Unorthodox things that work for you.

A thread for sharing tactics and set ups that differ from the norm, but you really like.

For myself I've developed a real love for Vanquisher Pask with Plasma cannons.  The unit is as such:

Pask Vanquisher, lascannon, plasma cannons

Bodyguard Exterminator, Lascannon, Plasma Cannons

I've found Pask smacks around heavy armour, while the exterminator split fires and destroys lighter armour and transports.  The Plasma cannons are great as they get mileage out of the preferred enemy, and mean the vanquisher and exterminator are a threat to anything, even when the armour is neutralised.

An added benefit is that all the weapons have great range, so when combined with infantry support in my games they very rarely die  which is nice as a warlord, and have exacted a heavy toll on the enemy.

Can there ever be such a thing as the norm for Guard? There are many ways to skin a xeno and our codex offers a lot of them ;)

I like to mix things up a little sometimes, but I'm not really sure what could count as unusual. Perhaps I mess around with builds a bit too much? :P I quite like my Ratlings, though usually as a top up to a list and while the Hellhound/variant tanks might not always get the love they deserve they are a relatively frequent addition to my armies. Also mortars. They've not quite been replaced by Wyverns for me, they like to sit on an objective and make a nuisance out of themselves.

Perhaps not so unorthodox sounding but triple weapon veteran squads. Too often, in my opinion, I see that advice that mech vets should only have two of them because of the fire points, which, to be fair, is a reasonable argument. However, whenever I have tried it I find that I lack the necessary firepower at that right moment. Too often it was the last penetrating hit roll or the final saving throw that finishes off the enemy. Without the last gun, my guys are just stranded in no man's land with an angry wold lord or two staring them down (which is bad.)

A basic Tank Commander in an Exterminator is quite a nice HQ. He's cheap and effective, and with different loadouts (lascannon, bolters, multimeltas, etc) can pose a threat to just about any force.

Not a generally useful tactic, but putting an Inquisitor with a Psyocculum in a CCS that contains a Master of Ordnance can be funny against psyker-heavy armies. Bonus points for giving the CCS 3-4 plasma guns. Try and alpha strike me now, Grey Knights.

I like the old 3 Armored Sentinel "Arrowhead Pattern," where you position a 3-vehicle Armored Sentinel squad in such a way that any units firing from the front or sides are shooting at AV12.

I have tried the Exterminator tank commander paired with another Exterminator in a Steel Host and it has never failed me. No many units these days are built around surviving the really good attacks but are fragile to multiple mid-level weapons. Two Exterminators is throwing a lot of dice at your problems. My brother-in-law's thunderwolves do not like them one bit.

Now that I actually have the models to play with what ever I want I have been running ridiculous lists. They usually work out really well but that's mainly because my opponents never know what I am going to bring (they shouldn't be list tailoring anyway).

Some examples are: all tanks, all infantry, heavy abhuman lists, full storm trooper lists, artillery only (mortar vets included)

Its always fun and creates very interesting games. Unit wise I don't mind using pretty much everything mortars are currently a favourite heavy weapon, just because they are fun though.

I would hazard to say that the norm for IG/AM is as many infantry/veteran squads in chimeras as possible (Which is a little boring in my opinion, both hobby and gameplay wise).

My favorite spice to add to an IG army would probably be my personal requirement of at least one knight in each list, with my current one being a Knight Crusader and a Knight Acheron complemented by some carapace vets, artillery and a vendetta. Unfortunately this army isn't done yet, so I'm yet to see if this list is either ( a ) uncommon for a good reason or ( b ) worthy of a nobel peace prize. Either way - should look interesting on the shelf msn-wink.gif

not using wyverns?

Oh, yeah...and this.  Which reminds me, it's time for my cartoonish metal ogryns to hit the tabletop...along with both hellhounds.

Haha that sounds awesome. Bring the fire and brawlers

I love mortars and the Hellhound/variants. Yeah, I have some Wyverns too, but usually only bust them out in larger points games. I may pick up some spare SM bikes from a buddy of mine and proxy build some rough riders- maybe greenstuff some chaps on the SM legs to account for them being larger than Guard legs. Plus, chaps (not sure what they're called in English English, so sorry for the confusion to any Europeans out there) are just funny.
