What do you take with the War Convocation?

Recommended Posts

The War Convocation - we all know it, we all love it.

If you play with a War Convocation, how do you configure it? On top of all the cool synergies, buffs and free stuff, I would suggest it is one of the more tricky formations to use, as taking it dictates aaaaalmost the entire composition of your army. Almost but not quite. The War Convocation comes to between 1405 points if you take:

- 5 Vanguard

- 5 Rangers

- 5 Ruststalkers

- 5 Infiltrators

- 1 Dragoon

- 1 Onager

- Tech Priest

- 3 Destroyers x 2

- Knight Errant

This is about the bare minimum for a War Convocation. While I typically play 2000pt games with my gaming group, I know a lot of people play 1850.

What I am curious about is what other units do you use to fill out your lists? I of course have heard of allying with Flesh Tearers for Drop Pods, but what I'm really interested in discussing is what other combinations of Cult Mechanicus/Skitarii units people have had success with? Kastelans? More Grav Destroyers? Another Knight?

I had been running the Drop Pod list (as I had Blood Angels before Mech) but I've been messing with a couple different options.  So far, my favorite seems to be to add the following:

Coteaz with some acolytes

2x Dragoons with snipers

Knight Crusader (not the Errant)

Imperial Bunker with Void Shield and escape hatch (lots of fun and options)

I'm also bumping the grav destroyers to 4 and running plasma destroyers for the other and 7 vanguard @ 1850pts.  Plan is to add more rustalkers when I get the models instead of the extra vanguard.

Dragons with snipers seems super inconsistent to rely on to do anything.

I thought the same at first but running 2 of them you get 4 really good sniper shots who have often been one of the most valuable units on the table for me.  Taking down a LOT of annoying things (including a Wraithknight - rolled 3 6's!).

I have been looking at a second Onager too

Rolling 3 sixes out of four dice (after having to hit) doesn't seem a good basis for a strategy. Even preferred enemy from the formation doesn't make the odds great. I just run two ballistari so I don't have to use an Icarus array on the Onagers.

I like what you guys are thinking! Especially the second Onager - but my meta isn't very flyer-heavy so I can likely skate by on just the one for now.

I've been taking 3 Dragoons, instead of a Ballistari (or two). While it is more points for 3 of them (instead of just one to get by the requirements of the Battle Maniple), I don't feel they're a waste. I take them with Lances and when they actually get a charge off on an enemy unit with all 3, I have had great success with them. I've perhaps been getting a little lucky in terms of being able to get Stealth/Shrouded up to keep them alive in time, or keeping them lurking around a flank, because they'll go down if your opponent wants them gone. The sheer number of hits the Taser Lances can cause has been staggering, and at S8, everyone needs to fear that.

I also take a Crusader, with Thermal Cannon, Avenger Boltcannon and Stormspear. I know there's a great deal of debate when it comes to Rapid-fire Battlecannon vs Thermal Cannon, but I find myself doing okay in the AP3 department and would prefer the scary vehicle-melting power of the Thermal.

I also take 2 Kastelans/Datasmith, but while I love the models, I am not sold on how effective they've been. They're durable, sure, and can fight half-decently in Assault, but they're so many points and are so slow. I think I may try and keep them near my Crusader and use them as counter-assault to make up for the lack of D on the Knight.

Also, one big deficiency I've noted with the War Convocation: the 2 squads of Skitarii infantry, without a transport, die in seconds. I don't think I've had them survive the third turn in any of the games I've played with them.

My onagers don't go after flyers, they sport Neutron lasers and cognis manipulators, and go after knights and vehicles and anything big and scary.

My Knight of choice is the Warden. Neither the battle cannon nor thermal cannon are particularly impressive given the other ranged options you have, and when a Knight has access to doctrines and protocols, those 12 shots become unerringly accurate.

I had some good traction with a War Convocation + an Assassin, but for an upcoming tournament I'll be using it in 3k along with a Dark Angels CAD and an Allied Space Marine detachment.

For the + Assassin version I took the following:

10x Vanguard, 3x Plasma, Conversion Field + Pater Radium

10x Ranges, 3x Arc Rifle, Conversion Field + Skull of Elder Tesla

5x Ruststalkers, stock + Conversion field, Omniscient Mask

5x Infiltrators, Tesla/Flechette, Conversion field, Phosphenix

3x Dragoons, 3x Phosor serpentia, 3x Jezzails

1x Dunecrawler, Icarus Array, all the upgrades

1x Knight Paladin, Icarus Cannon

1x Dominus, Autocades of whoziwhatsit

3x Kata Destroyers, 2x Grav, 1x Plasma, 1x Flamer

3x Kata Destroyers, 2x Grav, 1x Plasma, 1x Flamer

1x Vindicare Assassin

I was able to kill a Bio-Titan(put 7 wounds on in the first round of shooting @.@), killed 2/3 of a Dark Eldar army, and snagged first blood/slay the warlord off of Fateweaver (albeit I also Seized the Initiative on him so the Turkey of Change was still on the ground).

For the 3k list I plan on taking the same configuration with the following changes:

-2 Dragoons

+1 Dunecrawler

Swap to the Stormspear Rocket pod and add a Melta gun for the Knight

(Dark Angels)

Librarian, ML 2

Ezekiel

10x Scouts

10x Scouts

Drop Pod

Drop Pod

Drop Pod

(Allied: Chapter Tactics Ultramarines)

Chapter Master, Artificer armor, Thunder hammer, Shield Eternal

5x Scout, Camo cloaks, Snipers

5x Sternguard, 4x Combi Melta, 1x Heavy Flamer, DROP POD

Drop Pod

3x Centurion Devastators, Grav, Omni-scope

That's 5 Drop pods, 2 with Destroyers, 1 with Vanguard, 1 with Sternguard and 1 with Centurions + Chapter Master, for 3 of various kinds on turn 1. This list could be pared down to 2k by dropping the Dark Angels and other extras

If you want allies, look no further than the Flesh Tearers Strike Force. A few Pods never hurt (you).

Personally, I would not though, but whatever floats your boats. As for the Convocation, you need to decide whether you go ranged focused and skip points on the melee units, or if you go melee foruces and spend less on ranged ones. By spending I mean unit size, choice between different Knights or Kataphrons.
