Polishing off the models, where to go from here.

Recommended Posts

Hello Brothers,

I will write a more in depth introduction/piece of fluff once I've figured that out myself.

However, before I do that I would like your professional opinions. I've been collecting 40K as well as fantasy for a number of years. Though I never really played many games until about a year ago, fantasy that is. The change of rules really put me off so I started rummaging around and found my old 40k models, it was like Christmas! Now, I know the Guard, err Astrailitarum aren't usually the ones for speed and mobility, or are they?., but I was looking to you folk for help.

The models I currently have are:

x45 Lasgun toting Guardsmen (roughly)

x4 Sergeant

x4 Gernade launchers

x2 Flamers

x9 Vox Casters (I thought it looked cool I guess)

x9 Kaskrin stormtroopers

x1 Commisar

x1 Sentinel

x1 Leman Russ Demolisher

x1 Basilisk

So, essentially my question is where do I go from here? In terms of purchasing models. Ideally I would prefer a more mobile play style. Perhaps se vets in chimeras? Deep striking scions? Though tanks are awesome, is it viable to run a mix of things?

I was contemplating getting the Box set but wasn't sure if I could maybe invest the $200 on the models I need. Suggestions?

I'll also be getting the new codex soon I think I'm order to flesh a few things out myself. Just thought I'd briefly introduce myself to the forum!

Thank you in advance, brothers. I look forward to what you've got to say as well as contributing more to the forum!

If I was you, I would look at picking up a few Chimeras.  This article was pretty useful for me when I started playing:

http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2014/10/40k-tactics-astra-militarum-chimera.html

Right now I have 2 built Chimera, I want to pick up a few more.

If you don't care about snap shooting, you can get huge mobility from a vet squad in Chimera.

I like to spill my guys where they are needed, then later use the empty Chimera to grab an objective.

I also have a lot of vox troops (bought a lot of IG second hand).  Rather than cutting them off, I am just running one vox guy per squad (I rarely purchase a vox).  It just like the look of a squad with sgt, vox, and troops.

*edit* I just re-read your inventory.  Try to pickup 3-6 melta guardsment, possibly 3 or 6 plasma guardsmen too.

The old metal Catachan Melta/Plasma troops come up for fairly cheap on ebay now and then if you don't mind the old models.

Welcome to the B&C Talarian :D Guard can be quite mobile these days if you want to be, either mechanising heavily with Chimeras or taking to the skies in Valkyries :) So in that regard some Chimeras would be a great start along with some more troopers to go in them. Would you be looking at a Platoon list for more troops or going Veteran? Vets do well mechanised with their BS4 and three special weapons but you can do a mix. Platoons give you ready access to smaller squads if you want to make use of the Vendetta's six model transport too.

The box sets GW does would be a great addition to your force, giving you more infantry and another Russ and you can save even more money by purchasing from an online reseller :) A single Sentinel isn't much to write home about, so adding another one or two would be another option. What special weapons do your Kasrkin have? If it's some plasma or melta they could do nicely deep striking in for mischief.

While our codex may only be a solid mid-tier one it has many options for how you can play which is brilliant. Infantry, mech, artillery, tank (we have a tank commander HQ option!) or a hybrid we can do it all :D I very much look forward to your contributions too, starting with some pictures of your Guard I hope ;)

Thank you for the replies gentlemen!

And eventually WarriorFish, it would be a tad bit emebrassing positng them in their current state. My 12 year old self didn't care much for painting/detail must admit!

In due time they will no doubt be displayed, as well as bat reps etc. of which I played a tau player last week with my guard and some space marine allies which made for an interesting game!

I just picked up the codex about an hour ago so will be looking at that a bit more.

Chimeras and special weapons seemed like the obvious first choice, and more tanks, of course.

The meta at my local club isn't too competitive but I've only started playing there 2 weeks ago.

My troops have 0 special weapons bar the flamed and grenade launchers unfortunately, I have a few bits of plasma and melts laying around from space marines I believe, so that can help.

I think I'll simply do more playtesting with proxies and get a feel for what I'd prefer.

Aye, a single sentinel won't do too well I'd imagine. Has anyone had any good results running 2-3?

I posted a picture of my ancient Leman Russ I did when I was 8, so you've no excuses msn-wink.gif Give the codex a good read, after the rule book it should be your first port of call should you have spare time and fancy some reading - knowledge is power! Flamers and grenade launchers are cheap but useful, excellent choices for Platoon units I find so the plasma and melta will probably find use on Vet squads and Company Command Squads for the most part thanks to BS4. So keep that in mind should you want to do something a little special for your Vet squads smile.png

I almost always run my Sentinels as pairs - ideally in different squadrons if you can spare the Fast Attack slots but they're one of the better vehicles to squadron if you must. Keeps them cheaper but still effective, two is my maximum for squadrons but being smaller Sentinels are fine to take up to three if you want more. Cheap upgrades are best usually, Scout Sentinels can excel outflanking and striking side/rear armour and back field elements - don't forget they're fairly capable in combat against the right opponent too, and sometimes stopping an enemy unit from shooting is more useful than the Sentinel shooting!

Armoured Sentinels are good additions to heavily mechanised lists, matching a Chimera's armour they can advance with them providing some mobile heavy weaponry and can charge in to keep enemy units occupied in a pinch too. They likely won't kill much but AV12 can trouble a fair few foes and buy your Chimera/troops time to do their work. When it comes to mechanisation all or nothing is my mantra, so load up on vehicles and force your opponent to play your game thumbsup.gif

My friend let me proxy flamers as melta/plasma until I got the bits I needed.  I just painted a line of color at the tip of the flamer and let him know green stripe was melta, etc.

Thanks again for the replies. Ha! I took a gander and it still looks a lot better than mine ;). None the less I'll post a few pictures when time permits as well as a few colour schemes I'm testing.

Much reading and painting has yet to be done!

And I think I'll be doing that as well, painting the Flamers and GL differently in order to field them!
