New Militarum Tempestus Units I'd Like To See

I was sitting in the bath tub looking through my MT codex for the 800th time when I put my head back and fell asleep.  In my dreams, I saw the future of the Militarum Tempestus.

HQ

Separate Tempestor Prime and command squads.  Tempestus are all about flexibility and getting the job done, right?  A tempestor prime is supposed to be so badass he needs a wheelbarrow to carry his balls around, right?  Why not have a tempestor prime that is on the level of a lord commissar?  This would create a little extra draw for the codex.  Oh, we should also probably give him a refractor field.

Tempestor Prime Flavors

Tempestor Prime: Can give 2 orders at clarion vox net range.  Can order out of a Taurox.  3 wounds.

Tempestor Tertius: Standard lesser HQ, can give a single order, can order from taurox.  2 wounds.

Tempestor Tacticus: guardsman statline, can roll leadership to bring in reserves more easily, give acute senses to a unit not on the table or turn a single voxcaster into a locator beacon for a turn.  Cannot give normal orders, but can MTC and deep strike.  2 wounds

Tempestor Psykana: A primaris psyker in carapace armor with a hotshot lasgun who can deep strike and has MTC.  2 wounds

Tempestor Prefectus: Commissar tempestor who comes stock with 2 wounds, bolt pistol/CCW, carapace armor AND can deep strike and move through cover.

Elite

Veteran Scions: Deadly veterans of, like, 3 campaigns, these merciless souls carry HSLG and HSLP/CCW.  Also like the old storm troopers, they can choose a mission during deployment to help them with certain kinds of maneuvers (acute senses with outflank, drop-shoot-run or drop-run-shoot, etc.  They can take 3 special weapons.

Fast Attack

Taurox Marauder: The Taurox prime can already be assembled open-topped, so why not do a cheaper taurox that is still fast?  It can have its hull autocannons or HSVG, but is open-topped and has a rule where it can go REALLY fast and still drop off scions.

Scion Bikers: light, off-road bikes mounting twin-linked HSLGs that can take special weapons to help scions deal with fast movers once they're on the ground.  Doesn't need cluster mines like SM scout bikers, but scouts or stealth due to their tiny size would not go amiss.  Similar idea to rough riders, but bent toward precision shooting rather than CC.  Since GW needs mileage out of their kits, it should be configurable as rough bikers or as MT bikers.

Scion Buggies: like actual special forces, these buggies should be Valk-mobile and carry heavier weapons than scions normally go for.  They should have the same suspension as the Taurox to avoid embarrassing mishaps.  Maybe they can ride in a valk for extra fun.  You couldn't call it a Tauros, because that's too close to Taurox, but maybe something similar.

Troops: Nothing new here, maybe make vanilla Scions a point less to bring them in line with the incredibly points-efficient skitarii.

Heavy Support:

A vehicle similar to the vendetta, but smaller.  Maybe it mounts a couple of autocannons for strafing ground targets or can be built to carry 6 scions into the black heart of battle.  Analogous to a modern-day Kiowa.

The Taurox Linebacker: a heavy support taurox that coughs up some or all of its internal space to mount even more fearsome weaponry such as a plasma  cannon.  As the Taurox is to the raider, so this would be to the ravager.

These were the half-glimpsed images of an army that lies somewhere between space marines and common guardsmen.  We will likely never get another codex since every single unit in C:MT appears in C:AM, but I would like to see the MT aesthetic and rules expanded upon.  GW, if you are reading this, you have carte blanche to shamelessly pilfer my ideas, just make more plastic MT crack for me.

Not literally reading it in the bath I hope - destroying Guard literature is punishable by death, even if by accident... tongue.png

I like the Veteran Scion idea, though better fluffed as a "specialist" squad. Scions should be awesome as can be by default. Also pistols and CCWs for all, that should never have been taken away. Linebacker, name aside, isn't a bad idea but I'd rather a new vehicle rather than another Taurox version. Some form of scout tank that has better armour, have it scoot about with the other vehicles packing a punch or perhaps have it as a shield unit, designed more to attract fire than dish it out?

