Churchill or Teddy Roosevelt and his four sons. It's not the best for prose but great for Character development. Also historical texts on Native American warrior cultures might be good, things like Pontiac's revolt or the Iroquois warlords versus The Three Fires. And obviously Geronimo, Sitting Bull, etcetera could be good as three of our legions are Native based (Iron Bears, Ghost Walkers, Fire Keepers).

One of the issues I have personally is finding something comparable to Astartes and Primarchs, so I just go with the classical Nord and Greek mythos. My only other suggestion might be the Dresden Files because as the books go on it deals more and more traditional combat with the supernatural, and clever uses of arcana that can be applicable to 40k.

I'd definitely recommend the Black Company by Glen Cook, the Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson, and the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. They're all Fantasy stories but with a large element of military campaigns and wars and stuff. They haven't necessarily got "warrior societies", but I found them really enjoyable, and they break away quite well from classical fantasy tropes.

If you need cc porn i recommend david gemmell. Imho the best if it comes to dirty sword/axe or whatever weappn you wanna crush your enemy-fights.

He has fantasy and historical as well es hostorical fantasy novels.

There exist warrior lodges (the immortals) mighty Heroes. Daemons etc. Strategos.

Well a lot to take inspiration from. (Arngrim Valten is heavily inspred by Druss the Legend)

That sounds fun, but what I really need is some prose with more flavour than your typical BL fare. And even with the good stuff, I can only lean so heavily on Abnett, ADB and Wraight. Edited by bluntblade

Well...I've read a ton of fantasy and scifi books but nearly entirely stuff like Dune, Star Wars, Warhammer, some german fantasy writers and the like. The Halo novels have some cool military stuff going on, mostly about small teams completing nearly impossible tasks but Halo: The Flood is about Halo 1 with additional characters of the UNSC and a couple of battles between them and the covenant. Only because of that I've read it two or three times.

Despite all of them, there was but one book I've read several times which has nothing to do with a franchise: Invasion by Eric L. Harry

It's about a third world war when China attacked nearly everything: Europe, conquered Australia, invaded America and so on. A lot of different characters and roles from the president to his daughter, a spec ops, a Chinese hero and so on. While America is distracting the Chinese invaders until the finished their newest super carriers, the Chinese try to conquer as much as possible to prevent their finishing.

Enjoyed it quite a lot.

Don't know if that helps you. If you got questions, just ask. :smile.:

I like that screaming skull :D

Screaming Skulls should definitely be a warband post-Insurrection. I've got an overall image of Raktra now and I like how gritty his look it.

Thx. Not the easiest to envision a whole figure with only description s and one iconostasis^^.The Raktra we see here is already a bit corrupted as it is the time of the bloodcrusade. I think earlier in the great crusade he will be a bit less gritty. The plan is to scan that mkdel and reduce grittiness to create later a Great Crusade Variant. Let's see where this is going^^

Especially as the screaming skull is enslaved with chains^^.

And now: Big things are coming.^^

So today marks the start of a new era, I just did the base of a shoulder pad (doesn't sound like much after typing it actually xD) , but it means process has started! Will post a few normal wip treads soon, I'll be back at sculpting soon too! (Green stuff brick coming soon)

Btw, how far is the first book? Isvthe text finished already? And how are the pictures etc going? Just asking for a look at what we are standing at. I might have found a place where we can have the books printed at an okay price, would be cool as a collectors piece, seeing as we all put lots of effort in.
