Brother Heinrich
So in the unlikely event that I have the motivation and money to field a 3,000 point VIII Legion force, here is the list I came up with. Lemme know your thoughts:ROW: Pride of the LegionHQ:- Praetor - Artificer Armor, Jump Pack, Iron Halo, Melta Bombs, Void Shield Harness, Paragon Blade, Trophies of Judgement - 215ptsElites:- Contemptor Dreadnought - Chainfist, Kheres Assault Cannon, Drop Pod - 265ptsTroops:- 10x Legion Terminators - Sgt w/Chainglaive & Combi-Melta, 9x Combi-Weapons (50/50 split plasma and melta), 9x Powerfists - 440pts- 10x Legion Veterans - Sgt w/Chainglaive, Squad Meltabombs, 2x Plasmaguns, Rhino, Outlfank Tactic - 300pts- 10x Legion Veterans - Sgt w/Chainglaive, Squad Meltabombs, 2x Plasmaguns, Rhino, Outlfank Tactic - 300ptsFast Attack:- 3x Scimitar Jetbikes - Squad Meltabombs - 150pts- 10x Night Raptors - Sgt w/Chainglaive, 2x Pairs of LC - 300ptsHeavy Support:- Deathstorm Drop Pod - DP Assault, Krak Launchers - 145pts- Deathstorm Drop Pod - DP Assault, Krak Launchers - 145pts- Caestus Assault Ram - 305ptsLord of War:- Konrad Curze, Primarch of the VIII Legion - 435ptsTotal: 3,000ptsVets outflank, Terminators smash/kill armor and TEQs, Curze and Raptors run a murder train, and the Deathstorms, Jetbikes, and Contemptor provide distractions they can't ignore. helterskelter
Life is just a murder train a comin' Pretty solid and Curze gives you turn one shrouded so that's a nice cheeky bonus. Hopefully your void shield won't get popped early on coz as much of a distraction the other things are, you only need one lascannon followed by a typhon (reasonable assumption at 3k) and Curze has no friends left. But that's assuming people don't get scared by the gazillion other things that are aiming for the face Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314661-night-lords-3000-swishy-swooshy-we-comin-for-that-tushy/#findComment-4191883 Share on other sites
Brother Heinrich
Yeah I figured the void shield was just extra security, I did have digital weapons and a charnabal sabre of Hashec, but if figured keeping the mob o death alive took priority. Plus Curze will kill more than Hashec could ever hope to, so he can play second string to Papa Night lol. Flint13
Yeah, that looks hard as hell. Curze fits in spectacularly with Night Raptors since he can tank shots for them and grants a very nice cover bonus to the unit. So looking over it though, might the Praetor might be a better fit in the terminators? (I'm assuming they're going in the Caestus.) Reason being that Kurze and the Raptors + Praetor is a hella bit of overkill. The VSH is pretty easy to pop if its just out in the open, so its much more valuable to splash that first (and only) overwatch charging out of an armored vehicle. Equipped with Terminator armor and the VSH, your Praetor would be a good asset for the terminators and divide up killing power nicely. Like you said, Curze doesn't really need any help with his Raptor entourage and it would give you two super dangerous assault units causing hella-negative fear checks. Just a thought Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314661-night-lords-3000-swishy-swooshy-we-comin-for-that-tushy/#findComment-4191927 Share on other sites
Brother Heinrich
Good point flint, plus it gives me an excuse to make the Proto-Terminator version of Hashec that everyone has come to know and love :) Also what's the capacity on a Caestus? On my phone right now so I have no reference materials handy. Slips
Caestus is 10 Models either Bulky or Otherwise (does not affect Very Bulky or Extremely Bulky). Otherwise, Heed your Sis/Brosters of the VIII, they got a handle on it. Balthamal
Assuming this is a money no object kinda deal, I'd consider Terror Assault as well. Konrad elevates that from something that's good in the right hands to outright painful. The Night Fighting bonuses alone worth keeping an eye on. I'm liking that Terminator Claw - screams lethality to me. Only thing I'm wary of (having seen my Fire Raptor annihilated by Deredeos) is the delivery system with the Ram. It's a very risky tactic although to be fair you do have some very good threat saturation going on. Only alternative I'd consider, is kit the boys out in Cataphractii, give them a Primus Medicae and teleportation transponder and drop them in and watch your opponent :cuss theirself at seeing a block of midnight death landing somewhere nasty. Given that they're left panicing about that AND Curze, that's a whole lot of hurting about to get laid down. Alternatively if you're able to save a couple of points, go down the Spartan route and run Konrad with them too Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314661-night-lords-3000-swishy-swooshy-we-comin-for-that-tushy/#findComment-4192028 Share on other sites
