dakkamasta
Hi guys, I've been looking into how to get some more air support into my BA force (I currently only have 1 stormraven) and I've been reading up on the Stormwing formation which has really caught my eye. I really like the idea of 3 flyers showing up at the same time to put a lot of pressure on the enemy, even if they don't show up turn 2 they'll still make a big impact whichever turn they arrive. Also I think it's fluffy as hell for a BA army to have 3 flyers show up to rain glorious death from the skies! As for loadouts I've been leaning towards flexibility and points efficiency so I'd probably run the raven with TLMM/TLAC and the talon with the skyhammer missiles since they synergise well with the assault cannon and also keep them cheap. I know people like putting lascannons or typhoon missile launchers on them but I just don't like the idea of an AV 11 flyer with 2 HP carrying around such an expensive weapon, that job can be better done by the stormraven. I also like that this formation allows me to bring 3 flyers whilst still freeing up my fast attack and heavy support slots, which is great since I frequently bring baal predators, vindicators, and am currently in the process of getting a Sicaran. So what are your thoughts fellow sons of Sanguinius? Has anyone got any experience using this formation and how effective would you rate it? I would love to hear some outside opinions. Venemox
I built a Stormwing formation (after building a solo Stormraven, also) and I love it. It does eat up quite a few points, but certainly packs a punch. With some reserve manipulation, having them show up at the right time can be better assured. Remember, even though they have to come onto the table in proximity, they do NOT have to stay that way. Also, with the new version of Battle Brothers rules, the Stormraven CAN carry a BA squad and/or Dreadnought. sebs_evo7
I have a friend who runs this formation, its quite powerful because you have to dedicate fire towards it if you want to destroy it but its also hard to ignore because it can dish out a fair few shots. I run a BA painted talon with skyhammer missiles and its so cheap and I find its always fun to use and can do work against flyers or ground targets Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314230-stormwing-formation-opinions/#findComment-4182629 Share on other sites
Charlo
Deffo a great formation and an easy way for us to take talons. I'd recommend it. If not you could always use the 3 Stormraven formation to get 3 flyers ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314230-stormwing-formation-opinions/#findComment-4182657 Share on other sites
Lucien Eilam
Remember, even though they have to come onto the table in proximity, they do NOT have to stay that way. They don't have to do that at all. Escort Craft was removed in the new codex. Quixus
[Nitpick]Escort Craft is still present but it only makes all three flyers arrive at the same time.[/Nitpick] Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314230-stormwing-formation-opinions/#findComment-4182680 Share on other sites

dakkamasta
Thanks for the input guys, I was pretty sold on getting the stormtalons for it and now im even happier with the choice given what you guys have said. As for the 3 raven formation, I find it to be a bit cheesy (I only play with friends, no tournaments), and I also dont like having to bring 3 tac squads since I prefer my jumpy dudes. Lucumon
Ss for the 3 raven formation, I find it to be a bit cheesy (I only play with friends, no tournaments) Except it's not cheesy. It's a terrible tournament formation unless you want to play 2,500+ pts. At 1850, you can get a dreadnought (our best CC dread... yet still worse than the base C:SM one), a 5 man DC squad, and a 5 man ASM squad. All your points are tied up in a formation you think is going to give you the ultimate alphastrike... and then it disappoints. That's what I get for not reading th new SM formations with the correct amount of due dilliginece. Thanks for the tip! I still don't really like it since its too many eggs in one basket and makes the playstyle of the army very one dimensional, it would get very boring really fast. Charlo
If you're in a ridiculous sized game you take that formation, Dante and then just leagues of jump troops via formations. D6 scatter with the ability to assault. Good bye world.
