How to do straight SM legs

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I want to do a one-off project to challenge my painting skills. In my mind it is a "behind enemy lines" situation: a lone marine, no weapons, helmet busted, trying to make it back to a rendezvous point, etc.

I want to model him standing straight up as he is checking his auspex and weighing his options, rather than the default "ready for battle" stance (see below).

I have chopped up 3 sets of legs and can't get close to what I am picturing in my mind. Any suggestions/tips?

Check out a log by a user called Veteran Sergeant on this forum. Whilst he specialises in truescaling, he's achieved a number of poses that reflect a variety of different situations (crouching, kneeling, standing, etc). I believe he might even have a tutorial on his log too.

Thanks, Brother-Captain. I think I have seen that thread, but now I can't find it and there are several Veteran Sergeant's on the forums.

Any chance someone out there can link to the thread for me?

This link may help.  I also have an idea to throw out though. If you had some resin legs, with a bit of heat you should be able to position the legs more how you want. I want to say that I've also heard of it being done with plastic legs (possibly via Veteran Sergeants thread).

@geektom - Nice Skyline there and one dead marine.

I know you are going for the 'BAT 21' thing but walking up tall with nothing but a club is dumb, he would be moving from cover to cover!

I'd use the kneeling Space Marine Devastator Missile Launcher legs!

I don't get the BAT 21 reference, I will have to look it up. I hear what you are saying, but my idea is that I am capturing a very small moment in time; a brief respite in the wilderness, alone. The battles have already happened, the club is all he has left.

I didn't picture him standing on top of a ridge-line or anything, lol.

Here are some pics of close to the final position, I think:

What do you guys think? Tabard or no tabard? If I keep it, it will be roughed up and tattered quite a bit:

I think yes tabard, and yes to dirtying it up. And I dig the vignette pose. The more the merrier, in my opinion, as they can say a lot about who your chapter is. I love the fact that it looks like he just used whatever was to hand, beating orks with their own glyph-pole. Even better if you plan to make it dripping a bit of gore on the ground. :D

Thanks, Jeff. Yes, the plan is to push my painting skills a bit and try to really have him as featured piece, even away from the army.

So, he will be plenty grimy and gory.

Really? That's awesome! I can't wait to see what your scheme looks like, all messed up.
