Hey everyone,

I need your assistance, is there any information out there about Black Shields? I'm tempted about doing a small force of them but don't know exactly about how to go about them. I'm thinking a small combat patrol size of either iron warriors or alpha legion and would love to get more info before preceding. Thanks gals& guys!!!

What exactly are they? Are they like the Knights Errant, loyalists from the traitor legions?

kind off, but they have their own agenda^^ nothing to do with Malcador^^

Yeah, I meant to mention that. But they're that kind of idea? Loyalists from the traitors?

YAY!!!! Ideally the black shields are the Vengeful Sons. Out for blood kinda deal, that's all I got about them in 30k from the blurb where the picture is from. I was pretty sure they'd be in the shattered legions, Atia I think I had read it in one of your rumors section.

-That's why I was also asking about the Unification bolts :P

... Further to this, and perhaps an even more sinister enigma, are the persistent reports of Space Marine forces appearing bearing no sign or seal of heraldry or origin at all, or stranger yet, heraldry which bears no mark known during the Great Crusade. A handful of extant accounts, now sealed beyond all retrieval, make reference to a loosely-termed and non-formal class of warrior known as the "Blackshields". The majority of Blackshields appear to have been of the Legiones Astartes, though some may once have belonged to other factions. In some cases the term was a literal description, the warriors having obscured the livery of their parent Legion, painting some or all of their armour's panels black to hide all former associations. ...

Hmm... I guess I don't really pick up on the Alpha legion vibe from the description.

On a separate note does anyone have a good image of the Aquila with the thunderbolts on their shoulder pads?

No I meant like they turned and weren't happy with the whole heresy thing so they became black shields.

Black Shields are not an order, it is a title for one who once bore the colors of their Legion with pride, but now have turned on their old oaths and stripped the heraldry from their plate in either disgust or even punishment.

It is the closest we have to an under-class amongst the Legions; Brothers without a brotherhood. Outcasts. The lowest of the low. And in this essence, possibly the most devoted to their ideology.

Some fight alone. Some group together in loose, untrusted squads to raise Hell. Some loyal, some not. All that matters to them is that they stand for their beliefs, even if their defiance casts them as pariahs for all time.

Yes they will be in Book VI so in Amsterdam I talked to Andy Hoare about them. He said they come from Loyalist Legions and Traitor Legions alike. It is a collective term for all Astartes that didn't for either the Emprah nor Horus. The origin of the term "black shields" was already explained (stripped Legion colours etc.).

Obviously Andy and Alan both love them as they "invented" them back in the day when they both worked for FFG and had way more freedom.

While I like the A-Team idea behind that fluffwise, I am suspicious about them ruleswise. If black-shields and shattered legions have no restrictions and can cherrypick from the whole LACAL+special units from all legions that's all the cheesy excuse some people need.

I wouldn't worry, I'm sure there'll be drawbacks for using a Shattered Legion force, rather than just picking loads of benefits you want.
