Grim Dog Studios
Hi all! Decided to put up a WIP log my ultramarines. I would like to say I will keep it updated regularly, but I always struggle to keep interest in the army I am trying to paint. It's a big problem for me, but I hope I will manage to make something of this one! :P I've been struggling to choose what Legion to get down and start collecting properly for well over a year now, but I think I have settled on the Ultramarines. They seem to be everything that I like in a marine, and are unlike their 40k counterparts in my opinion. The "humanization" of Gulliman in the books really got me, and the same goes for the marines themselves. I feel like they are very well written in my opinion, and this was the deciding factor in choosing to collect them. The army itself is going to be based upon a small section of a company led by a Line captain, who in the fluff in my head, had self doubts about his own leadership abilities but found himself on Calth when his superior was killed and he lead the remnants of his company in the ensuing battles. I will eventually attempt to write some fluff to accompany the images in the future, but I can promise nothing spectacular as I don't think I'm that good at writing stuff, but I will give it a shot! Anyway, I don't enjoy boring people with too much text, and I'm honestly struggling with thinking of something else to say so I will just slap up some WIP pics to keep the thread alive till the next update!! Here is the Line Captain himself: http://i.imgur.com/KZaT7Co.jpg?1 I removed the minotaur icongraphy from his chest, but now feel it looks too bare, I would have liked an Ultra symbol between two wings, but I have little to no skill with greenstuff so not entirely sure how I am going to rectify this unfortunately. This next chap is my master of signals, his backpack will get some metal rod, as the resin bits snapped off! http://i.imgur.com/OI76lrh.jpg?1 And finally for today is a veteran sergeant I converted. http://i.imgur.com/6ZntLOp.jpg?1 As you can see, all my officers/sergeants are going to receive helmet crests from anvil industrys, and all of my basic troops are also getting the leather straps that hang from the groin (not too sure on the technical name of then haha) that anvil industry also sell, however they are cut down to three straps instead of the five that they come as, as the 5 do not look very good when just slapped on. I will take a pic of my first tactical squad tomorrow so you can see what I mean by this! Many thanks, James Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314912-heresy-ultramarines/ Share on other sites

Grim Dog Studios
Thank you for the replies! Just thought I'd upload the pics of my first tactical squad. They're nothing too fancy compared to my other conversions up top i don't think, mostly just the stock MK IV bits with a few conversions, and the pteruges? attached to them. Hopefully you can see what I mean't by thinking just the three trimmed down from the five looked better on the miniatures! http://i.imgur.com/yoolbpj.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/4TlPt32.jpg?1 Then I've also made this guy. Going to fill in the SW rune markings etc with some GS, but I'm not too sure what he is supposed to represent at present! http://i.imgur.com/178GyY4.jpg?1 I've also tried press-moulding an Ultras symbol for the captain's chest, but it didn't really look very good, so I think I might just leave it bare and stick an Ultra decal on there. Thank you for looking, James! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314912-heresy-ultramarines/#findComment-4199561 Share on other sites
GrandMagnus
That last marine would make an awesome Legion Champion. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314912-heresy-ultramarines/#findComment-4199565 Share on other sites
Armond
Not sure why, but I feel your helmet crests are a little pushed back. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/314912-heresy-ultramarines/#findComment-4199667 Share on other sites
Grim Dog Studios
Thank you for the comments! Not sure why, but I feel your helmet crests are a little pushed back. I see where you are coming from on this. That last one in particular does look a bit off compared to the others in my opinion. The crests themselves are shaped slightly funny, and the only way they sit on the helmet is when they are that far back. You can snap him up on ebay for about £25 usually. I had to cut away his arms and trimmed his chest detail down!
