Audemus
Alright, I've been staring at the Solar Auxilia guys since shortly after I came back in April from over ten years of not playing 40k (2nd Edition) and I've finally buckled. Since April I've built a 2,000 point Skitarii army followed by a 4,000+ point Militarum Tempestus/Imperial Guard (AM) army and in my typically mad man style got rid of all my concerns working with resin by tackling the Marauder Destroyer. I'm fairly certain that after building that monstrosity with hacksaws and diamond files that I'm ready for anything FW can throw at me model-wise, which had been my initial concern with trying 30K. The cost is definitely intimidating coming off of building my guard army and I don't know that it will grow as fast and shipping alone keeps me from painting in that instant-gratification style I'm used to...but I'll survive. It leaves me with time to do fun and exciting things like break the Veletaris artwork I found in a picture on the web into it's color components to allow for a mock up without having a model! Current Mock Up: Armor: Slate Grey - Eshin Grey > Nuln Oil > Dawnstone Dry Brush Trim: Dawnstone > Administratum Grey or Warlock Bronze > Leadbelcher > Runefang Dry Brush Uniform: Rakarth Flesh > Ushbati Bone > Sepia Wash (Agrax if Sepia is to harsh) > Pallid Flesh Visor: Blue Horror with a base coat of Caledor Sky if necessary. http://i.imgur.com/3RHAJgC.png My guard army for all of it's brown camo has some unrealistic colors in it that I was using as accents. I've decided I'm going to avoid that with the SA and make them gritty/realistic looking. This is also why I'm going to try and make sure every single one of them is based on a sculpted resin base to keep the army looking uniform and blending in with the board as best they can. With that being said, I've decided on a basic tactical level that I want to embrace the all knowing and wonderful Choom! So the army will be built thematically with that in mind. Currently I've got two Veletaris Storm Sections en-route (aka in about a week and change in FW time) and the actual HH Book 4: Conquest should arrive any day. I'm relatively certain my next moves should be the Auxilia Tactical Command Section and Dracosan's for the Storm Sections...after that, I'm kind of lost as to what I should prioritize. I'm hoping to get some suggestions on whether I should go for Incinerator's first or if I should prepare for the power axe Veletaris to support my Lord Marshal on the front. Anything you guys can think of to help would be greatly appreciated as I have friends who will let me field the SA against them in 40K, as I really don't know anyone here in Atlanta that plays it, and I'd like to get them on the table as quickly (relatively speaking) as possible in case they change their mind. Marshal Rohr
Nice! My SA project is farther down the road, so Im excited to see where you take it. I've been surprised by how few Auxilia armies have popped up after their army lists were released. Audemus
Nice! My SA project is farther down the road, so Im excited to see where you take it. I've been surprised by how few Auxilia armies have popped up after their army lists were released. Yeah, I was confused at the lack of army pictures out there for them and that's with just amazing models. I think the issue is people see them as "guard" and as such won't pay the price being asked for them. Hell, I had people telling me they couldn't believe I spent time on my Veteran/Scion squads when I was playing at my local GW Store. I'm very much of the mind set that if I bought the model then I'm going to paint it to the best of my standards. It's been since around 2000 when I last painted and in 2007, when I tried painting again, I had a medical issue that caused my hands to jitter whenever I tried to do anything detail oriented (sign a credit card receipt, use chopsticks, etc etc) and despite trying I just couldn't paint through it. So when the issue went away earlier this year I pounced on my paint brush and I've been trying to improve my painting ever since. One of the reasons I'm excited about playing 30K is the models themselves have more depth and character, that's the kind of challenge I'm looking for to improve my painting. I actually did a random sampling of figures, chronologically, that I've been doing since April...as the entire Guard army has been completed in about 3 months...and it's actually really cool to see how my lines became more controlled as well as my color theory improved. Not only that but I got rid of the preset paint scheme in White Dwarf and developed my own, which was really fun. I'm really looking forward to the Veletaris arriving so that I can see where things go from here. Thanks for the warm welcome! Marshal Rohr
Exceptional progress, brother. I love the Solar Auxilia vibe for the blending of Napoleonic and sci-fi aesthetic. My own will be based on Jean Lannes men and I'm going to try and turn the steam punk aesthetic up to the max. Wooden stocks for rifles and all that. I'm excited to see you Velatarii. Any thought to their background? Audemus
I'll have to hold off on background until I can sit down with the book and really read about them. I grew up with 40K, started at the age of fifteen and pride myself on having a firm grasp on the current history back to the Rogue Trader books, so if it were any other army I would probably have a good idea of where to take things, but these guys are in the middle of the Heresy without any documentation before then. Hell, I even read the Ian Watson books from way back when where you find out some...highly disturbing things about the way the Imperium is run. I won't spoil the books but trust me when I say that it is a fairly mind wrecking revelation and one which Games Workshop has seemingly pushed under the rug because as if they were the Inquisition themselves. Once I've read Conquest, I'll puzzle out a base story in my head and at that point I'll turn the pen over to my English/History major side. When I wrote the fluff for my Guard, I decided to tackle it by writing communiques in the same style that the Anphelion Project was written. There's a few typos in them, mainly because I try not to stop when I get going and I haven't had a chance to go back to them yet, but below you can see some of the communiques from Leander VI that flesh out the story with written narrative. I will be making star charts and accompanying artwork once I finish up the messages to create a fluff-only codex for my army. The process helps me get in the head of the soldiers and the forces controlling them so that I can better understand what matches the army itself. The TLDR of the Communiques: Tzeentch cultists had infiltrated the planetary government of Leander VI at all levels and were using their authority to prepare for mass sacrifices and conversions of the planetary populace. Ordo Excorium was dispatched and upon assessing the situation, executed Exterminatus via Viral Bomb on the planetary surface. Shortly after that a probe was sent down to gather readings only to find that the jungle portions of the planet were still there and processing the virus into a poison and expelling it like oxygen into the planetary atmosphere. No one knows how this is occurring and fears within the Inquisition that Nurgle will turn his gaze on this as a way to allow his forces to escape Exterminatus in the future prevents the planet from being flat out destroyed. The Lions of Leander VI are comprised of multiple regiments from the Imperium who have been merged together to create a defense force while the scientists try to figure out how the plants are doing something that shouldn't be possible. Just let me know if these take up to much room and I'll downsize them to links, don't want to be the new guy breaking sub-forum rules. Marshal Rohr
Well judging from that your SA fluff will be top notch! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314734-solar-auxilia-finally-giving-in-to-the-year-30k/#findComment-4193647 Share on other sites
Audemus
Well judging from that your SA fluff will be top notch! Despite the mailman not leaving a package notification...I had a feeling the book had arrived this afternoon and I was definitely correct. I'm currently reading through it now and batting around background ideas for my Solar Auxilia regiment , so I guess we'll find out soon enough! I have to admit the Ash Scorpions push at the Maw was damn impressive, shame I don't like painting primarily in white! http://i.imgur.com/Rm2rBgx.png Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314734-solar-auxilia-finally-giving-in-to-the-year-30k/#findComment-4193807 Share on other sites
