airbrushing and washing question

Recommended Posts

I'm new to airbrushing and have been practicing on a couple of sacrificial marines. I have have been experimenting with zenithal highlighting and washes and have some questions about a couple issues that I have had.

I have been painting black armour and have been highlighting with shades of grey and then washing them with dark wash.

1. How do you avoid/ fix spotting when applying the highlights?

2. How do you avoid/ fix / clean up uneven drying marks from the wash on the neatly applied airbrushed highlights?

There's no shortcut really. Thin your paint.

If you want a smooth transition with no spotting, you'll need to build it up in many layers of thin paint.

If you want to minimise tide marks from a wash, you'll need to make sure only a very thin layer has to dry at once, and build the effect up with multiple applications instead of one thick one.

You might find oil washes work better for you than Citadel Shade type products. Oils don't really create noticeable tide marks, and their long working time makes it easy to adjust them, clean them off raised areas, drag the paint around to smooth the transition, etc.
