MORE THAN ONE WEAPON
Unless otherwise stated, if a model has more than one shooting
weapon, he must choose which one to shoot - he cannot fire
both in the same Shooting phase. If a model has more than
one Melee weapon, he must choose which one to attack with
when he comes to strike blows - he cannot mix and match the
abilities of several different Melee weapons. However, it's worth
remembering that if a model has two or more Melee weapons he
gains +1 attack in close combat (pg 49).

Sorry to necro, but the Red Book no longer includes the "he cannot mix and match the abilities of several different Melee weapons"  part.

It reads: If a model has more than one Melee weapon, he must choose which one to attack with when he comes to strike blows."

Do we think this change is functional, made specifically to allow weapons like the charnabal saber to offer benefit as an offhand weapon?  Or were they trying to reduce word count, but with the intent of preventing an off-hand saber from improving the Initiative of, say, a Paragon Blade or Power Sword?

I’d assume it’s not a functional change.

The charnabal sabre gives the initiative bonus in a challenge to “the user of this weapon” - maybe if it said “the owning model” he wouldn’t have to actually use it.

I kind of agree, actually.

I think the intent is that "choosing/selecting a weapon" as described in the shooting phase matters.  You're only actually the "user" of a weapon if you selected it to make your attack.  There's also wording in the Weapon Type section that would imply that the special rules don't trigger at all unless you're "Using" the weapon, not just when you have it equipped.
