ChaosRising
Let me preface this by saying that I have never played a game of 30k before, although I would very much like to.... Not too long ago I started to collect a Khorne Daemonkin army. So far it has won both of its engagements, though not by much. The first encounter was against a Guard player with lots of vehicles (an Executioner, three Basilisks, a Leman Russ with Knight Commander Pask riding inside, a Chimaera APC....you get the idea). The second engagement was against a single, giant mob of Orks (literally about 115 models). So...after facing the IG, I decided that some anti vehicle tanks might be in order. After facing the Orks, I considered adding anti-infantry tanks (or at least, a lot more shooty units) to my army. From there, my mind immediately went to Iron Warriors. And from, after much planning, deliberating, and forum watching, I came here. I have a multifaceted challenge regarding the parent Legion from which I want to build a task force (roughly a Crusade-era company in size when complete). Elements I am accounting for are 1) Timeline - force in question must be playable (to a remotely believable degree) in both 30k and 40k using a single set of models (meaning I shouldn't have to have 2 sets of Word Bearers) 2) Allegiance - force in question must be traitor/renegade/chaos aligned (or plausibly explainable as such) in the 40k timeline, in order to explain why it's assisting a contingent of World Eaters and (possibly) some Khorne daemons. Slightly less necessary, but highly desirable, would be if the force in question could be believably played as a 40k loyalist force (loyalist successor chapter or maybe part of a loyalist 1st founding legion) 3) Battlefield Role - the force in question should, at the very least, provide a supporting role to the Khorne Daemonkin. For all purposes have a shooting phase of 8 bolt pistols, a pintle-mounted combi-bolter (think storm bolter) and a havoc launcher. 4) History - Last but certainly not least, I'm tossing ideas around in my head as to how I'm going to marry the concept of 30k gear lasting into M41 on a semi-large scale. My instinct (regardless of parent legion) is to go with some variation of the the force in question was formed as an advanced recon force during the Great Crusade (well before they were reunited with the Primarch) and so were given an adequate mix of wargear to be self sufficient and were thereafter "lost" from the sequence of events. So far I have come up with four possible Legions to use as support roles 1. World Eaters - for one thing, they form the basis of my post-heresy warband, so there may be a bit less time-traveling stuff involved with the time line aspect. 2. Iron Warriors - because...they're the Iron Warriors. You call them in when you need to shoot stuff, kind of like you call Ghost Busters when you have a paranormal problem. Interestingly, however, I keep wanting to make a tactically flexible IW force, on the grounds that it has been separated from its brethren and forced to adapt to the realities of having no supply line, 100 odd marines, and is still expected to carry on the Crusade. I envision it being something like this 1st Triad 20 Tactical marines w/ bolters 10 tactical marines - normally armed w/ bolters, but will equip as Breachers as needed 5-man Recon squad 2nd Triad 20 Tactical marines w/ bolters 10 Tactical marines w/ bolters - will be equipped as Assault marines as mission requires Jetbike squadron 3rd Triad 10 Tactical Marines 20 Tactical Marines - will be equiped as Heavy Weapon teams as needed Heavy bolter teams, quad gun teams 3. Imperial Fists - I have these in mind for many of the same reasons as the Iron Warriors - they have (had) a penchant for tanks, are tactically flexible post heresy and are clearly loyal. With a little creativity, I'm sure I can find a way for a band of them to wind up supporting a World Eaters warband. 4. Night Lords - they haven't changed much in 10+ millenia (luckily for me). Their main downside for my purposes (aside from some relatively intricate armor - compared to the first three) is that they are more akin to the World Eaters than Imperial Fists or Iron Warriors, which means that I don't see the NL as a particularly shooty partner in the Warp. I could probably work out a way to explain how they came to be loyalists (or something akin to it) but it would be a stretch. Given that there are few Legion-specific units (at least that I’d be looking at), I felt that it might be worthwhile to get some advice from those who know a thing or two about the workings of the Heresy era and pre-Heresy era. Again…my concern is not so much the timeline of the Crusade and/or the Heresy, but how the pre-Codex units will work with post-Codex units. So, with that said, let me thank you in advance. depthcharge12
Take Zardu Layak and his blade slaves or Gal Vorbak, that way you can bring in more daemons or pick along the malefic tree :) I recommend taking World Eater allies if you chose that route, they are the Coolest Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/313026-a-task-force-for-all-occasions/#findComment-4158979 Share on other sites
helterskelter
Loyal night Lords isn't really too much too explain. They'd rather follow the galaxies greatest murderer (how much slaughter in the name of the emperor?) Than the increasingly more insane papa curze. Heck on libby got recruited to malcadors lot because sevatar kicked him out. It's 30k nearly any reason can be valid. And I plan to make my NL a bit more shooty. Explosions are scary too Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/313026-a-task-force-for-all-occasions/#findComment-4159098 Share on other sites
