Starting 30k for sure, question about books though?

I know the black books have lots of fluff and stuff but just getting into the game The red books are cheaper and I'm just looking for the rules. Is that what I need? What exactly are the red books, like what is in them? I'm sorry I just don't understand the description on forgeworld, and I want to make sure I get what I need before I buy. I was going to get the two pack ph34r.png

THE HORUS HERESY LEGION ASTARTES GAMERS COLLECTION

^^^ That right there for $76 USD seems like a good deal and I'll slowly buy the black books because I love fluff. I'm on the 20th Horus heresy book in the series i think right now and I love it. biggrin.png

Thank you guys so much for your help.biggrin.png

The Red Books are basically like a Codex (without much fluff - only unit descriptions) - they have the basic army list and basic legion specific rules and characters

the big books feature campaigns, fluff for the legions, solar auxilia, cultists, PDF, knights army, some additional rules for your legion army, ...

hope that helps^^

That set you're looking at has the Crusade army list book, which is the Legion army list, and the Isstvan campaign legions book, which is the rules, characters and units for the Sons of Horus, Death Guard, Emperors Children, World Eaters, Iron Hands, Night Lords, Salamanders, Word Bearers, Imperial Fists, Alpha Legion, Iron Warriors and Raven Guard. Basically all the rules you'll need if you're playing one of those legions. But they don't have any fluff (except the little snippets for each unit/character) or the campaigns or art, which are in the big black books.

Those two books are all you need to play, if you're playing one of those twelve legions.

Oh, and welcome to the heresy train!

so yay, basically, for the start (and for playing imo) the red books are the best way - but you will need some of the black books to get the "full fun"

what legion do you want to start?

Book IV* has some additional units (i think ohmy.png not sure on this atm^^) and Legion relics

Book V* has also some new units (the Stormbird f.e.)

You mean IV and V Atia?

You'd need book V for now if you were going to do Ultramarines, they aren't in the red book, and book VI coming at some point soon should have the basic rules for the Blood Angels, White Scars and Dark Angels. The big black books are definitely worth the money, especially if you're a fluff bunny, but yeah the red books are the easiest way to start unless you have no interest in gaming.

oh god yeah ...

see ...

that's what you get if you can see the future >.>^^

Looking at The World eaters mostly that's what I want to do the red butchers, rampagers, Khârn, angron, and all the things I know so far appeal to me as my first choice I also love the Color scheme I would add some more gold in it and maybe some black. I would do like a siege assault army.

As a second choice Sons of Horus.

I really want to do a "bad" legion because I have blood angels for 40k. So I want to do something opposite.

well, than the red books are the way to go^^

(and if you need the rules for something not in the red books before you can affort the black books .... there are always ways to help tongue.png)

for WE's, the first three books should feature everythink you like - colour schemes (book I and II), and for the fluff istvaan and the hunt for corax (book III) - but they have more or less 0 iconography atm, mind that (also, from BL, in case you haven't read it yet, Betrayer!)

for SoH, the first two books aswell as Conquest - book I and II for basic colour schemes, book IV for iconography, shoulder pads, more fluff post istvaan (and from BL, in case you haven't read it yet, Vengeful Spirit^^)

EDIT:

oh oh oh, and i would wait for transfers :P afaik the older legions *should* get new transfer sheets too^^ (= more iconography for your dudes!)

I will have to do that... I really want an all assaulting army with some crazy melee 30 man tactical squads in spartans with melee weapons then typhon siege tanks some diemos vindicators, executioner preds, lots of contemptors, deredeos, and butchers.

I might pick up tacticals from GW to save money so I can get the 1st Black book, or get more tanks and contemptors.

if you want plastics to save money - wait for the plastic HH set :O

Just remember that regardless of which books you buy (the original full fluff books more so than the new red crusade books), they do have a lot of 'errata' to the rules that you should be well aware of to familiarise yourself with.  So I'd definitely recommend asking questions and putting up army lists in the forum to see if you might have missed a ruling.  A good one that catches a lot of people out is the Support Officer rule and which HQ options can't be your compulsory HQ.

I'd also recommend Battlescribe if you like that sort of app.  Whilst it might allow you to do the odd thing that isn't within the rules, it does help keep you within most guidelines for 'legal list' making.

I'm about to download battlescribe right now! I've never heard of it before
