Which Legion/Aspect of A Legion Needs More Attention?

Recommended Posts

So, I see a consistent theme among discussions in the Age of Darkness forum when it comes to particular legions. Everyone highlights different aspects of their favorite legion (or in some cases, least favorite legion) as needing more attention. People talk about the Dusk Raiders, the Emperor's Children's characteristics as loyalists, and numerous other legion specific elements that for whatever reason, neither the Black Library or Forge World have explored in depth. So I would ask my fellow members of the Age of Darkness: what pieces of the lore need more attention? If Black Library announced they had made a book about X theme from the legion background, what would make it an auto-purchase?

A comprehensive guide to the Alpha Legion ;)

Only half serious, it would be nice to get a little bit more inside view into them.

I'd like some nice fluff on how each Legion interacts with Mechanicum allies with some particular mentions of certain units of fame amongst them. Especially if it was set out like the pictures in the HH books of Marines with thier wargear.

I'd like a comprehensive visual armoury of the Primarchs too. All thier weapons, armour, gadgets etc

That'd be great, but Guillamon's wall display alone would fill a small novel in its own. Other Primarchs, probably not so much.

What I would like to see further explored would be if and how any members/significant numbers from the Traitor Legions turn Loyalist, or vice versa. Now, we have legionaries like Dantioch who essentially immediately reject turning traitor, but what about those who start having second thoughts halfway through the Heresy?

One other thing I'd like to see covered would be what happened to the other 4 Traitor Legions representatives on Terra. I'm assuming Fel Zharost may have been one of them, but that still leaves 3 more.

This is my own wish-listing but it'd be great if the traitor Death Guard ever received a novel/novella from a legionary's perspective, written semi-sympathetically. Some bits on how the legionaries justify to themselves that what they're doing is right, show the creeping influence of the lodges and how it's changing the legion even before their "big" change. Throw in a little bit of self-doubt, that none of the legionaries can actually show in the open, due to Mortarion's paranoid influence making his Chaplains into his "secret police"/eyes and ears (which is a neat idea from the short Distant Echoes of Old Night, which I consider otherwise pretty bad).

Maybe some flashbacks to life on Barbarus post-Mortarion, exploring a bit of the Legion's homeworld culture, even just a little. The Legion cultures thread put the XIVth's lack of character or little cultural habits into pretty harsh light.

Also, at some point if the Solar Auxilia showed up in a story or two that'd be cool. It'd be great to hear more from the human perspective, fighting against and alongside the Legions at the forefront. The next time we revisit the Sons of Horus in a story, a Cthonian head-hunter character would rock socks.

Oh, and when the World Eaters show up in red I guess. Which is probably pretty soon post-Betrayer?

The Lion and his head for tactics/strategy which the HH books seem to ignore.

The D.A and there "Wings" and how that plays into there secret's.

Terran and caliban marines did they ever serve alongside each other.

The earliest history of the 1st Legion "We where the emperor Praetorians". Merir Astelan.

White scars some hint's at what there flaw might be dose it have anything to do with the terran born great khan and the 1 in 200 males having his gene.

Blood angel's Jet bike squads are they as odd as there combat bike brethren.

Just Death Guard in general. Their portrayal in the novels have been very much the background guys, via the perspective of a Loyalist, or mustache twirling villain. This especially goes for how stupid and one dimensional they made Mortarion... there was a huge potential to play on his feelings via Scars, but since did a complete reversal and has since turned into a generic boring villain. Ho hum.

I would argue Mortarion got an extremely fair shake in Scars, but I agree about the Death Guard in general.

All good answers guys. Keep 'em coming!

Mortarion was great in Scars and they could have played off of his unease with Horus & Co., the idea that he was thinking of turning on the Warmaster, and he was second guessing his alliance... not to go back to the Emperor, but certainly not staying with Horus either.

None of them. Why? Because it's up to us, the individual, to fill the blanks with our imagination, then bring those crazy thoughts to life.

FW gives us the perfect amount, enough to create a framework for anywhere our imagination takes us. :)

I would like to see more regarding Mortarion and the Death Guard. I think people embellish or mis-remember what was said in Scars, who said it and how it was said.

I personally found Mortarion's 'turn' in Daemonology to be a weak/disappointing explanation of his shift.

I'm also always after more Dark Angels. They are way more interesting in 30k than they ever could be in 40k.

If the Ultramarines could achieve anything for once, that would be nice. So far they have been punching bags and are being suspected of treason for their empire plotting (they are even doubted by the Emperor himself, ouch). Hopefully they will get a decent moment before the Scouring (which might not even be covered by the series at all).

Bitterness does not suit you, ancient brother. The XIII Legion are covered in glory, as they always have been. it simply isn't Guilliman's time yet, to show his true genius.

Patience, brother. Time is on your side.

Don't worry man, your legion comes out on top and goes on to sire 90% of the existing Space Marine chapters. Everyone else is ruined by the heresy lol.

The Ultramarines hold down the entire eastern border of a galactic empire, virtually on their own. They're that good and anyone that disputes it simply doesn't know what they're talking about.

But I agree with the others, their time to shine hasn't come yet. It will.

Do you guys think the Imperial Heralds need more attention at all? I'm personally interested in that period of the Word Bearer's history, but it always seems like a footnote in their turn to heresy.

Well, it's called the "Horus Heresy" series. More insights into the Great Crusade would have been nice (especially for the Ultramarines), but it is not what the series is about. Similarly, we may not actually get to see the scouring, and the series might end (in twenty years or so) with the Siege of the Imperial Palace.

On the other hand, BL is milking the Heresy series like there is no tomorrow, so they may decide to go further into the Scouring after all.

And don't get me started on the Calth desaster... *mumblegrumble*
