Dreadknight Alternatives

YMMV, of course, but I think the Dreadknight is impossibly ugly. As my Grey Knights are definitely a side-project (mostly intended as allies for my Sisters of Battle/Inquisition force), it's also pretty damn expensive. So, the question is, assuming that I want to win my share of friendly games... what makes a good alternative to a Dreadknight? If I'm going to spend points on Grey Knights stuff (or, someday, field my Grey Knights independently) what should I use instead?

Thanks.

There is no alternative. Dreadknights are the best unit in our codex, no contest. They're pretty much the reason anyone bothers to Ally with us.

If you don't like the model, I'd suggest checking out the many conversions people have done. Pentient Engines would be a cool place to start (I find it amusing people complain about DK's, but yet Pentient Engines share most of the same design and never rate a mention or complaint by anyone). You could also go down the path of using a Dreadnought chassis implanted where the pilot sits. Fits reasonably well with a bit of converting, and looks pretty nice.

I'm not a huge fan of Penitent Engines myself, TBH.

Well. It sounds like I should consider a Dreadknight conversion of some kind when I have the money to buy one.

Ive been having the same conundrum too. I plan to convert my 2 base Dreadknights to something fantastic. I was here are my thoughts:

1. Exo-Squad-esque Dreadknights:

--difficulty: easy to medium

--Idea: Basicly, they are already exo-skeletons, but in a more Aliens sense. So, Lets do a little kit bashing. Take some parts from a stormraven (mostly the main cockpit), maybe parts from a venerable or standard dreadnought, probably some plasticard+greenstuff (to fill in the odd spots) and then layer them on the "baby-carrier" portion. Might not be the cleanest of jobs, but with time, effort, and practice, it should come out better than before.

2. Cinematic Hulk-buster Iron Man Conversion

-whether there is a detail model that can be used in its place is iffy, but the general overall look of the Hulk-buster in Grey knight colors would make for an interesting conversion project. Definitely make those Dreadknights stand out.

thats all i have for know, but thought I would share and get people's creative juices flowing. happy.png

Great ideas, man! Be sure to post what you make. Some of these - especially #2 - seem good enough to make me reconsider my stance... though I fear that such a conversion would be basically a scratch-build and really test my skills.

I think I found my Dreadknight:

And a link for credit where it's due.

I will probably keep the sword in the hand rather than wrist-mounting it, but... I think this is how I'm going to do it. Simple - definitely within my skill level - and effective.

This is my Karamazov Dreadknight, who works as my HQ when I don't take any others, or just the head of a squad of 3 smile.png

Not completely painted yet but on the way

Someone should email Games Workshop, and convince them to make Inquisitor Karamazov's model look like this. It would at least spare the character from the nicknames he receives on 1d4chan, due to the ridiculous appearance the Dreadnought-based "Throne of Judgment" gave him. (The Space Marine Dreadnought looks great with a Dreadnought sarcophagus, but with Karamazov and his retinue on it? That's like replacing a Harley-Davidson's seat with a full-sized sofa- with something that out-of-proportion sitting on it, the original vehicle's awesome appearance will never shine through.)

All the conversions look good. But I have to disagree about the looks of the model itself. It is honestly one of the best looking outta so many other disasters that GKW came out with, like the ugly mini DK they made for marines, Beliel's I gotta pee stance. The new Archon, etc. Now, the nice thing about our hobby is converting things to your liking and I applaude all who do them.
