Leviathan Dread & Knight Atrapos Kits

Hi All,

I know some people are interested in this, and I didn't want to to clutter the 40k Open Day thread in the News forum, so here's a dedicated thread for anybody wanting a closer look at the kits and instructions.

In order not to have a wall of pictures, I've put them in spoiler tags - open the ones that you want to see.

First off - both of these kits are White Box kits (comes in a white cardboard box, containing a bag wrapped in bubble-wrap), the quality of the casting is great, and there are very detailed instructions. From the instructions it's obvious that both of the kits have been developed through CAD, and it's reflected in the clean and crisp detailing on the casts.

First off - the Leviathan Dread:

Cerastus Knight Atrapos:

I've only done the first batch of them, as the others are more generic Cerastus components.

I think those legs are quite different looking from the Deredeo actually. They share a similiar feet design, but i think the Eddy has more of a forward toe, where this one has the side toes more towards the middle? At any rate, the knees are different, and this one has more of an upper leg than the Eddy.

Upper torso appears to look like a heavily modified and armored Contemptor chassis, where the extra armor, interestingly enough, ends up making the torso reminiscent of the mkIV Castra Ferrum.

All in all, I'm quite enamored by the design, and will be picking one up. In the meantime I can't wait to see you put yours together, Parker.

I think if we were to do comparisons, I think it's more comparable to the contemptor than the Deredeo. It does come on a 80mm base instead of a standard 60mm Dreadnought base, but the legs are the same height if a bit stockier.

I might hold off building it until we get the great Grav Cannon arm, although I might see how it handles magnets on the arms.

I'll try and take a lok tonight, pretty sure i still have an unassembled Fist Contemptor that I can use the arms with.

It feels like it should be a good fit size wise - I don't see it being any taller than a regular Conemptor chassis, just a bit wider in the torso and legs. The thing will be around a) whether you're looking at replacing the weapons below the pauldron, I think they would fit well. or b) whether you're looking to replace the pualdron too, which I think would fit, but may look odd against the rest of the chassis.

Must admit, I much prefer how the Leviathan looks without the phosphex bomb launcher - something about its silhouette

I wonder what it'd look like if you substituted the central phosphex launcher for the two missile pods from the FW Ironclad body, one on each 'pauldron'

Hi, thanks for sharing these - hugely useful, and has definitely given me food for thought.

Could you tell me if Contemptor arms would fit on the Leviathan shoulders? Would they scale well, or look ridiculously weedy?

It seems ForgeWorld has done some degree of comparison between the different Dreadnought chassis as part of their Bulletin today:

I'll have to see if I can get mine assembled this weekend and whether the arms are going to look small - based on the above I'd say they would

I believe this to be an understatement to say the least. Look at how massive the claw compares to Chuck's fist!

Might work? Also, perhaps you could put the phosphex somewhere else if you don't want it in the center, its pretty compact.

It's due to be around 3 weeks after the open day so possibly next Friday?

Would you be kind enough to show the sides and rear of the claw arm please as I'm a moron and can't figure out fully where the wires and the two single plates go sad.png

Hey - not a problem, but it'll have to wait until tomorrow when the light is better. I'm assembling at the moment, and I've been scratching my head for a while too, and the detailed instructions that come with the main body don't include the weapons, and the clampack the weapons come in don't have instructions.

I did however take some rough shots in bad light, but I think I have figured it all out. These are the parts that are part of this:

(don't blame me for what the components are lying on, we all have to wash our resin and these are the spare tea-towels I wrap them in to dry them off - leave me alone :p )

The confusing parts are the the two sets of cables and the two mirrored panels on the top sprue. That is until you realise that these arms can be mounted on either side of the Leviathan, and you only use one set of these depending on what side you're mounting the arm on.

if you flip that top sprue over you can see a raised profile over the mirrored panels, and these correspond to the rear facing panel on the shoulder with the ball joint that attaches to the main body.

Those vents have a long thin recessed area along the bottom that align to one end of the cable bundle. The other end of the bundle that is more oval-ish goes into the circular piece that forms the wrist with the chosen hand (drill or claw).

I'm guessing that either you want to build a static arm and not flex those cables, or you're going to have to heat them up and bend them to fit the arm that you've built. Not sure what the best approach is, but I'm guessing the less bending you can do the better.

Once I get these arms built tomorrow I'll take some shots so that people can see them constructed and know what to do in the future. Here's where I'm at in the building process.

Looks sick as hell.

Is the missile rack on the top the Hunter Killers? I assume the Frag Grenades and Phosphex Launcher are the vertical line of ports above the waist Volkite/Flamers.

Ok - so I said I would do some more detailed pictures of the arms, and I figured I would give some instructions.

So when you get you Leviathan arm, the pieces are assembled in the following order:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t272/m_r_parker/Word%20Bearers/4B0707A9-4C2E-4098-A3C1-71C195F3C5B6_zpsgojjdlqz.jpg

Note: you only need one set of cables, and one of the vent plates for the shoulder.

Once you have them in the right order, it's a case of bringing them together. Some components have more rotation options than others, so I find it best to assemble those components with least mobility and then decide how you want the others to look. For me that means assembling the claw / drill and attaching to the wrist, and connecting the upper arms to the shoulder. That leaves the elbow for positioning:

make sure you get the elbow and lower arm orientated correctly. They fit together in two seperate ways, the right way is to have cable attachment point on the wrist on the same side of the armoured plates protecting the elbow. The other side (the inside of the elbow) should look like this:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t272/m_r_parker/Word%20Bearers/7BFAEC93-C214-4199-8275-83A6E6A7BFAF_zpsj7yfqkuh.jpg

And the outside should look like this:

Combining everything together, and bending the cable to fit the connectors should look like this:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t272/m_r_parker/Word%20Bearers/75479D86-4E6B-436F-847D-A68C9686E174_zps2kuf8wcm.jpg

And when attached to the Leviathan looks like this:

Hopes this helps everyone trying to assemble these. The instructions for the body are surprisingly good, it's a shame there aren't any for the arms.

Now all I need to do is Word Bearer him up a little,  and he'll be ready to paint.

  • 2 weeks later...

Has anyone actually come up with a way to magnetize the arms, because the shoulder joint is not part of the arm section and also the cable issue. If you had extra shoulders I think it would be easy then.

Someone needs to start making aftermarket shoulders so this will be easier.
