Brass Etchings From Forgeworld

I use them a lot on my Chaos era Iron Warriors.

I general use super glue for the brass etching.  There really easy to shape, I've use them for banner, robes (Dark Mechaniicus).  Just make sure have somthing to help shape them & help hold them in place while glue dry, I use the Games Workshop mold line remover tool.  It will not be a problem useing them on a Dreadnought leg.

So here, I've use it on my Chaos Knight shoulder pad & other parts on the model like shield & banner/loin cloth.

I've found that it depends on the radius of the curve you're attempting to bend it to.  The etched Flesh Tearers saws were a real beast to form to a relatively large terminator pauldron.  Curving them around a regular SM one would be very difficult (I've tried).  Frankly, even the terminator one still looks not so good.

Someone here gave me the tip to put a tiny dab of greenstuff under it and use it to position the piece and smash it down to set before trying the forming.  I try to do a bit of pre-forming before that stage though.

Once they're primed, they paint up like anything else.

Wanted to know if anyone had used these, and what success they had with them. Also any tips on application, and how easily can the metal be shaped to match curved surfaces (I'm thinking deadnought legs etc)?

TBH, If I was going to buy a set, I'd use rapid mould to make casts of the etchings, then GS to make flexible copies that I can put where I like.

They seem too shallow for press moulding to me.

Like others I've found them easy to work with on flat surfaces and do employ them quite extensively. The aquilas can be bent relatively easily to go on a curved surface (see dreadnought left shin below)I have some super glue that seems to take a little while to dry so I'll dry fit the piece of brass and then apply some of the glue to the surface the icon will go on once I'm happy; can make adjustments this way if the piece doesn't go on perfectly.

Here are some examples of parts I've used.

They only give you two of Ezekiel's chest icon (bottom photo). If it was more than that I'd probably use the sheet a lot more extensively.

Any tips on how to get the paint to stay in the letter etchings?

I've applied two of the Blood Angels placks to a Dread and base coated. If I now try to fill in with a wash or watered down black paint they spill over and look horrible, but also seem to have far too fine etchings to try to fill in with paint by hand - Any suggestions?

I actually haven't used any of the pieces with words on them, yet. Looking at them I wouldn't attempt to paint the words at all really. Do a base coat, but allow wash to do the work for you. Very thin was, mind, and be prepared to clean up afterwards. Like you say, they're too shallow to do anything else. All the pieces I've used, I've painted them first and done everything else around them. They require small brushes (size 0 or 2/0) with good points, thin paint and a lot of care.
