My First Warhound...

Recommended Posts

Yeah.... Maskol. You're probably never going to use it again after this try, because like every person ever to have used it, you realized it takes way more time to do well, than it is to just paint mask the whole section with tape, then spray the other bits, then remove tape and just paint the previously masked sections. ;)

At first I too was like NO PINS? But then I saw you clamp everything in the body section. It's fine to not use pins there, just really clamp the hell out of it.

Most of the serious structural joints have been glued with JB Weld 2 part epoxy. It's pretty robust (I may have inadvertently tested this by dropping it...)

I'm still in two minds with the Maskol. I do kinda like it, it means I can get a nice even spray finish everywhere which for a large war machine with large smooth panels I think is important. However I think it will have it's time and place and that a lot of the masking will still be done the old fashioned way. I think for the small intricate details then the Maskol will come in handy.

I'm currently trialling a piece that is predominantly masking tape for the bulk with Maskol to fill the to the edges of the detail. I suspect that will be the way I go in future.

Also, may I suggest breaking off the highest part of the rearmost ruin? It's too high for the titan to have stepped over it, yet it's right behind the titan - which makes for an awkward situation where when I look at the silhouette from the front, I wonder how the titan got there without having broken the top of that building off...

I know what you are saying about the ruins in the back drop. It's not technically 'correct' but I like silhouette.

Been doing a bit more spraying, I undercoated the whole of the body in one go by holding the body with a metal bar on the waist magnet allowing me to get it even all over.

I've also started getting some base colours down on the main panels. Used a white under coat under the yellow which has made the yellow a lot more vibrant.

The contrast between the blue and yellow is quite pleasing so far.

Going to get the rest of the yellow done next and then mask it up and touch up the gun metal base coat.

Contemplating some blue / yellow stripes on the right hand side rear 'shoulder' panel.

Hah it's not that flash, just one end of my work bench and a thick plastic sheet masking taped up!

The most important part is this:

3m organic vapour mask. £17.99 from screwfix. I wouldnt even think about spraying without one now. Normal dust masks don't do jack.

Just trying to decide whether to go yellow and blue stripes or white and blue stripes.

So yesterday I finally sat down and measured and cut to length all the pistons and hydraulic cylinders for the legs/feet.

There are far too many.

I wanted to spray them to get a matching and even colour to the legs.

I came up with the following:

After a base coat of primer, they have had a coat of platemail metal for the pistons which when dry will be masked off and then a coat of Gun metal for the hydraulic cylinders and mounts etc.

NOTE:

I'm glad I took this photo before spraying as obviously the numbering system for which piston is which is now obscured!

So I've done a bit more spraying,

The general base coat is down on the head, carapace and body etc.

I demo'd some stripes on the body as well, I think I like the width and alignment, however the masking was a bit poor so they will need a tidy up or redo if I have the time.

I also masked the plate mail pistons and got a couple if coats of gun metal on the hydraulic cylinders.

The wine in the background may have something to do with the poor masking of the stripes...

Just remember with weathering, putting on too much isn't a good idea. If you think there's not quite enough weathering, step back, leave it and come back to it with fresh eyes. Maybe it was enough after all. ;)

So got the rest of the base colour spraying done and the masking off. Finally was able to put it together quickly to check I was happy with the colour scheme (though it's a bit late now if not!).

Just need to do a bit of tidying up with the brush and then it's on to shade and detail. And the guns, I still need to paint the guns.

I have given myself a deadline if the end of September as I need to move rapidly on to the FW Realm of Battle and DA Lions Blade Demi Company which I need to get painted for jan/feb next year...
