Baneblade sponsons

With two sets I can't see anyone not going front and back. Though I'm sure there's some numpty out there that's done it :P With the use of magnets it's no longer a modelling question though, just a cost/effectiveness one ;) That said I do miss the fact you could buff side armour to AV14 if you didn't take any, not sure why they removed that.

Aye...there's only one proper place to put the sponsons...front AND back!  Honestly...the default weaponry just isn't worth ~450 points...but if you max out your sponson sets, you gain EIGHT additional heavy weapons that all benefit from immunity to "weapon destroyed" AND can be targeted independently of one another.  a 450 stripped down basic superheavy is a joke...but for 100 points more, it's suddenly pretty decent for the cost.  You could go with just one pair of sponsons...but I'd recommend two pair in every case!

Ok...take my shadowsword.  ~460 points naked.  For 460 points, I get a strength D pieplate with a whole bunch of HPs.  For 50 points more, I gain TWO lascannons and TWO twinlinked heavy bolters that are each independently targeted...show me another place where I can get two lascannons and two heavy bolters for 50 points, and then I'll ask you if they're as survivable as the baneblade sponsons.  For 50 points, it's a phenomenal deal!  If I could get eight sponsons for 200 points, I wouldn't hesitate.  Ten weapons (including the hull TLHB) for 550 points is infinitely better than one weapon for 450 points....and this coming from a guy with over a dozen russes, none of which have sponsons.

A question with the sponsons specifically the heavy bolters. So if you leave a single part off when gluing it together your sponsons has a larger range of movement and the bolters can actually fire directly forward. Would you allow this? Personally I have always thought its stupid that the sponsons have such a small angle to fire at. Is this modelling for an advantage?

The general rule is similar to that of the Land Raider: lascannons at the back, shorter ranged weapons at the front.

Of course there are exceptions. The Fellblade (which shares the Baneblade chassis) puts its laser destroyers on the back, but the Spartan (Land Raider on steroids) puts them on the front.

In short, opt for what feels right to you aesthetically.

When it comes to the baneblade variants, the lascannons turrets are on top of the TLHB sponsons, so this is a valid point, but one with very limited applicability...

By definition, yes. The guns have a good enough firing arc I've found if you look at the rule book's page it's fairly generous.

Well...the rule is that if it looks like it could shoot in a given arc, it can, it doesn't have to actually be moveable at all, you can glue everything down if you want.  Hence, the baneblade sponsons can fire straight forward, and there's no "modeling for advantage"  problem in this case.  Besides, the back sponson can't shoot through the front one, so...

/edit/

on the other hand, if you're talking about enabling the fire of the two front sponsons to converge two feet in front of the tank, that's a whole different story...

Isn't "When in doubt, take more?" the unofficial Guard motto? Two pair, always.

I just wanted them to fire straight forward so I could shoot stuff like orks approaching. I'm not trying to shoot through the hull at something an inch away (That's what demolisher cannons are for)

I did not mean to imply that that was your intent.  I have encountered people who want to shoot all three heavy bolters on a leman russ at a point target 3" in front of the tank, but my point was to highlight a scenario where WarriorFish's concerns would be spot on, not to suggest that you were intending to cheat.

I've had to pull out the language on firing arcs more than once because one of my demolisher turrets is glued in place, and certain unfriendly opponents have tried to claim that I'd have to pivot the entire tank (in the movement phase, of course...oops, I guess I don't get to shoot this turn) to aim the cannon.

@coffeegrunt

I meant three pairs of sponsons. Not sure if you can buy three pairs but 6 lascannons would be nice

@march10k

Yea I've had the same arguments pulled on me before. The worst was a player quite a while ago saying I couldn't use the heavy flamer on my razorback because the template would touch my own model.

I was just trying to figure out if I could fire straight forward with the side sponsons.
