Gigahorse - Necromunda Style

After I saw Mad Max Fury Road, I decided I just had to build a variation of the gigahorse for necromunda (for those who haven’t seen fury road or don’t know which car I am referring to, this is it: http://i.imgur.com/4TNxOIX.jpg). The first thing I did was find two 1:43 scale 1959 Cadillac Coup De Villes. Unfortunately for me, the only ones I could find in that scale all had metal bodies, which is going to make things difficult later on:

Next, I bought a Hot Wheels monster truck to get some front wheels for my gigahorse:

Then I bought a 1:43 scale monster truck to get some back wheels (the engine and radiator from this are also going to come in handy):

Once I got the cadillacs, I drilled through the rivets holding the chassis on so I could see what I would be working with, then I sat the wheels under one of the caddy bodies to see if the angle was going to look ok:

I ran into a bit of a problem with photobucket last night. I was going to upload some new pics for this thread, but when I tried to upload the pics into the album I have just for them, it would only let me select my main album. I thought ok, no big, I'll just upload the pic then move it to the correct album...only nothing happens when I try that. So until this gets sorted out, I can't do any new pics.

Now  that photobucket is working again I can contine with my progress. I bought a second 1:43 monster truck and took the engine from that, which with the engine from the first monster truck, gives me the two engines I need. I also got a 1:24 scale transmission to go with them:

I figured the radiators would come in handy as well:

In addition to this, I kept the shocks from one of the monster trucks:

I also got a couple of heavy stubbers (in lieu of the spear guns the original gigahorse has):

The next thing I need to do is build a chassis. While I was looking for pics of the gigahorse online, I found a webpage that will help me immensely with this project: http://www.thecredits.org/2015/05/heres-how-they-built-the-beastly-machines-for-mad-max-fury-road/

My plan is to build a copy of the gigahorse’s chassis out of strips of balsa wood. Pics of that once I finish putting it together.

Here’s the chassis for my gigahorse:

For the back wheels I used a model car axle:

I couldn’t resist mocking up the vehicle at this point (I used a wooden dowel for the front axle):

Then I started cutting apart the Cadillac bodies with the use of hacksaw…

…as well as mark where I need to trim the tab on the windshield:

I've painted the chassis since my last post, as well as painted the front end of the cadillac (still needs that grill add on tho):

http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/Soulcrusher6669/Necromunda%20Gigahorse/Necro%20Gigahorse%200026.jpg

While i was at it, I cobbled together some pieces to connect the engines to the transmission:

http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/Soulcrusher6669/Necromunda%20Gigahorse/Necro%20Gigahorse%200027.jpg

Once I got the engines and transmission installed I was able to connect the drive shaft to the rear axle:

http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/Soulcrusher6669/Necromunda%20Gigahorse/Necro%20Gigahorse%200028.jpg

http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/Soulcrusher6669/Necromunda%20Gigahorse/Necro%20Gigahorse%200029.jpg

I figured the transmission ought to have some kind of framework to keep it from falling out whistlingW.gif so I started on that as well:

http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/Soulcrusher6669/Necromunda%20Gigahorse/Necro%20Gigahorse%200031.jpg

The cadillac bodies are now closer to being ready:

http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/Soulcrusher6669/Necromunda%20Gigahorse/Necro%20Gigahorse%200030.jpg

And here's the gigahorse as it stands now (I added a wooden dowl to the caddy body for this pic so that it would sit correctly on the frame):

http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/Soulcrusher6669/Necromunda%20Gigahorse/Necro%20Gigahorse%200032.jpg

Now comes the hard part...the top caddy body needs to be narrower than the bottom caddy body so that it will fit between the bottom caddy's fins. After taking some measurments, I now know that the roof/windows need to be 1/4" narrower. The easy way would be to just take the 1/4" out of the middle and then glue the halves back together, but that will leave a seam running through the windshield (which the real gigahorse doesn't have). Looks like I need to do some figuring...

I asked my brother, who builds lots of model cars with chopped and sectioned roofs and whatnot, and his suggestion was to get some clear sheet styrene to make a new windshield out of 'cause he knows of no way to section an existing one and put it back together seamlessly.

That is a good point (it also solves the problem of the windshield wipers), though I'm not sure how well I'll be able to duplicate the round edges on the sides of the windshield; I guess I'll have to experiment. On a positive note, now that Fury Road is out on dvd I now have all sorts of refferance to use thumbsup.gif

What if you go ahead and section the original windshield to the size it needs to be, then use it as a form to make the new one out of clear sheet styrene? Lay the clear sheet over the original and heat it with a blowdryer or something until it conforms to the shape under it? OR, should  you know someone with a vacuum former...

Thinking about it, I NEED to make that rolling guitar rig. Ill even mount some small PC speakers on it and stick my old MP3 player inside. Any Idea what vehicle they used for it?

Go to the Vehicle Showcase; after you select the "Enter Showcase" icon, select the "View All" icon that appears on the upper-left corner, and then the vehicle on the lower-right corner. The website describes the "Doof Wagon" as a "repurposed M.A.N. 8x8 missile-carrier," likely a Rheinmetall MAN SX or HX. If you cannot find a scale model of the Rheinmetall MAN SX or HX, the MAN TGS will probably do.

I finally got a copy of necromunda magazine #4 today, so I figured up a profile for the gigahorse:

VEHICLE NAME  - Gigahorse

VEHICLE TYPE - Wheeled

TRANSPORT CAPACITY - Five

FIXED WEAPONS - 2X Heavy Stubber

ARMOR TYPE - Armored

COST - 200 + 120 + 120 = 440 credits

SCORES / ARMOR / AREA NAME

      1        /       9        /      Driver

      2        /       9        / Fixed Weapon

      3        /       9        /       Crew

      4        /       9        /      Wheel

      5        /      11       / Vehicle Body

      6        /      11       /      Engine

I was reading through the vehicle rules just before I made this post, and noticed a small detail that I overlooked...according to the rules, vehicles can only have one fixed weapon, so I can't have two heavy stubbers like I planned. The one bit of good news is that it'll be easier to stick just one gunner in the back.

I've finally started removing the windows from the caddys. I took out the rear window of the bottom caddy body (I don't yet know if I'll need to remove the trunk area of the bottom caddy body so I left that part alone):

http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/Soulcrusher6669/Necromunda%20Gigahorse/Necro%20Gigahorse%200036.jpg

The upper caddy body has undergone a more drastic transformation; I removed both the front and rear windows, as well as the trunk area (I still need to sand down the bits of the trunk next to the fins). I also marked out the section of the roof I'll need to remove:

http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/Soulcrusher6669/Necromunda%20Gigahorse/Necro%20Gigahorse%200037.jpg

As always questions and comments welcome.

You can have one fixed weapon per arc... kinda annoying, as otherwise you could have a 12-3 90degree arc and a 9-12 90 degree arc, but I suspect the exact wording required the arc be 'front', 'left' and 'right' rather than any 90 degree clock face...

You could however have a linked heavy stubber? I think that's a thing for any weapon, or was it just basic weapons that could be linked?

Looking really good though, loving the progress :)
