40k Terrain - Laser Etched Wood

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this idea is apples to oranges. Our little hobby group is looking to get some terrain together, and we started looking into MPF as an option that would look better than our little cardboard ruins. It suddenly dawned on me that one of my co-workers has started his own little laser engraving business. So far, he only really has templates for plaques, and he orders them through Laserbuzz.com (where you can see examples). So I've done some googling, and I found some tokens and terrain templates, but haven't really been able to find 40k themed templates for sale (or free!). Has anybody come across templates for this? Again, I don't know if the system is comparable like that.

Gap in the market?

I have seen peeps at my club use laser cut scenery for Infinity and thought it would be cool for 40k. But it's quite terrestrial and warehouse industry looking. Have you checked out the shelves of places like Weyland Games? I haven't.

Never heard of anybody selling templates for lasering.

If you account for the thickness of the material and add some pegs you could probably just trace old WD templates and Mordheim/Necromunda buildings though. There is quite a bit of that stuff floating around on the web. GW even released an entire book with cardboard buildings for Warhammer Fantasy at one time and you can find pdfs of almost all of those things.

Won't spare you the work of setting up the vector files, but at least you wouldn't have to come up with designs yourself. Should speed up the process somewhat.

The laser cutter should just use any vector image so you can use a programme like adobe illustrator to set out the patterns. Iirc red cuts and black etches so it depends on what part of the design is what colour as to how well it out.

I'll see if I can get hold of it and I'll try and knock up some little marker templates. What armies do you play?