Slips
Ill tell ya right now that having Deepstruck a unit of terminators with a primus and the IF shields for a 3++ didnt stop them from getting shot off the board by my Iron Hands opponent. If you can afford to give them a transport, do it. The Advantage of the Caestus is that its front av13 with a 5++ Otherwise, good points. Flint13
Yeah, if we're just theory-hammering, I think the Caestus is the better choice for keeping those terminators alive, especially with that Void Shield Harness. Even with Curze on the table they will catch every shot ever. Brother Heinrich
Yeah my thinking was essentially: 1) I don't want to tear apart my army or buy a bunch of extra stuff to make the Terror Assault ROW work. 2) I want a landraider-esque delivery system, however my whole force is outflanking, deep striking, or rocket-jumping across the board. 3) How do I get terminators right where my opponent doesn't want them and able to shoot and assault the turn they deploy. The answer was the Caestsus, since it's the closest thing we have to a flying land raider. So here's the list update: ROW: Pride of the Legion HQ: - Praetor - Cataphractii Armor, Paragon Blade, Trophies of Judgement, Void Shield Harness, Combi-Melta - 207pts - Primus Medicae - Cataphractii Armor, Power Fist, Combi-Melta - 132pts Elites: - Contemptor Dreadnought - Kheres Assault Cannon, Chainfist, Drop Pod - 265pts Troops: - 8x Legion Terminators - Sgt w/Chainglaive & Combi-Melta, 7x Comb-Weapons (2 Melta/5 Plasma), 7x Powerfists - 356pts - 10x Legion Veterans - Sgt w/Chainglaive, Squad Meltabombs, 2x Plasma Guns, Rhino, Outflank Tactic - 300pts - 10x Legion Veterans - Sgt w/Chainglaive, Squad Meltabombs, 2x Plasma Guns, Rhino, Outflank Tactic - 300pts Fast Attack: - 3x Jetbikes - Squad Meltabombs - 150pts - 8x Night Raptors - Sgt w/Chainglaive, 2x pairs of LCs - 260pts Heavy Support: - Deathstorm Drop Pod - DP Assault, Krak Launchers - 145pts - Deathstorm Drop Pod - DP Assault, Krak Launchers - 145pts - Caestus Assault Ram - 305pts Lord of War: - Konrad Curze - 435pts Total: 3000 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314661-night-lords-3000-swishy-swooshy-we-comin-for-that-tushy/#findComment-4192060 Share on other sites

Having spent most of 6th ed (before taking up the glory of the HH) using Stormravens to land some squads of terminator clad murder in the midst of the enemy, I can say unequivocally that they die. No matter how nifty they are, flyers die. And this was before Deredeos arrived and lit up everything more than 5 feet off the ground like a Christmas tree on the 4th of July. Take my word having played them, Deredeos eat flyers. They aren't safe, they aren't protected. At the very least, a Deredeo will knock off at least 2-4 hull points off a single flyer per turn, they basically enforce a no fly zone by themselves. Having said that if you're not going to play against one you're made :D The problem you'll always have is, you're in a risk-reward situation with the speed and manoeuvrability of the Cestus against the risk it gets shot down and your unit dead before making significant gains. I'll have to check the rules again but I'm pretty sure you'll have to hover it to let them disembark in which case it will die and a 300 point unit has to do more than be a glorified drop pod imo. Flip side being it fits perfectly with your army's theme Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314661-night-lords-3000-swishy-swooshy-we-comin-for-that-tushy/#findComment-4192071 Share on other sites
Brother Heinrich
Yeah, if not the Caestus, then I can definitely run a spartan, just scared about it being a bigass bullet magnet ripe for targeting on turn one. Brother Heinrich
Conversely I could also teleport the terminators and take a squadron of two predators with lascannon sponsons. Flint13
