Speedpainting Alpha Legion?

So I've seen a bunch of wonderful Alpha Legion schemes here on the forum. However, almost all of them seem to require an airbrush or experience with metallic paints, neither of which I have. In addition, as a college student, I don't really have the cash or the time to go pick up an airbrush and learn how to use it. In fact, the "Betrayal At Calth" box is probably going to be my big purchase this year. Back to the topic at hand, does anyone know any simple, speedy schemes to produce tabletop-quality Alpha Legion in the pre-Heresy style?

Thanks guys.

If you're after the metallic blue-green I'm afraid they're all relatively time consuming. I think. The fastest brush on method that I know of is basecoat a metallic silver of your choice and then use multiple coats of green and blue glazes to get the effect.

Yeah - you basically have just two choices afaik:

Brushwork:

Metallic basecoat, lighter metallic highlites, several thinned down coats of blue/green glazes

Airbrush:

The same, but using your airbrush

tbh, if you want to paint a lot of AL in a short time, try to get a cheap Airbrush - you basically just use it for basecoats, no need for a pricey one for that :)

Hi Mate

Well there are a few options available that don't use an airbrush. I experimented With these before I got an airbrush.

This doesn't mean they were bad, It's Just that I had an opportunity to get one for free.

So, option 1

Base in Stegadon Scale Green and then wash with Coelia Nightshade. Highlight with a lighter greenish blue (can't Remember the name right now) and finally pick details out with leadbelcher .

This results in a darkish matte look. I'll try to get some pics up.

I' ll post option 2 as soon as I get back to my notes

Yeah, I'd agree with SkimaskMohawk. I recommend Army Painter's Gun Metal spray. I use it for my metallic Emperor's Children, then give them three to four washes with purple, and it looks pretty decent for not much effort. The longest part is waiting for the washes to properly dry, but doing batches at a time helps with that.

For AL, I'd suggest silver basecoat then a combination of purple, blue and/or green washes to taste.

Hope this helps.

Check out Zenithal Priming. It's fast, cheap, and you can do it without an airbrush. There should be some guides about it online, if not, feel free to read mine if you're interested:

All it takes are three coats from a rattle can: white, grey, and black. Then thin whatever color you decide your base should be and glaze it on. Follow up with a wash and then paint in any other parts. If you want fast line highlights after that just drybrush a thin coat of silver over the edges for a worn metal look like this:

Good luck!

Honestly, with the methods presented, I'm torn between three:

Brother Dallo's gun-metal spray method.

Bulbafist's zenithal priming method (which I'd never even heard of before today).

Just going at them all with a can of Army Painter Crystal Blue and then painting in straps/shoulder trim, etc. This was my original thought, honestly, but now I'm not sure if the blue looks "Alpha Legion" enough, especially since I'll probably put a wash on it.

You could combine the two, actually. Zenthial prime, base using a metal color, and then use washes to filter the base color to your needs. You could use silver as the base or even something like vallejo Gunmetal Blue. Follow up with targeted washes of purple and blue. I think it would be really fun to paint this way :)

I found a technique that I think might work: basecoat with Plate Mail Metal. Fill in all non-trim and non-strap details (arms, legs, head, etc) with Vallejo Gunmetal Blue, followed by a wash of Drakenhof Nightshade and an as-yet-unknown purple wash. Thoughts on the purple wash?
