The Hawkshrouds of Boar's Rock - A Knight Titan Project log

Sir Trystyn has to be my favourite pose of any Knight that I've seen so far on this board.

'Yes, I'm just casually going to walk right up to you and then kick your arse. Know the worst bit? You can't stop me.'

Thank you both. That's highly praise indeed :-) I am very pleased with how Trystyn came together. I wanted to make him running, to capture the reckless nature of his character, he's a young knight on his first campaign, but no matter how I posed the legs, it just didn't work, it ended up looking silly rather than scary, like he was tripping over something. I think this pose holds a nice lumbering menace.

I got some work on the white armour last night, I'll do some more tonight and try to get some picks up.

I've made some small progress with the project.

http://imgur.com/526Bazk.jpg

My original plan was essentially to batch paint all of them, but when I looked at all that white I had a change of heart. The thought of having so many plates all 'not finished' was a little depressing! So I decided it would be better to have some plates complete.

So that's the White and Red done on the face plates...

And the hoods. I need to do the metallics next.

(Edit: for some reason the forum keeps changing my code into links... Ah!!! Fixed it!

I've no clue on how to remedy your photo situation, I'm electronically illiterate.

But your knights...just wow....your process is great, the colors classy! the fluff writing has a great noble feel to it and your process is very thorough. Great work here! I'm currently in the process of painting & building my first knight so this is a major help.

Thanks man. Glad you like them. I fixed the problem, the link wasn't registering them as .Jpg, yay computers!

Some more progress finally after lacking motivation for a while.

Awesome job, man!

I figured out that I like the Knights more than I first thought. ^^

So keep up the good work.

I also enjoyed your fluff. It's like the cherry on the icing on the cake. ;)

Thank you both, I'm glad people are enjoying my work!

@Kelborn, I'm really enjoying the fluff bits, it's a lot of fun writing dialog in a Shakespearean style.

I made some more progress last night, and tackled the chest plates and shoulder mount cowling, have a look.

Pretty pleased with how the red an white work together on the first one, that's for Sir Baldwyn, ho will have a portion of his armour painted red in honour of his House Catharus heritage.

My plan is to tackle the carapace shell next as that'll make the torsos complete. I'm going to be juggling the existing shells around slightly, so Lord Robear's shell and personal heraldry will move to Sir Tristyn, due to a slight fluff clarification that I need to implement in order to make the personal heraldry work.

That will follow soon though.

Thank you both. :-)

The white is such a pain to paint! Haha, I've done most of the white on the carapace now, though it needs tidying up still. I took a break to do a little on my Iron Wariors, but I had time to put some more fluff together for Sir Trystyn.

Sir Trystyn:

The import placed upon oaths, and the keeping thereof by the nobles of the Knightworld Krastelan has been well documented in my previous works, therefore I shall not belabour the point further here. Suffice to say, that throughout the recorded history of the noble houses of that planet, a rash promise or thoughtless remark has led to more than one young knight being bound to a course of action that they had not considered in the heat of the moment. No scion of the great houses of Krastelan would consider breaking an oath, for to do so would make a man less than nothing in the eyes of his peers, thus they often speak formally and with great care to avoid such occurrences.

'What is said cannot be unsaid' is a cautionary axiom often used to impress upon the children of house Catharus the importance of guarding one’s tongue. It is little surprise therefore that when Sir Trystyn, the young grandson of Barron Edwyrd swore a binding oath of service to the VII Legion Astartes after the opening stages of the Drummond conflict, that shockwaves were sent through the entire household. Up to that point, no member of house Hawkshroud had ever been Oathsworn to another body so frivolously, and no member of house Catharus had ever engaged in such a practice in their long history.

The Drummond conflict was the young Trystyn Hawkshroud’s first action, having come of age only the year before, it had taken time to find a mount the young knight would accept, Trystyn had flown through his right of becoming and bonded seamlessly with his Throne Mechanicum. However, any suit he tried was beset by errors and quirks, which impeded his ability, stopping the full joining of Knight, throne and mount into a single entity. In his early years Trystyn was a sweet boy who, it was felt by his mother and sisters was not suited to war. Lord Robear however, insisted that both of his sons undergo the right of becoming as he had waited many years for a second son to be born and endured what he often referred to as a ‘Plague of Daughters’ while his wife Myldreth bore him girl after girl, seven in total before Trystyn’s birth. Lord Robear had been overjoyed when he learned of the birth of his second son, but felt that growing up around so many women had left the boy soft and was eager to remove him from their influence. His inability to find a suitable mount for his son vexed Lord Robear sorely as he could not send Trystyn into the stars in a mount that was not fully synchronised, for to do so was certain to cause his son an ignominious death. Seeing his son’s desperation, Barron Edwyrd sought assistance from his brother Arthire, the now Viscount of house Hawkshroud, who arrived shortly after at Boar’s Rock with a gift for his Great Nephew.