Well essentially, the Spartan will be shot more while the Caestus will be shot less, but it'll be more likely to be damaged by why does hit it, but it does get a 5+ invuln to anything within its front arc. Upside is that more things will be firing at a Spartan which means less shots at Curze and Co. *EDIT*Keep in mind too, that when you bring a Caestus on the board that a Deredeo only has a 90 degree arc of fire in front of it just like any other dread. Brother Heinrich
Yeah as of right now I'm not terribly worried about the Deredeo as no one here runs one. Probably only a matter of time though until our Gunline Iron Warrior player gets over his aesthetic issues with it and buys two to beat us all even more than he does now. Flint13
Ugh, *that* bro :D Yeah, drop Dad and his Raptor posse in the middle of his lil stronghold and see how great a gunline works when you've got a chainglaive up your nose. Brother Heinrich
Okay, so the lack of stuff on the board turn 1 was troubling me. What do you guys think of this? (Son of a bitch, All my Damn HQ's end up on bikes eventually. I don't know why I fight it.) ROW: Pride of the Legion HQ: - Praetor - Jetbike, Iron Halo, Trophies of Judgement, Paragon Blade - 200pts Elites: - Contemptor Dreadnought - Kheres Assault Cannon, Chainfist, Drop Pod - 265pts Troops: - 5x Legion Terminators - Sgt w/Chainglaive & Combi-Melta, 4x Combi-Meltas, 4x Powerfists, Anvillus Dreadclaw - 330pts - 5x Legion Terminators - Sgt w/Chainglaive & Combi-Melta, 4x Combi-Meltas, 4x Powerfists, Anvillus Dreadclaw - 330pts - 10x Legion Veterans - Sgt w/Chainglaive, Squad Meltabombs, 2x Plasma Guns, Rhino, Outflank Tactic - 300pts - 10x Legion Veterans - Sgt w/Chainglaive, Squad Meltabombs, 2x Plasma Guns, Rhino, Outflank Tactic - 300pts Fast Attack: - 6x Jetbikes - Squad Meltabombs, 2x Volkite Culverins (yay Choom!) - 290pts - 8x Night Raptors - Sgt w/Chainglaive, 2x pairs of LCs - 260pts Heavy Support: - Deathstorm Drop Pod - DP Assault, Krak Launchers - 145pts - Deathstorm Drop Pod - DP Assault, Krak Launchers - 145pts Lord of War: - Konrad Curze - 435pts Total: 3000 So with this we have Curze and the Raptors, Hashec and the Jetbikes, 2x Deathstorms, and Gevaudas all showing up turn 1. That way there is a considerable feth-storm going on in their deployment zone with an angry contemptor and 2 deathstorms throwing krak missiles everywhere. This should hopefully allow Curze and Hashec to scoot upfield with a quickness. Hopefully turn two sees the Atramentar boys arrive in their dreadclaws for further armor-breaking or objective-taking fun. Thoughts? Balthamal
I'm really liking that. I mean a LOT. That's a lot of "oh :cuss" running up the board initially with a hell of a lot more pain descending on Turn 2. If there's anything you could do to boost reserves I'd consider looking at it but my god, just watching that crash into assault against someone would be beautiful Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314661-night-lords-3000-swishy-swooshy-we-comin-for-that-tushy/#findComment-4192663 Share on other sites
helterskelter
Now if you are unfortunate enough to go second, I'd consider being quite cowardly with your deployment. 16 models on the board is not a lot even if one is a primarch. I forsee issues with opposing enemy jump infantry, pie plates and larger, fast moving high strength weaponry, alpha strike mor Deythan, anything with night vision, anything that can cause lots of wounds from a distance. You might want to swap one of your vet squads from outflank to another skill just to get some bodies in the way. Brother Heinrich
So what tactic would you guys switch for? Fearless, Sniper, or Tank Hunters? I could drop one Jetbike as well and give the praetor a void shield harness, Meltabombs, and Digital Lasers. That way turn 1 I have the Jetbikes, Raptors, Curze, Hashec, and the two veteran squads deploying, with the Deathstorms and Contemptor dropping turn turn 1. Terminators arrive from reserve in the anvillus pods and go where they are needed. helterskelter
I'd keep one out flanking vets, for the dynamic. If you gave the other fearless they could sit on an objective or at least not leg it in the face of casualties, if your opponent were to blow up the rhino and take out some dudes Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314661-night-lords-3000-swishy-swooshy-we-comin-for-that-tushy/#findComment-4192909 Share on other sites
