Night Lords Questions: I Got A Lot

Recommended Posts

So I've read through just about everything on the Night Lords I can in preparation for a project I'm doing, but I have a ton of questions still.

1.) What does the Night Lords' pre-primarch color scheme look like? Was it always that midnight blue or did Curze change it? The Forge World book lists no alternative scheme.

2.) I know for a fact that some Night Lords use projectors on their armor to generate the lighting effect, but does that preclude Night Lords from painting lightning on their armor?

3.) Again, I read my background, but are the Night Lords on Terra all drawn from the prisons of Terra? If so, are they ONLY influenced by the classical depictions of the mafia in medium, or could their recruits come from a variety of international criminal backgrounds. Say... the Yakuza?

4.) Do we have any documentation about the culture or visual appearance of breacher siege squads in the VIIIth?

5.) Do any of the Solar Auxilia serve with the Night Lords? Like a force that exists to secure the planets the Night Lords terrify into compliance?

1) Look up: Crimson Sons. Only known Pre-Curze variant, iirc.

2) AFAIK, No, it doesnt.

3) IIRC, its a Prison Colony underneath Albion(?). So, imo, mostly European Prisoners. Doesn't mean that, post unification, that Prison Colony became all-inclusive to anybody the Emperor didn't like.

4) I don't recall ever seeing any Images in the FW Books, so right now? don't think so.

5) Yes, there are. Every Legion Force had Auxiliary Forces that were attached to them either permanently or otherwise.

Some of the many questions we have around our beloved legion Brother, I can't answer any of those with definitive answers but best guess for some would be along the lines of:

3) I'd imagine that the prisons of terra at the time of inception would be fairly multicultural so I can't see why any of the culturally different criminal cartels could be drawn upon for inspiration, I've used a mixture of slavic and turkish/armenian naming generators for my company...

4) I'm currently looking at having two 16 man breacher units and was considering just this morning how I could decorate the boarding shields and breacher helms (In fact I love the breacher helms so much i'm considering using them on my rapier squadron and tactical support and devestator squads too) I was considering having each shield tell a story of the marine's exploits a little like tattoos tell the story of a member of the Russian Mafia...

5) Again not 100% sure but i think theres mention of the fact that the Solar Auxilia like a lot of the other legions find the Night Lords methods less than desirable and that they usually come in and clear up the aftermath once the Night Lords have castigated. However there's nothing I'm aware of which prevents some sort of Nostromon raised levy (pre destruction of course)...

1.)They were always Midnight Blue. The Crimson Sons were unique in that they colored parts of their armor red. It was never specified if that was a relic of the pre-Heresy scheme or if it was just picked up from their time serving with a Rogue Trader.

2.)No, painting the lightning is absolutely normal. Mostly because that was the only way it was done until Massacre was released.

3.)Like all Legions, they would have drawn from all over the planet, but the place primary mentioned was an underground prison with a mention of drawing recruits from Albion. It wasn't until the short story Child of the Night that we learned that prison, or at least a prison, was underneath Albion.

I'm not sure about 4 and 5 so since Slipstream has access to the FW books, I would go with his answers.

AFAIK there wasn't a single prison, but a bunch of them, including one in Albia (and not Albion). And Tempest tells of a pre-Guilliman XIIIth chapter (the Nemesis) having a campaign with the VIIIth and adopting their midnight-blue helms and black gauntlets.

Well, there's only one prison mentioned in Massacre and the reason the one in Child of Night is most likely the same one is because both are described as being penal colonies with pale-skinned children who were premiere killers. So unless there just happens to be a ton of those lying around, and the one in Massacre is the only prisonpenal colony mentioned, it is somewhat inaccurate to say all Terrans came from a prison, or rather all the prisons on Terra at any rate.

As for descriptions of said penal colony, Zharost makes it seem rather tribal as he and a female companion work to hunt down a creature if I recall correctly. So no real "criminal" culture there.

Legion backgrounds going so far back to Terra have never been so fully explored that you can without a doubt say the night lords exclusively have a "mafia" influence. It's the 30th century, criminal gangs are of course going to be different, if you want to make your company themed as a "yakuza" culture, go for it, the beauty of warhammer is some of the background is left up to your own invention.
