ElectricPaladin
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on getting Grey Knights to look good. I tried the shortcut of metallic spray paint - it's what I thought the painted models I got as a gift from an anonymous BoLSer when my army was stolen seemed to have been painted that way - but it really didn't work. The silver spray seems to reject paint, making what I thought would be Step Two, the black wash, somewhat impractical. So here I am. How do you achieve the Grey Knight "look?" What's your recipe? Larkyn
Are you using the Army Painter Plate Mail Metal by chance? I've had a few batches of those now that have had the same issue you describe. But then another can works perfectly. As much as I love the Army Painter sprays for their color choices, some cans are just bad. ElectricPaladin
No, I tried Krylon's metallic silver spray. I've heard that Krylon spray paints make good primers, but apparently that's not true of their silver metallic. Chronotonic
No it is set up for a final coat and keeps other stuff off your materials Sorry Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315211-raw-ceremite/#findComment-4204510 Share on other sites
Captain Coolpants
A lot of metallic sprays, seem to have too smooth a finish I've found. Which is obviously a problem, because when you put any other coat on top, it can't get a good purchase on the surface. So unless you can find a super matt coloured silver, then dry brush with a nice shiny one, I'd just stick with painting then the old fashioned way. raverrn
Army Painter makes a metallic silver primer. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315211-raw-ceremite/#findComment-4204814 Share on other sites
Psilence
I had similar issues painting my Knights. In the end I used the metallic silver primer, followed by a light misting of matt clear coat (to give the paints and washes something to stick to). The results were very satisfactory :) Good luck. Bartali
I use an airbrush (don't get put off by the cost, you can pick up Chinese compressor/airbrush kits for roughly the price of a Stormraven) Vallejo Black Primer-> Tamiya X-10 Gun Metal->Tamiya X-11 Chrome Silver (highlight)->Vallejo Black Wash (lowlight)->Tamiya X-10 Gun Metal (Smooth transitions between highlights/lowlights) Use a brush to paint the details after, and had no problems with paint sticking Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315211-raw-ceremite/#findComment-4213646 Share on other sites
Trevak Dal
No, I tried Krylon's metallic silver spray. I've heard that Krylon spray paints make good primers, but apparently that's not true of their silver metallic. Metallics and glosses are difficult to work with when it comes to primers, because of their "shineyness" it prevents any paint from being able to adhere. Army Painter is pretty awesome with their spray primers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315211-raw-ceremite/#findComment-4214063 Share on other sites
Father Mehman
I've got two cans of Army Painter Plate Mail (or whatever it's called) and haven't used them yet. I've been wary of them and they just sit there in my primer basket with a smug look on their faces. It's all a bit intimidating, honestly. Anyway, like with the GW Boltgun Spray, I don't think I'd get good coverage with the Plate Mail without having a black primer already applied. Maybe I'm wrong and I've been sitting on a gold mine for my Grey Knights all the while. Well, no matter. I'll try out the Army Painter on a vehicle when I get around to it. Bartali
Continuing on from my other post, if anyone is airbrush curious, this is the set I was talking about :- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Airbrush-Kit-Set-Compressor-Tank-Air-Brushes-Hose-Nail-Art-Tatoo-Paint-Stencil-/121119576120?var=&hash=item1c334a1038:m:m42fM-ePMOIy4r0ddyG6C6Q Had this for about three years now and still running fine. Bought a nicer Harder & Steenbeck airbrush for detail work to complement the chinese airbrush in this kit Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315211-raw-ceremite/#findComment-4214330 Share on other sites
JSilverio
I use an airbrush (don't get put off by the cost, you can pick up Chinese compressor/airbrush kits for roughly the price of a Stormraven) Vallejo Black Primer-> Tamiya X-10 Gun Metal->Tamiya X-11 Chrome Silver (highlight)->Vallejo Black Wash (lowlight)->Tamiya X-10 Gun Metal (Smooth transitions between highlights/lowlights) Use a brush to paint the details after, and had no problems with paint sticking Similar method. Primer > Metal > Highlights > Washes (3-6 thin washes, multiple colours) > Blacklining (If necessary) > Final highlights In order to get metallic models looking nice thin layers of multiple washes is key. Washes washes washes. Thats the time consuming part but it takes your metallic models to the next level if done right. Jegind
Im using Army Painters Platemail metal, and I find the results fine. Im not the best painter at all, but I find my models to be at a good enough table standard......and im trying to improve :D My method is to spray it platemail metal. Then I wash em in Nuln Oil, then I do a semi heavy dry brush with Ironbreaker, then I do a semi dry brush with Necron compound. On my Dreadknights I used the method I just described, but did washed the mechanic parts on it like 2 or 3 times more. This is how my Dreadknights looks like. As I said, im not the best painter, but im kinda proud of it anyway. Im still missing the eyes....cause I cant find an easy way to paint the glowing eyes, and its the same with the sword.....cant find an easy way to paint powerweapons :( http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e27/Jegind/001_zpssd6rrkx7.jpg -Michael Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/315211-raw-ceremite/#findComment-4219067 Share on other sites

Olis
If I may be so bold, try looking up nurgling6688's recipe for his Astral Claws. I'd say he's got a pretty neat thing going on.