Ire Aeternae, is an ancient suit of Errant armour, with a machine spirit as belligerent as the bludgeoning fist of its left hand and a battle lust as hot as the thermal cannon of its right. Barron Edwyrd had remembered the suit from his youth as it had not accepted a rider in over four hundred years, he could not escape the thought that a Knight that would accept no mount and a mount that would accept no rider, may have been simply waiting for each other.

When Trystyn entered Ire Aeternae, nothing happened for long moments, as the Knight and suit communed through Trystyn’s throne. Finally the ancient war machine came to life with an exultant blast of its war klaxons and stepped forward out of its restraints. There was much rejoicing at the young Trystyn coming to his majority, but the boy was forever changed by his binding with Ire Aeternae. Gone was the quiet, sweet boy, all softness burned away by the touch of the fiery machine spirit. Where he had once been considered and gentle, he was now rash and forceful much to the horror of his mother, who had dearly loved her sweet boy. However there was no denying his ability as Trystyn was something of a marvel to behold in the field, besting knights of far greater experience than he with his impetuous charges. This rashness however, is what ultimately led him to making the ill-conceived promise of allegiance to the warriors of the VII Legion.

I'll post up some more of young Sir Trysten's folly later.

I made some good progress on the carapaces in the last couple of days. Though I realise that I've forgotten to to take progress pics of the white/red, but I'm sure you can imagine what it looks like! ;-) anyway, here's what I've been doing.

Metal all based:

Shaded:

Highlighted:

And the shell all cleaned up:

This morning I also added the decals to the carapace. I got a good tip recently, if you're planning on weathering your minis, you can all the decals at this stage, before you finish the edging/detailing and you can sponge chip without having to be too careful about accidentally getting paint on the wrong bits.

That's where I'm at anyway. I'm gonna weather the carapace next then paint the gold trim and do the rivets.

Dam, I can't believe I missed this thread. Wow, that's an excellent force of Knights you have there. Love the different posing of all the Knights, I'll have to try it with mine.

And I thought I was being mad, letting my Acheron stamp on a plastic dread, you've gone and done it to resin!!!

Bonkers or genius....

Edit* I realised I did see this thread, and it was the inspiration to stomp dread :) was convinced it was a ceratus because the posing was so very very good. Thanks for the idea!

@Col.hertford Its not as bonkers as it seems, the unfortunate Emperor's Child has been scavenged together from several different peoples bitz boxes so it hasn't cost me anything! :-) it only has one arm and if you look you can see he doesn't even have knee pads! But I'm glad to have inspired anyway. That's always nice to hear. The re-positioning of the plastic kit is a little fiddly in places but not too difficult. Well worth a try if you are gonna have more than one standard Knight.

Small update tonight:

I got the weathering done on the carapaces tonight. They look okay I think, I'm not entirely sure yet, I think it'll need to come together before I make my mind up. This is the first time I've used his technique on something so big.

I'll get the gold trim done next and ten I recon its Basing time.

Bit more progress made in the last day or so, I'm nearly done with the carapaces which is good as that's the most onerous part. I remember when I did my first Knight thinking that the carapace was a bit of a slog, so doing three at the same time has been a real labour. I'm almost done now with only the rivets to paint and I've learned a bit in the process which is good. Adding the decals and weathering as I've gone had been a bit of a game changer for me! :-)

Anyway, the gold trim is now done:

And I painted the windows in the top as well, here's the process I use:

Base: Astonomicon Grey.

http://imgur.com/uxdFRma.jpg

First highlight: 70-30 Astronomicon Grey & Ceramite White.

http://imgur.com/XlGZlF8.jpg

Second highlight: 50-50 Astonomicon Grey & Ceramite White.

http://imgur.com/nLn5e5m.jpg

Third highlight: 30-70 Astonomicon Grey & Ceramite White.

http://imgur.com/ogELgzd.jpg

Final highlight & detail: pure Ceramite White.

http://imgur.com/mkZJWLO.jpg

That's were I'm at currently, hopefully get some hobby time in tonight in which case I'll tackle the rivets and that's the carapaces done. Ill leave you with another montage pic of the four knights together, as I thinks it's a nice way to show them off.

Oh wow. These look amazing together, but more importantly I want to say you did a fantastic job on the leg reposing. What did you use for the ball joint at the ankles? I used plastic beads on my own, but yours look different.

The subtle repositioning breathes a lot of life into these, as you have so many together. Really impressive work, and the paint looks excellent to boot!