Rules/stats/points wise I think the existing units just need some tweaks to form a stronger codex. Sadly I think the chances of GW doing anything with the MT codex is slim in the foreseeable future, given that they couldn't be bothered to touch the Guard after release. Or in true GW style if they did the Guard codex would be updated with better Scions and C:MT will be left with the old stuff...

To make scions better:

They need a points drop.

Their formations could use smaller options.

They could really use access to the vendetta.

Cheaper options for the taurox prime (nobody is paying for relic plating)

Some kind of high strength weapon, Either in the form of the vendetta, or a scion heavy weapon squad.

Skitarii are relentless, and cheaper, and tougher. I'd like relentless for the volleyguns and any future heavy weapons.

A psyker would come in handy.

A cheaper flyer would be a nice option, such as a valkyrie with just a multilaser.

Edit: Almost forgot. A regimental commander with more than one order.

Here are some simple changes that I think would make things significantly better for scions without adding any new models:

1. give us an option to exchange deep strike for infiltrate

2. let us pay for camo cloaks/stealth

3. give scions some relics

4. maybe a small points drop in points

5. smaller formations

6. a "Hot-Shot" rule that subracts 1 point from all armor save rolls if it doesn't fully penetrate, where shooting an ap3 hot shot at a terminator will bring it down to a 3+ armor but will not be penetrated by ap3 weapons

7. Access to orders like Fire On My target (ignores cover) and First Rank Second Rank

Changes with some new models

1. a new unique character

2. an upgrade sprew for the Taurox that gives it extra armor and some scarier weapons at the cost of its transport capacity

3. a higher level officer (can be fulfilled by giving lord commissars senior officer)

4. the Vendetta and a GW conversion kit

How about a Scioned up Sentinel? Have it more manoeuvrable perhaps by giving it 'fast' rule.

Or better melee capability 'used as a ram where you cant fit a taurox', something like that. Although I suppose a taurox is supposed to be able to go anywhere, including inside scenic cathedrals where doors and rubble needs to be hauled away.

Think the suits from Avatar:)

I'd love to see the "third" special weapon slot that AM Veteran Squads get become a reward/experimental weapon only accessible by specializing a squad that way.

For instance here is a couple just off the top of my head...if they are grossly unbalanced don't blame me, I'm writing these on the fly as an example. cool.png

* Up to three Tempestus Scions that have not been upgraded with one of the options above may replace their hot-shot lasgun with one item from the Special Weapon list.

* If three Tempestus Scions in the squad upgrade their weapons to the same type of weapon the squad receives one of the corresponding experimental weapons instead.

* 3 Plasma Guns taken:

** Plasma Burst Rifle - The Tempestus Scions receive specialized Plasma Burst Rifles from the Adeptus Mechanicus to test in the field.

*** Special Rule: Rapid Fire,

**** New Rules: Haywire, Gets Hot - Now occurs on a 1 or a 2

* 3 Meltaguns taken:

** Melta-Carbines - The Tempestus Scion receives Melta-Carbines from the Adeptus Mechancius to test in the field.

*** Special Rules: Assault 1, Melta,

**** New Rule: Full Burn - At the cost of firing the next turn the Meltagun can strike the same target twice or, if they have been removed from play, a second shot can be allocated as an automatic hit to a target directly behind the initial one. This target must be in range of the initial shot and all applicable save rules still apply.

* 3 Hot-shot Volley Guns taken:

** Hot-Shot Revolving Rifle - The Tempestus Secion receives a Hot-shot Revolving Rifle from the Adeptus Mechanicus to test in the field.

*** Special Rules: Salvo 2/4 is no longer applicable to this weapon.

**** New Rule: Portable Multi-laser - The gun receives the new attribute: Assault 3, Str: 5, AP 3, Gets Hot

I actually put together an experimental Militarum Tempestus Codex with "filled out" rules and units:

It still could use some refinement, but I am pretty pleased with it so far.
