So i always look at the models and i really wamt to get into the game. For a noob wjere do you start do you get the £72 books first or do you just get the crusade army list books.

Welcome to the B+C! thumbsup.gif

I'm not the most experienced member in regard to 30K, but the little I know is - do you want books that contain a lot of inspirational artwork in a hardback tome? If so, the the £72 books are the way to go. Yes, they're steep, but believe me when I say that the cost was worth it. I have the first and fifth books and I don't regret getting them smile.png If you want to get just the rules, then the Crusade army list books are the ones to go for. There isn't a "right" or "wrong" answer here, just what you want from the books ultimately smile.png The first book I got at a reasonable price on ebay, so you might want to take a look there, but to get right into it, the crusade books are probably better, as the hardback books are fairly hefty in weight. Not the easiest thing to transport for games outside your own home or a fair distance away.

Hope to see which army you decide on soon! thumbsup.gif

The three red books are a good place to start. Book one is the basic crusade armies, book two are the legion bits (save for the things released after it, like ultramarines) and book three that was recently released contains the mechanicum lists.

If you want marines, go for the first two. Mechanicum? That's a given now, is it not? ^^

The regular "black" ones are the fluff books, which contains the rules. These are also the only sources for Ultramarines, the second Word Bearers list, the Questoris Knight list, Solar auxilia and Imperial Militia lists. If you want the quite awesome fluff, go for these. If you want to just get an army on the table, get the red ones (caveat on the previously mentioned lists).

Short summary:
Conquest: Solar Auxilia, Questoris Knigts
Tempest: Ultramarines, Word Bearers (updated), Imperial Militia / Cults.

I might have missed something but...I am sure others will come along and correct me in all due haste!

Welcome to the Heresy!

Get the Crusade Army list, and whichever book has the Legion you're interested in doing.

The Istavaan red book has all Legion rules aside from Ultras and the most up-to-date Word Bearers - You'll find those in Tempest.

What force are you thinking of starting?

Im not sure which one yet. I fell in love with the jet bikes and the super legit looking heavy weapons squads and the boarding shield carrying models. I heard something about the most updated age of darkness rules are in book 4 unless that's wrong. Is there any book that has the specifics to 30k i feel like the game is just 40k with different rules and a percentage limit on your lord of war and you get cool benefits if you take legions

Book 5 (Tempest) has the most recent AoD rules. It does use the bulk of the 40k rules, but is more like older 40k (pre 6th) with required FoC charts, no formations & limitations on what is a scoring unit. There is also no unbound. It's basically a more regimented version of the 40k ruleset.

If you love Breaching Squads & Heavy Support squads though, perhaps Imperial Fists or Iron Warriors?

I cant paint for :cuss and yellow is a very demoralizing color for me it never seems to work for me so id rather avoid that. And i havent seen much on the ways of iron warriors ove only read about how they fell after istvaan V and how the primarch became a deamon
Im a fan of the whole series im actually super excited to get some medusas and basilisks on the table. I guess im confused about how dedicated transports work do you still get to pick up a rhino on a tac squad or do you need to do something to unlock those.

I would recommend getting Battlescribe and playing with lists for a bit, so that you have a general idea where you would like to go. FW stuff is not cheap and avoiding unnecessary purchases can save you some cash msn-wink.gif

This is sound advice. Your going to want to probably do some research before you buy ANYTHING including the books , yer gonna wanna know what legion you wanna play and what sort of army yer gonna wanna build before you start shelling out money for things. Resin is very damaging to the wallet moreso than plastic in my experience so you are going to want to build lists and buy into those lists.

Firstly welcome, secondly I'd recommend getting a very solid idea of exactly what army you want.

Buying via rule of cool can get hideously expensive and result in a bunch of models that don't really work in a list. *Gazes longingly at his shelf of Salamanders*

If you like breachers, arty and siege warfare then the IW or IF are your best bet. IW are super simple to paint, spray with a metallic paint. Wash wash wash, paint some chevrons. Done :)

HOWEVER, Legions aren't the specialised Chapters of the 41st Millenium. Legions were fully equipped to deal with the entire galaxy, though they were certainly suited to certain approaches more than another Legion may have been. This is relayed in the Rites of War, which are sort of special rules that tailor your list to a certain playstyle by granting bonuses (or limitations) on certain units.

So if you like White Scars, you needn't play heavy on bikes and anti-grav. You can get your breachers, medusas, basilisks and quad guns in a standard list, then if you want to - choose a RoW that suits that play style.

Currently the Legion specific RoWs are very much tailored to the 'flavour' of that Legion though. We're getting 30 more soon though so yay :)

Yeah, before you invest even a penny into the Heresy you should really settle on a Legion and play style you'd like.

If you like Breachers the Iron Hands and Imperial Fists do them well.

The Ultramarines have cc equivalent called Invictarus Suzerains which are very impressive also...

If you're set on White Scars, they should be getting some rules around February of next year :-)

Yea i know resin does get spendy fast i am getting to be a pro at conversion rates just by doing the math in my head. Luckily for me my aunt lives in the uk so if i got enough together i could seriously save alot by not paying the 15% shipping rate and tax in Washington. If there were people here that played 30k i would just try and get in an intro game but sadly there isnt atm. And ive read through just about every tactica on here and ive watched every bat rep i can find and read 4chan every chance i get so yea

It is funny how I can help others but never help myself.
