Amayasu
Hi all, Hopefully a quick one. I don't currently use an airbrush, but I do want to start using thinned down oils for washing and pin-washing work. Can anyone recommend a good, brushable clear acrylic varnish that can be used to seal to mini before using oil and spirits? I really need it to dry without brush marks and streaks. Humbrol clear looks reasonable, but I didn't like their brush on matte varnish and so tend to avoid their products. Any recommendations? thanks! Father Mehman
Any gloss varnish will work but I use Krylon Spray Gloss Varnish. Have you tried using 'Ard Coat yet? For touching up on the spray varnish, I used it straight out of the pot and it took the oil wash very well. After that, as you've probably researched and/or tried before, it's a quick matte varnish spray and then highlights. In summation: try to get your hands on some spray gloss and matte varnish as they'll leave no brush strokes. Barring that, try using 'Ard Coat for the gloss sealant. I wouldn't give you the advice if I hadn't already tried it on my beloved Death Guard. Hope that helps ! Amayasu
on my beloved Death Guard. This is exactly what i'm working on. I put together a test model and bought some clear acrylic spray varnish from Halfords and it was just awful; everything turned yellow. It was closer to an imperial fist than Death Guard! The potential yellowing is the bit that has been scaring me off sprays. Thanks for the advice, i'll take a look Krylon and gladly take first-hand advice. Father Mehman
Yellow ? I've heard dodgy things about some of the varnishes but never thought...well, he shall be missed. If you can't get a hold of Krylon then try Rust-Oleum. Anything that says "UV Protection/Resistant" and, now that I think about it, some of the cans say that they will not yellow whites. I got mine at a craft store. Testor's Dull Cote I hear works well for a matte sealant but I'd just go for a can of the Krylon matte as it's usually cheaper. He's asking about preparing a surface for an oil wash. You need to use a gloss varnish for that. JeffTibbetts
This is going to sound crazy, but trust me: try to find some Future floor polish (marketed as Kleer in the UK). It's magic and it doesn't leave brush strokes. They've changed the formula recently, so it's getting harder to find. I ordered mine off Amazon. Amayasu
Thanks for the suggestions folks. @Jeff It seems Klear is now a thing of the past in the UK and very expensive on places like eBay, but apparently "Pledge Klear Multi-surface Wax" is the same stuff with an updated formula. Visually the liquid looks a lot like Ardcoat or other varnishes. The "Wax" in the name is misleading. It's cheap, so may as well pick up a bottle from the local supermarket and try it out. Razblood
I have some of the pledge stuff and from what I can tell it does exactly the same as future, though it smells godawful  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/312598-brush-on-clear-cote-to-prepare-for-oil-work-recommended/#findComment-4151715 Share on other sites
