DistroyA
Hi peeps. This is my first topic, although not my first post on here. I haven't commented for a while, but I have been lurking every week in-between various things, including painting my Blood Angels. :) Anyway, onto why I've started a new topic; So, in the last month or so, I've been really wanting to make 3d Space Hulk tiles. Since I've acquired the materials to make moulds and resin, I've decided to practice doing so, and decided to make copies of the noise marine parts I've had for so long so I can improve the firepower of the noise marine army I intend to build. The issue I'm confused about is how to go about the mould making process. I've seen a tutorial on YouTube in regards to making two part moulds, and the guy said there are two ways of creating channels for the resin to fill the mould from; an over gate and an under gate. Now I want to try as best as possible to avoid creating bubbles in the parts, and was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on what is best to use. I'm hoping a few of you have had experience in this field. Thanks in advance anyway. :) DistroyA Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315209-resin-casting-questions/ Share on other sites
Disruptor_fe404
Compressor and pressure chamber will force bubbles to the surface. Alternatively, you could try your luck with some kind platform or bracket that will shake the air bubbles out as much as possible. Subtle Discord
I'm gonna get swamped with classes very soon, but please lurk my Legion Rising thread for info on casting. I use Pressure and Vacuum, but don't let that detract from the information about moulds. Look way back at the beginning and you'll find my first efforts in mould making, and they are by no means elaborate. Ask for clarification here or there if you need, but I can't promise just how quickly I can reply, but I will try to. I recommend taking the time to do a bottom fill (under gate) mould if you're willing. It's not much extra effort really; you'll have the pour channel run down beside the object, hook under it, and back up to fill the object from the bottom. Air escapes though smaller vent/s out the top of the object. Done this way (opposed to a top fill over gate) you're much less likely to trap bubbles as you fill the mould. Take care, Resin Addiction is real. Hi, my name is Subtle, and I've been doing resin for about 4 years. Must... keep... casting... *twitch-twitch* I think I've got control of it, but it's definitely a permanent part of my life now. *twitch* Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315209-resin-casting-questions/#findComment-4204516 Share on other sites
DistroyA
Thank you for the advice guys. I had a feeling the under gate would be the best option. I've laid out all the bits and the channels, so all that needs doing now is to start making the moulds. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315209-resin-casting-questions/#findComment-4205034 Share on other sites
boomboom
Yep, you really want under fill molds for most things. For space hulk tiles, you can simplify it right down using a 1 part mold, have a look at Hirst Arts molds to see how they do it.
