Starting the hobby as Imperial Fists

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I am brand new in this hobby. After much reading, I want to start the Imperial Fists army. I did some searching and found some nice recipes for the yellow armour. But I have completely no idea what paints to use for other things, like green eyes, red or black weapons, red aquila, shoulder pads and other details. What would be the basic starter set of paints for such general things to achieve a good look? I know I need a Chaos Black or equivalent spray for undercoat, and the paints to use for the armour, and that's it :P

Thanks in advance :)

If you're brand new to the hobby, black undercoat for a yellow paint scheme will drive you mad trying to cover it cleanly. I'm working on a Lamenters army for my Badab project, and I use white primer as the undercoat and Army Painter's Daemonic Yellow spray for the base coat. Much simpler, in all honesty.

For green lenses, I would start with Caliban Green, followed by Warpstone Glow and then Moot Green. White dot in the high corner.

For reds, I would start with Mephiston Red and highlight with Wild Rider Red

For black, I would use Abaddon Black highlighted with Skaven Dinge and then washed with Nuln Oil.

I know it will be hard, but I prefer the darker, more gritty shade of yellow. I don't like the bright yellows I very often see. I want something like this:

But these guides require mixing of paints, and with my little experience it would be impossible to achieve consistent results. But I plan on using black as undercoat and using Yriel Yellow, Averland Sunset, and Tau Light Ochre.

Thank You for the other suggestions. I'll probably drop the moot green as I'm sure I wont be yet able to do such intricate details on eyes.

Thanks!

EDIT: Found the perfect (I think) guide for me - http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/184230-quick-and-simple-imperial-fists/ - love the dark shade.

A relatively easy way to achieve a solid yellow which you can then darken down later on is to prime/basecoat white pick out the details with Seraphim Sepia (if going for lighter), Agrax Earthshade (if going darker) then to slap on 2-3 layers of Lamenters Yellow Glaze onto it.

If it too bright for you at that stage, you can then go over the whole thing in a relatively light coat of Seraphim Speia again.

I actually have a bunch of different yellow schemes -- mostly since I always Wing It when painting my fists and can snap some pictures of the different ones if you want, when I get home; some of them border on Orange because of my Cassandora Yellow being Schitzhophrenic on how much pigment It decides to give me sometimes :p

My current go-to scheme is:

-Prime Black

-Averland Sunset to a solid coat

-wash in Agrax/seraphim/cassandora depending on mood :p

-2+ coats of Yirel Yellow

-Wash in Cassandora Yellow, Agrax/Seraphim into recesses once dry. This step can be replaced by a glaze of lamenters yellow instead.

Would You be kind enough to provide the picture of how this recipe looks in reality?

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/184230-quick-and-simple-imperial-fists/ I am absolutely in love in how this looks, and it seems easy to paint. I've found the names of the paints in new paint ranges, so I would get Yriel Yellow anyway and Flash Gitz Yellow for hightlights, and Rakarth Flesh for covering the undercoat.

I have some crappy phone pics here on the multiple different ways I've painted Yellow so far:

Of these, The Tartaros Terminators are the ones that use the White Primer and Lamenters Yellow Glaze method without further darkening down.

Everything else uses the Go-To scheme detailed in my last post; the only variation being Swapping Yirel Yellow for Flash Gitz and some other minor variations.
