My First Blood Angel

Hi guys,

I've recently finished off my first Blood Angel model and I was looking for some feedback as to what everyone thought of it:

I didn't want to go down the traditional GW route of it being very bright, and have instead opted for a darker, muted tone.  This is also my first time painting red, painting black without using black, and my first stab at OSL.

Any comments, good or bad, are very welcome.

Thanks

Thanks for the responses.

I really like the jewels!

I think you might need some work on your shading but overall its not a bad model at all!

Also, welcome to the B&C!

Do you think I need to make the darker areas darker?  I'm not fully sure what you mean.

I would thin your layers. And afterwards wash the figur to tone it down. But nice modell for the start. Couldn't habe done it better

I found that either the layer was too thick or too thin.  I am working on this to create a gradual blend.  Would you recommend washing the whole figure with a single wash (such as black) or each coloured area differently?

Thanks

Well all red with the same was because it would look strange. Other colors with a different wash. Or use army ainter strong tone on the whole figure. Than do the highlights. You could work with glazes too. Apply them at last and go from light too dark. Wash from dark to light

actually a great first BA! so well done.

red, is actually a very easy color to pull off well.

if you like youtube, check warhammertv. they have a great tutorial painting Blood Angels the GW way. it's fast, it's easy, and it looks damn good on the table.

I like what you attempted with the Power Sword, that is so effective, and if you perfect it, it will look amazing on the table as well

good job, keep painting.  we'll be watching.

Thanks MikhalLeNoir. I'll try adding some washes to him and see how it turns out. I did do some glazes using the basecoat colour but maybe it wasn't enough.

Thanks for the kind words Bloodbath. As I mentioned I didn't want a bright Blood Angel so I haven't looked at how to paint them the GW way. I've got a painting dvd by dark sword which I used for the reds.

So last night I added a couple of washes to each of the coloured areas to help to blend the highlights into the shading, as well as increasing the depth of the shading.

I'm happy with the result. The layers appear blended together much better. I'm not so keen on how they've dulled the model a bit. I may try to bring a bit of brightness back to some areas.

You may also notice the top piece has changed. My son some how managed to reach the top shelf and get hold of him. It could have been worse. Luckily he was wearing terminator armour :p

Now you could Highlight him or in Order to lighten him up drybrush him with lighter Tones of red. Drybrushing is always Great to achieve a more battleworn Look in my opinion and you could Glaze him afterwards so it Blends the colors better.

MikhalLeNoir, Thanks for the advice yet again. I don't really want to drybrush him so instead I settled for some small highlights and a Glaze to lift him up a bit. Drybrushing does make them look much more battle worn and I'm currently using that on my guard (still need to take photos and upload on here).

This is the final chappie. I did have to edit the photo a bit to brighten it up. It's night time here and he was either too bright with a flash or too dark without:

Bloodbath, Thanks a lot for your kind words. I wasn't thinking along the lines of John Blanche but I'll definitely take that compliment!

Expect more posts as and when more of the angels get some loveing. It maybe a little while!
