Ultramarines or Sons of Horus?

I really like the SoH upgrade helmets on the left in that picture, but I will give you the other ones could be better.

As for the Ultra Invictarii, they look absolutely terrible.

The sculpting on the feathered decorations looks like something a hobbyist would do for a conversion and not something a professional would turn in. The Praetorian set is a little bit better, but the chests look like Iron Hands rejects that had an Ultra icon slapped on it, and the heads, again, look like something a hobbyist would do - the lines look uneven and asymmetrical, and the bare head looks like an angry Cabbage Patch doll.

At first I hated the invictarii but after seeing one painted they do look really good. There is one up on battle bunnies (on my phone can't post them)

As for the praetor chests looking like iron hands, that does make sense. I mean guilliman created the fuhlementrus termies by improving upon the iron hands Termies so it's very possible he improved upon standard armor too. The praetor helms are lovely

And the invictarii chests are ace

Lets not forget these:

Most of the legion specific head sets feel like knock-off studio sculpted their design

I actually like those DG helmets. The one in the middle on the bottom row is awful, but the rest are fine imho. They're inspired by previous Heresy art.

As was the praetor...well the helms at least.

But yes those death guard helms are nice.

I really like the Death Guard helms, and that's not just me being biased. The Iron Warrior helms are garbage, the Iron Hands... well, anything is ace. Alpha Legion are really nice, Emperor's Children suck, Night Lords helms are nice but torsos are crap, Raven Guard are half-arsed, Salamanders are pretty good, World Eaters are really nice, as are Imperial Fists. Word Bearers are kinda half hearted, White Scars are great, and Ultramarines are hit or miss (mainly miss). Sons of Horus are really nice, I think most of it is the angle in which the photos were taken.

Agreed. They make Luna Wolves transfers and brass icons. You can still use the kits, but I'd sprinkle the Sons of Horus stuff out a bit... they'd wear more generic armour.

do you know if the Luna wolves used reavers?

They did (Catulan Reavers). The Reavers were an evolution of Despoiler/Assault squads as the Legion became more and more Cthonic-influenced, it stands to reason for there to have been a number of these formations in the Luna Wolves but it was when they became the Sons of Horus & over the heresy that the Reavers became far more common.

@DuskRaider, it wasn't Hastur Sejanus, it was Kalus Ekaddon.

On topic, I dislike the Ultramarine model range so I'd go with Sons of Horus.

Ok so maybe with a bit of converting the SoH reavers could make for some good Luna wolves reavers. Justarian are obviously a must and from the cover of false gods, perhaps the world earer helms could give some flavour to standard troops

The only thing I can say is, if you do play Luna Wolves, Mk. IV is pretty much out of the question. I don't think it was in production prior to Ullanor, so you're looking at mostly Mk. II & Mk. III. Although, it's your army so yeah, do what you want.

Interesting... the site seems to be largely recasts, which... ehhh... but this is sorta interesting.

Each legion can be as personalised as you like. A quick flick through Collected Visions shows that the Luna Wolves had variations on armour. They also would have made heavy use of the standard imperial designs, so plumes, ptegues, laurals, and, as Cthonia was found early, used the eye of Horus, and serpant insignia.

I don't think people should get pigion holed into a certain look for each legion. This isnt 40k chapters of 1000 marines. The smallest legion had aprox 70,000 men, recruited from different cultures on Terra, the primarchs planet or system, and from the galaxy at large. They would use insignia, armour styles, and weapons that may differ from a brother marine recruited from somewhere else.

I mean the Praetor helm is iconic to the Ultramarines, but there are pics of Raven Guard wearing them in CV, the Blopd Angles have similar looking helms, so do the Thousand Sons on some pics.

I'm planing to do Death Guard using their kit, Iron Hands torsos and helms, Iron Warrior helms, Alpha Legion helms, I could go on. Don't read Ultramairne upgrade as the be all and end off of kits for that legion.

I'd actually like to know what the OP wants out of a Legion Army. Saying "I want Dreads and a Spartan" is pretty broad and sweeping and doesnt really help pin down any specific thing he would be looking for in an Army since the vast majority of the 30k Armies I see has one or both.

More info on what he would like to play would be nice.

Infantry Heavy? Tank Heavy? AirCav? Drop Pod? Foot Sloggers? Mech Infantry? Angels Wrath (JP, Jetbikes, etc)?

Gotta be a bit more specific to see which would correspond more to your taste.

Well Spural said he typically uses foot sloggers....

Well, that usually means using multiple Tac Squads to fill out troops which immediately favors the choice of Ultramarines mainly due to Interlocking Tactics.

Tac Blobs, imo, dont really fit with the SoH if you're trying to make the most out of their bonuses. It can work, as with every legion but, you wont be getting the most out of them.

Also, by Footslogging does he mean: Infantry > Tanks/Aircraft for support units?
